Canora Courier, March 06, 2002 OSTAPUK: Funeral service for John Ostapuk, 89, of Canora, who died Feb. 26 at Canora Hospital, was held Mar. 2 at Leson's Funeral Home with Pastor Greg Bright officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born in a small village in Poland in Sept. 27, 1912, to Adam and Elizabeth Ostapuk, he came to Canada with his parents and younger brother, Edward, in 1930. They homesteaded north of Stenen. In 1939, he married Jennie Twardowski in Hyas and they farmed in the Hyas area until retiring to Canora in 1980. Predeceased by his parents, Adam and Elizabeth, three daughters, Darlene, Mary and Evangeline, and a brother Edward, he is survived by his wife, Jennie; a son, Don of Hyas, and three grandchildren. Funeral service for Matt Philipiew, 92, of Canora, who died Feb. 26 at
his residence, was held Mar. 1 at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in
Buchanan with Rev. Joakim Rae officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery
with Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
on Oct. 24, 1909, in the Rama district to George and Dolly (Leniuk) Philipiew,
he attended Bellenden School. His early employment was for neighbours and on
the family farm. On Oct. 8, 1938, he married Mabel Leniuk and in 1939, they
moved to Ontario where he was employed on a tobacco farm near Port Dover. In
1942, they moved to Welland, Ont., where he was employed at Atlas Steel. In
1947, they moved back to Saskatchewan, where they settled on a farm southeast
of Buchanan. In 1975, Matt and Mabel retired to Buchanan. In 2001, he moved to
the Gateway Lodge. Predeceased
by his parents, George and Dolly, three brothers, Nick, Bill and John, and
three sisters, Eunice Romaniuk, Mabel Kupchinski and Annie Dororshenko, he is
survived by his wife, Mabel; two sons, Ernie (Rose) of Oshawa, Ont., and Dave
(Janet) of Calgary, two sisters, Mary Kupchinski of Buchanan and Katie Jijian
of Winnipeg four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Canora
Courier, March 06, 2002 LARSON:
Funeral service for Alma Christine Larson, 93, of Sturgis who died Feb.
22 at the Invermay Health Centre, was held Mar. 2 at the Grace United Church
in Sturgis with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. Preeceville Funeral Home was
in care of arrangements. Born
on Aug 2, 1908, on the family homestead in the Sturgis district, she attended
Mannanah School, high school in Sturgis and Regina Normal School. She taught
for a while in Kuroki, but returned home to help with her ill mother for nine
years. She married Sid Larson in September of 1939. They moved to Flin Flon in
the fall of 1939. When they returned, she taught at Mannanah School, but they
returned to Flin Flon. She taught at Cranberry Portage. In 1961, they moved to
Sturgis and she taught in Ketchen, Hazel Dell and Preeceville for 10 years
before retiring. Predeceased
by her parents, her husband Sidney in 1983, a son, Kenneth in 1993, four
brothers, Andrew, Arvid, Oscar and Eric, and two sisters, Anna Rogstad and
Hilda (Peterson) Been, she is survived by a sister, Freda Melsness of Langley,
B.C., and two grandsons. Canora Courier, March 06, 2002 CARLSON:
Funeral service for Belle Roseine Carlson, 73, of Sturgis, who died
Feb. 19 at Kamsack Hospital, was held Feb. 22, from Grace United Church in
Sturgis with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. Burial was in Sturgis Community
Cemetery with Preeceville Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
on Apr. 10, 1928 to Homer and Ada Thomson of Ypres, Sask, she attended school
in the Ypres district. On Feb. 11, 1945, she married Archibald Wallace Carlson
in Crooked River, Sask. Bella and Archie lived with Archie's parents for the
first few years of their married life, then moved to Norquay. Later they both
worked at the turkey farm in Preeceville and lived in the teacherage at
Corofin until it was destroyed by fire in 1958, when Belle and Archie bought
their first home in Hassen. They spent a couple of years cooking for the CN/CP,
travelling through B.C. by rail from Kamloops to Vancouver. In the early
1970s, they moved to Swift Current. Belle cooked at Carol's Lunch and Pioneer
Co-op cafeteria and then worked as a nurse's aid at the Palliser Hospital.
When Archie retired, they returned to Sturgis. Predeceased
by her father, Homer in 1993, mother, Ada, in 1992, brother, Russell, in 1947,
and son, Glen, in 1947, she is survived by her husband of 57 years, Archie;
sons Gary (Jeanette) of Victoria, John (Leona) Of Swift Current, Ted (Daphne)
of Brandon, and Ron (Arm) of Crofton, B.C.; sister Ruby (Frank) of Sturgis;
brothers Ken of Regina, Raymond of Pontiff, and Robert (Brenda) of Prince
George; and eight grandchildren. Canora
Courier, March 06, 2002 AIRE:
Funeral service for Jesse Gordon Aire, 69, of Denare Beach, and formerly of
Stenen, who died Feb. 20 in Flin Flon, Man., was held Feb. 25 at Flin Flon
Salvation Army Citadel, with Captains John and Shellie Kirchman officiating. Born
Dec. 4, 1932, north of Stenen, he was educated at Goodhue School. In his early
years, he farmed with his father and also operated a feedlot in Carlyle. He
married Lois Washburn in Stenen on May 5, 1961. In 1968, he began work with
Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting in Flin Flon, first in the casting plant and
then in the surface and transportation department. He retired in 1996. Predeceased
by his mother and father, sister Edith and brothers Norman and David, he is
survived by his wife, Lois and sons Dwight of Preeceville and Stirling of
Denare Beach. |
