Canora woman, 52, dies in MVA

Marie Kobylka, 52, of Canora died as result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident south of Canora on Dec. 29.

At about 8:20 p.m. on Dec. 29, Kobylka's vehicle was travelling north on Highway No. 9, about 10 kilometres south of Canora, when the vehicle stalled and travelled on to the southbound lane. Another northbound vehicle stopped to provide assistance, but before any assistance was given, a south­bound vehicle struck Kobylka's vehicle. She was outside the vehicle at the time of the collision.

Four persons were injured in the accident, but Kobylka was the only one airlifted to Regina, where she later died. The others were treated and released from Canora Hospital.

A service of remembrance was held for Kobylka on Jan. 5 at Tuba's Funeral Chapel.

Born on Dec. 13, 1949, at Yorkton Union Hospital to William and Pauline (Kosteniuk) Kobylka, she attended school in Canora. She helped her father do masonry work in the Canora area until she moved to Saskatoon to work for a number of years. After returning to the Canora area, she lived on the farm with Leon Yaworksi.

Predeceased by her father, William, she is survived by her common-law husband Leon Yaworski; a daughter, Theresa Daniels of Toronto; a son, Corey of Canora; her mother, Pauline of Brandon; three brothers, James of Calgary, Michael of Lethbridge and Kenneth of Brandon; two sisters, Donna Kyne of Brandon and Anita Wallace of Calgary, and three grand­children

YACYSHYN:  Funeral service for Nellie Yacyshyn, 94, of Preeceville, who died December 26 at Preeceville Lions Hostel, was held December 29 at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church in Preeceville with Rev. Joakim Rac officiating. Burial was in Preeceville Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery with Preeceville Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born August 1, 1907, in the Preeceville district, she attended Monastyr School and married Steve Yacyshyn at Olesha Ukrainian Catholic Church in 1934. They worked and farmed south of Preeceville for 40 years before moving to Preeceville. She was a life-long member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Predeceased by her husband, Steve in 1998, her parents, Harry and Annie Glowatsky, a daughter, Hazel, one brother and five sisters, she is survived by a son, Victor (Evelyn) of Preeceville; two daughters, Gena (Mike) Kosheluk of Preeceville and Bernice (Mike) Antoniuk of Taber, Alta; a sister, Lena (Pete) Hycha of British Columbia; seven grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

DUBASOV:  Funeral service for Bill Dubasov, 68, of Kamsack, who died December 17 in the Kamsack Hospital, was held December 20 in the chapel of Andrychuk Funeral Home with Rev. Frances Patterson officiating. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery in Kamsack with E. Andrychuk Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born November 1, 1933 in Kamsack to William W. and Mary Dubasov, he attended Poplar Point and Aisle rural schools and the Kamsack Collegiate Institute. On October 22, 1955, he married Anne Shotenski in the United Church in Kamsack.

Predeceased by his father, he is survived by his wife; his mother; eight sons, Don of Edmonton, David (Ruby) of Veregin, James (Corina) of Tisdale and Billy (Carol) of Lethbridge, Alta; Dennis (Jackie) of Yorkton, Les of Edmonton, Robert (Heather) of Victoria and Barry (Melissa) of Weyburn; one daughter, Dianne (Tim) Pister of Kamsack; one brother, Fred Dubasov of Canora; two sisters, Judy Dubasov of Kamsack and Linda (Jim Feeny) Dubasov of Winnipeg, and 15 grandchildren.

MALINOWSKI:  Funeral service for Maggie Malinowski, 83, of Theodore and formerly of the Whitesand district, who died December 16, was held December 19 from St. Theodore Roman Catholic Church in Theodore with Rev. Basil Chomos officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery with Bailey's Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born in the Whitesand district to Mike and Mary Pawliw, she married Carl Malinowski on July 17, 1943. The couple farmed in the Theodore district before moving into town in 1967.

Predeceased by her parents, a son, Emil, and three sisters, Sophie Pawliw, Catherine Bednas and Anne Hnidey, she is survived by her husband; two daughters, Gail (Gordon) Blommaert of Regina and Joanne (Gregg) Penteluk of Grande Prairie, Alta; five sisters, Lena Biblow, Nettie (John) Kerelchuk, Olga (Victor) Karasuik, Delores Pawliw and Adeline Lahoda; one brother, Bill (Olga) Pawliw, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

MOSIUK: Funeral service for Mary Mosiuk, 80, of Kamsack, who died December 29, was held December 31 from St. Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic church in Kamsack with Rev. Ivan Nahachewsky officiating. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery with E. Andrychuk Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born August 24, 1921 in St. Philips to John and Frances Dereworiz, she attended Stratford School and farmed with her husband until 1995. She operated the Kamsack Paint and Carpet Centre in Kamsack with her husband from 1964 to 1993. She was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic church at St. Philips and Kamsack. On November 15, 1945, she married Peter Mosiuk in the Arran Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Predeceased by her parents, brother, Steve; a sister, Anne Kindiak, and her husband, she is survived by one son, Larry of Kamsack; a daughter, Shirley (Martin) Makowsky of Canora, and two grandchildren.

RATUSHNY:  Funeral service for Paul Ratushny, 72, of Kamsack, who died December 22 in Regina General Hospital, was held December 29 in St. Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Church with Rev. Ivan Nahachewsky officiating. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery with E. Andrychuk Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born September 6, 1929 in Kamsack to Dmetro and Tillie Ratushny, he was educated in Kamsack and took post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan. He worked as the administrator for the Kamsack Union Hospital for 42 years. He was a member of the Legion, the Knights of Columbus, Elks Club and was a past president of St. Stephen's Church. On January 31, 1960, he married Margaret Olive Tulloch.

Predeceased by his parents, he is survived by his wife; one son, Scott (Teryle) of Calgary; one daughter, Paula (Chris) Mayor of Regina; one brother, Ed (Lynne) of Ottawa, and two grandchildren.

BEREZUIK:  Funeral service for Mike Berezuik, 81, of Lintlaw, who died December 13 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, was held December 18 at Lintlaw Community Centre with Rev. Raymond Knight officiating. Burial was in Lintlaw Community Cemetery with Blair's Kelvington Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born January 24, 1920, he immigrated from Poland to Canada in 1929 with his parents, John and Mary Berezuik. He married Pearl Yaychuk on October 19, 1941, at May School and lived in the Lintlaw district for 72 years. He farmed for most of his life and ran an International Harvester dealership during the 1940s and 1950s. He purchased the Lintlaw Hotel in the 1960s and in 1970, moved back to the farm.

Predeceased by his parents, his wife Pearl, and a brother, Nick, he is survived by two sons, Don (Jennifer) Berezuk of LaRonge, Sask., and Dennis (Bonnie) Berezuik of Wadena; four daughters, Eugenia (Greg) Kennedy of Preeceville, Nettie (Joe) Dearborn of Leaf Rapids, Man., Anne (Duane) Wagner of Vonda and Debbie (Ken) Mihalicz of Lintlaw; 19 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

KOWTZEN:  Funeral service for Mary Kowtzen, 92, of Canora, who died Jan. 1 at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon, was held Jan. 5 at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canora with Rev. Joakim Rac officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Sept. 22, 1909, in the Amsterdam district to Peter and Rose (Blaz) Dutchak, she attended Antonio School. She helped her parents on the family farm and on Feb. 2, 1928, married William Kowtzen. They farmed north of Tadmore. A short while later, they moved to another farm, 12 miles north of Canora, where they farmed until retiring in 1973. They retired to Canora and William died in 1977. Predeceased by her parents, Rose and Peter, her husband William, and four brothers, Mike, Sam, Bill and Frank, she is survived by two sans, Albert of Canora and Eugene (Elizabeth) of Swan River; a daughter, Helen (Norman) Kutney of Saskatoon; three sisters, Josephine Baron of Canora, Olga Rock of Canora and Leona Phillips of Brandon; six grandchildren, six great­grandchildren and one great­great-grandchild.

FERGUSON:  Funeral service for Louise Ferguson, 88, of Yorkton and formerly of the Okla and Invermay districts, who died December 21, was held December 28 from St. Paul's United Church in Theodore with Rev. Mary Jane Allan officiating. Burial was in the Theodore Cemetery with Bailey's Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born May 27, 1913 at Bredenbury to Eldon and Anna (nee Pihlaja) Haning, she attended Silver Springs School near Okla and the Soch Stay School near Invermay. She worked on a farm south of Theodore until November 9, 1934 when she married Harold J. Ferguson in Invermay. The couple moved east of Creekside School. Before retiring to Theodore in 1973, she received an award from the Co-op hatchery in Yorkton for the high quality of eggs she supplied.

Predeceased by her husband in 1984, her parents, a sister, Elsie Wyman and a brother, Frank Haning, she is survived by one son, Lyle (Elaine) of Theodore; a sister, Lillian parr of Rose Valley; two brothers, Wilbert (Joyce) Haning of Rose Valley and George (Madeline) Haning of Buchanan, and four grandchildren.

HRYNCHYSHYN:  Funeral service for Ben Hrynchyshyn, 83, of Preeceville and formerly of Buchanan, who died December 25 at Preeceville and District Nursing Home, was held December 29 at Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Ghost in Buchanan with Rev. Joakim Rae officiating. Burial was in the Ukrainian Catholic section of the Buchanan Cemetery with Tuba's Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.

Born April 10, 1918, on the family farm, he attended Dyland School and vocational school in Saskatoon and Regina to upgrade his carpentry skills. He began farming on his own in 1939 and served in the labour force during the Second World War as a carpenter and machine operator. He married Mary Loshka in 1951 and they resided on his farm north of Buchanan. In 1956, they moved to Buchanan and he served as mayor, councillor and barber. He was an active member of the Church of the Holy Ghost.

Predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Hrynchyshyn, his wife, Mary, two brothers, Archie and Walter, and three sisters, Myroslava Wasylkiw, Polly Repatowski and Dora in infancy, and a granddaughter, he is survived by four sons, Allan (Susan) Hyson of Leduc, Alta, Pat (Terri) Hrynchyshyn of Millet, Alta, Lyle Hrynchyshyn of Wetaskiwin, Alta., and Nick (Louise) Hrynchyshyn of Wetaskiwin; three daughters, Laura Phillips of Camrose, Alta, Gail (Kevin) Stone of Leduc and Karen (Andy) Teslia of Watson; three brothers, Albert of Buchanan, Bill of Rexdale, Ont., and Michael of Paris, France; two sisters, Olga Sundin of Pritchard, B.C., and Ethel Dutchak of Yorkton, and 18 grandchildren.

KOSHLAY:  Funeral service for Sam Koshlay, 78, of Invermay, who died December 11, was held from St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Goodeve on December 14 with Rev. Methodius Kushko officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Born November 30, 1923 in the Goodeve district to Peter and Pauline (nee Semeniuk) Koshlay, he attended Hauledge School and farmed. On November 26, 1946, he married Stephanie Malowney and the couple farmed for three years before moving to Flin Flon, Man., where he worked for the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company. After his retirement in 1981, the couple moved to Sheho, then 10 years later, they moved to Invermay.

Predeceased by his parents, a daughter, Shaunna McKenzie, two sisters, Lena Gehring and Sophie Sweninko, and two brothers, Michael and Nestor, he is survived by his wife; one daughter, Regina of Calgary; two brothers, Mardy of Crawford Bay, B.C., and John (Pauline) of Vancouver; five sisters, Katie Kozak of Hamilton, Ont., Jean Parachoniak of Saskatoon, Lillian (Rudy) Mydelski, Patsy Krushelnitski and Marj (Nestor) Mandziak, all of Regina, and one grandchild.
