Canora Courier, April 17, 2002 CHOPTY:
Funeral service for Josephine Chopty, 81, of Churchbridge and formerly
of the Invermay district, who died Apr. 1 at the Langenburg Special Care Home,
was held Apr. 4 from St. Mary's Roman Catholic church in Churchbridge with
Rev. Rick Krofchek and Rev. Brad Fahlman officiating. Burial was in St.
Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in Invermay with Bailey's
Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
Mar. 21, 1921 in the Invermay district to Mike and Anna (nee Near) Brezinski,
she was raised on the farm and attended school. On Oct. 25, 1937, she married
Walter Chopty at Invermay and they farmed in the Invermay district until
moving into Churchbridge. Predeceased
by her husband, two sons, Russell and borne, and five brothers, John, Edward,
Zigmund, Walter and Peter Brezinski, she is survived by one son, Mike (Alice)
of Churchbridge; two daughters, Vikki Gogal of Creston, B.C. and Margaret
(Earl) Sundahl of Richmond, B.C.; five brothers, Carl (Anne) of Winnipeg,
Marion (Betty) and Stanley (Eileen), both of Yorkton, Tony (Colleen) of Regina
and Louys (Ada) of Invermay; two sisters, Mary Bugiera of Rama and Adelle
(Lorne) Rosko of Winnipeg 15 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Canora Courier, April 17, 2002 KOROL:
Funeral service for Omelian "Buck" Korol, 72, of High River,
Alta., and formerly of Donwell, who died Apr. 10 in Banff, was held Apr. 15 at
Leson's Funeral Home with Rev. Peter Anhel officiating. Burial was in the
Sliding Hills Christian Cemetery (Mazeppa) with Leson's Funeral Home
officiating. Born
in Canora on May 10, 1929, to Mike and Julia (Pakosh) Korol, he attended
Bridok and Donwell schools and the Yorkton Collegiate Institute. He joined the
air force at 19 years of age and took his flight training in Charlottetown,
P.E.I. After getting his wings, he was a flight lieutenant stationed in
Trenton, Ont., and Moose Jaw. After five years, he left the air force to fly
for Spartan Airways, mapping northern Canada. In 1955, he joined Trans Canada
Airline (Air Canada) as a commercial pilot. In 1979, he suffered a mild heart
attack and spent the next two years running marathons to prove himself fit
enough to be reinstated with full captain status. He was the first commercial
airline pilot in Canada to be reinstated with an airline transport rating. In
1979, he married Patrician Fright in Toronto. For the next 22 years, he held
down a full-time job as a L1011 captain and built up a farm in High River. Predeceased by his parents, Mike and Julia, and a sister, Olga Gulak, he is survived by twin daughters, Tauron (Richard) Ferguson and Donna (Mark) Fowler, four brothers, Eugene (Victoria) of Canora, Bohdan (Marlene) of Canora, Orest (Irene) of Yorkton and Maurice (Louise) of Aylmer, Que.; two sisters, Kathy (Moe) Davyduke of Saskatoon and Alice (Harold) Popoff of Yorkton, and five grandchildren. Funeral service for Francis Burkatsky, 88, of Preeceville who died Mar.
22 in Preeceville Nursing Home, was held March 27 in the chapel of Preeceville
Funeral Home with Rev. Ivan Nahachewsky officiating. Burial was in Ukrainian
Catholic Cemetery in Hazel Dell with Preeceville Funeral Home in care of
arrangements. Born
May 6, 1913 in Rama, she was educated at Dobrowaty School. She married nick Burkatsky
in Buchanan in 1935. She did volunteer work in the nursing home in addition
to her duties as a housewife. Predeceased by her husband, Nick, daughter, Olga, two brothers Louis and Eddie Paslowski, two sisters Jean and Annie, she is survived by one son, Lorne of Hazel Dell, one daughter, Mabel Tymrick of Vancouver, two sisters, Emily Bassett and Kay Ozman, both of Belleville, Ont., seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral service for Bill Spilchen, 79, of Yorkton and formerly of the
Whitesand district, who died Mar. 29 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre,
was held Apr. 3 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Faye
Greer of Westview United Church officiating. Burial was in Yorkton Memorial
Gardens with Bailey's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
Feb. 9, 1923, in the Whitesand district to Nick and Magda (nee Spelay)
Spilchen, he attended Whitesand School then worked at a variety of jobs until
purchasing a farm in the Orcadia district. On Jan. 12, 1971, he married
Elizabeth Ellis and the couple lived in Yorkton. Predeceased by his parents, four brothers, Metro, Steve, Peter and Fred, and two sisters, Mary Chornanky and Pauline Kowalyk, he is survived by his wife; one stepdaughter, Elizabeth (John) Kobitz of Saltcoats; one stepson, Albert Ellis of Fisher Branch, Man.; five brothers, Mike (Pauline) of Yorkton, Paul of Orcadia, Henry (Shirley) of Orcadia, George of Springside and John of Vancouver; three sisters, Anne Multon and Katie (Steve) Skwarchuk, both of Moose Jaw and Madeline (Henry) Yaremko of Yorkton; two stepgrandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren. Funeral service for Walter Joseph Nowakowski, 83, of Wadena and
formerly of the Hazel Dell district, who died Mar. 21, was held Mar. 26 from
St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Wadena with Rev. David Polzen officiating.
Burial was in Porcupine Plain-Chelan Hillcrest Cemetery. Born
Sept. 20, 1918 to Lawrence (a.k.a. Walter) and Annie (nee Barteski) Nowakowski,
he was raised on the farm in the Hazel Dell district. On May 4, 1941, he
married Annie Mushanski and the couple farmed in the Porcupine Plain district
until moving to Wadena in 1978. He worked at the Wadena co-op and served as
mayor and alderman of Wadena. Predeceased by a son, Walter, in infancy, his wife in 1995, his father in 1958, mother in 1995, and a brother, Frankie in 1930, he is survived by five children, Lena (Joe) Nowakowski and Rudy (Janet) Novak, both of Edmonton, Bill (Kathy) Nowakowski of Saskatoon, Mary (Kimbel Doyle) Currie of Yellowknife and Nestor (Pat) Nowakowski of Wadena; five sisters, Bernice Gulka, Mary (Mike) Chalupiak and Helen (Steve) Gulka, all of Preeceville, Rose (Dowal) Douglas of Vernon, B.C. and Pauline (Gary) Burnham of Everett, Wash.: nine brothers, Mike (Helen), Paul (Margaret) Joe (Doreen) and Steve (Deanna) of Vernon, B.C., Edward (Barb) of Smithers, B.C., Frank (Marie) of Chase, B.C., Rudy (Judy) of Kamloops, B.C., Eddie (Martha) of Williams Lake, B.C. and Carl (Martha) of Yorkton; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Canora Courier, April 17, 2002 SYROTA: Alex passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, Apr. 9, 2002. Alex was predeceased by his parents Tichon and Matrona Syrota and brothers Bill and Serhe. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Shirley, his wife of 48 years, and their daughters Sonia (Wayne) Webb and Arlene (Don) Hewitt of Regina; grandsons Murray Webb, Evan and Paul Hewitt; his brother Paul of Invermay, as well as numerous relatives in the Ukraine. Alex was born on Sept. 22, 1922 in Navey, Dvir, Rivni, Ukraine. In 1928 his family immigrated to Canada and homesteaded in the Hyas district. Alex received his education at Lake Helen school. He married Shirley Zarazun of Preeceville and they farmed near Hyas, retiring to Canora and later moving to Yorkton and Regina. Alex was a lifelong member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He served on many committees and boards and also sang in the choir. The Ukrainian culture was important to Alex. He leaves family and friends to cherish his memory of a kind, caring man with boundless generosity, love, patience, and gentleness. A prayer service was held at the Pioneer Village Chapel on Friday, Apr. 12 at 8 p.m. A funeral service was held at the Descent of the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox Pro-Cathedral, 1305 - 12th Avenue on Saturday, Apr. 13 at 10 a.m., with Rev. Father Brent Kuzyk officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Memorial Gardens, Regina. Flowers are gratefully declined, however, those wishing may make donations in Alex's memory to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Arrangements were entrusted to Paragon Funeral Services (359-7776). Funeral service for Annie Florence Twerdochlib, 92, of Norquay, who
died Apr. 12 at the Norquay Health Centre, was held Apr. 15 at St. Thomas
Roman Catholic church in Norquay with Rev. Andrew Sowa officiating. Burial was
in the Canora Cemetery with Leson's Funeral home in care of arrangements. Born
on Apr. 18, 1908, in the Hyas district to John and Theresa (Zawislak)
Kindratsky, she attended Moss Lake School. She married Joe Twerdochlib on May
15, 1932, at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church in the Norquay district and they
farmed in the Hyas district until 1975. They continued to live on the farm
until 1993, when they moved to Norquay. She was a member of the St. Anne's
Altar Society. Predeceased by her parents John and Theresa, her husband Joe, a son Leonard in 1969, six brothers, Kasko, Anton, Joe, Tom, Willie and Paul, and two sisters, Bertha in childhood and Mary Cherewyk, she is survived by a son, Ron (Minnie) Twerdochlib of Revelstoke; two daughters, Adeline Pickering of Winnipeg and Veronica of Winnipeg, 10 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral service for Olga Stusick, 81, of the Canora Gateway Lodge, who
died Apr. 12 at Canora Hospital, was held Apr. 15 at Leson's Funeral Home with
Rev. Ken Buchan officiating. Burial was in the Antoniwka Cemetery with Leson's
Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on June 6, 1920, to John and Katherina (Bruchal) Podborski in Rockyford, Alta., she attended Rockyford High School and McGill University. She worked as a registered nurse at Royal Alexander Hospital in Edmonton before moving to Canora to become the matron at Canora Union Hospital. She married Henry Stusick on Jan. 29, 1950, in Canora. She also worked at the Yorkton Union Hospital. In 1967, at the age of 47, she received her driver's licence and went to work for the Department of Indian Affairs as a registered nurse in Kamsack. She was a member of the Eastern Star. Predeceased by her parents, John and Katherina, her husband Henry and a brother Victor, she is survived by a son, Michael of Calgary-, a brother, David (Wendy) of Calgary-, two sisters, Marge (Ron) Poole of Three Hills, Alta., and Helen (Harold) Roppel of Rockyford, and two grandchildren.

Funeral service for Florence
Esther Hilderman, 92, of Yorkton and formerly of the Rhein district, who died
Apr. 3 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, was held Apr. 6 from St Paul
Lutheran Church in Yorkton with Pastor Fred Schneider officiating. Burial was
in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery in Rhein with arrangements by Bailey's Funeral
Home. Born Jan. 9, 1910 in Balgonie, to William Herbert and Alta (nee Burley) Eaman, she moved to Rhein with her family when she was six years of age. By age 12 she was living in Yorkton where she attended Yorkton Collegiate Institute. She entered Teachers' College then taught at a variety of schools, including Rhein. She moved to Yorkton where she served as president of the Red Cross association, the Yorkton, provincial and Canadian music festivals. She and her husband, Manuel Hilderman, had three children, Judy, Marsha and Greg, and three grandchildren. |
