Canora Courier, June 19, 2002

SLIWA:  Funeral service for Anne Sliwa, 81, of Buchanan, and formerly of the Dobrowody district, who died June 13 at Preeceville Hospital, was held June 17 at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Andrew Sowa officiating. Burial was in Canora Cemetery with Preeceville Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.

Born on Apr. 21, 1921, in Dallas, Man., to Harry and Mary Balan, she attended Northland School in Red Rose, Man. After school, she moved to Winnipeg where she worked for a few years. She married Paul Melanin and they moved to Kitimat, B.C. Nine years after they were married, he died. Her second marriage was to Walter Sliwa at SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church in Dobrowody.

Predeceased by her parents Harry an Mary, a brother Mike, a sister Helen, her first husband Paul and her second husband Walter, she is survived by two sisters, Olga and Stella and a brother, Fred.

FOSTEY:  Funeral service for Henry Fostey, 67, of the Canora district, who died June 2 at Canora Hospital, was held June 5 at Leson's Funeral Home with Rev. Peter Wasylenko officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born on Feb. 1, 1935, in Canora to William and Mary (Litowski) Fostey, he attended East Scalet School. He was 14 when his father died and he took over the farming operation. At the age of 17, he started a trucking business which continued until poor health forced him to quit. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Canora for more than 15 years. He was a member of the Canora Orthodox Church.

Predeceased by his parents, William and Mary, and a sister, Victoria, he is survived by his wife, Natalie; a brother, Nick (Lila) of Yorkton, and a sister, Anna Stetski (Carman Byler) of Calgary.

SICKEL:  Funeral service for Raymond Sickel, 73, of Kamsack, who died June 5 in Kamsack Hospital, was held June 8 from the chapel of Andrychuk Funeral Home with Rev. Hector Seville officiating. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery in Kamsack with E. Andrychuk Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born Oct. 22, 1928 in Saskatoon to Frank and Katie Sickel, he was educated at Bear Stream School, then took his grades nine and 10 by correspondence. He began working with CNR in 1948 as a fireman at The Pas, Man., then qualified as a locomotive engineer in 1956. He was based in Canora, working on freight and passenger assignments. He retired in 1986. He was a member of the BPO Elks and was a life member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

Predeceased by his father in 1968, mother in 1964, and a brother Lloyd in 1995, he is survived by two sisters, Rose (Frank) Kachkowski and Sylvia (Lawrence) Luba, both of Winnipeg.

WASYLIW:  Funeral service for Peter Wasyliw, 87, of Canora, who died June 7 at Canora Gateway Lodge, was held June 12 at Leson's Funeral Home with Rev. Peter Wasylenko officiating. Burial was in the St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church Cemetery in Gorlitz with Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born on Aug. 12, 1914, in the Canora district to Harry and Domka (Ambrosichuk) Wasyliw, he attended West Wexford School. On July 31, 1944, he married Nellie Procyshen. He was involved with music most of his life, playing the violin, dulcimer, guitar and accordion and his orchestra was well known through out much of Saskatchewan, having played for many wedding and dances. He farmed until 1982.

Predeceased by his parents, Harry and Domka, a son Edward in infancy, two sisters, Veronica Trump and Olga Marchuk, and two brothers Mike and Jack, he is survived by his wife, Nellie; six sons, George (Barbara) of Regina, Larry (Mitzie) of Calgary, Bob (Mae) of Hong Kong Dan (Debbie) of Canora, Harvey of Yorkton and Ed (Michele) of Leduc; a daughter, Sylvia (Paul) Lazar of Regina; a brother, Paul of Chicago;

RATUSHNIAK:  Funeral service for Joe Ratushniak, 76, of Yorkton and formerly of the Canora district, who died June 4 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, was held June 8 from St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Bryan Bayda officiating. Burial was in Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Bailey's Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born Mar. 28, 1926 in the Canora district to John and Mary Ratushniak, he became a member of the Canadian Infantry Corps in 1945. In 1951, he married Helen Wolkowski in Canora and the couple settled in Yorkton where he worked as a mechanic and then an agent for Shell Canada. He was a member of St. Mary's parish and the Knights of Columbus.

Predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Michael and Sam, and two sisters, Rosie Blahitka and Nellie Bodnarchuk, he is survived by his wife; one son, Blair (Sheila) of Otthon; two daughters, Carol (Mark) Prosser of Cold Lake, Alta., and Sandra (Craig) McKenzie of Regina; two brothers, Tom (Kay) Ray of Burnaby, B.C. and Orest (Pauline) Ratushniak of Winnipeg one sister, Olga Krywetski of Flin Flon, Man., and eight grandchildren.

DORASH, Wilbert:  On Thursday, June 13, 2002, at the age of 68 years, Wilbert Dorash of Surrey, B.C. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. Wilbert was born on Feb. 11, 1934 in Canora, Sask. He attended Canora High School. After a few years in Edmonton, he moved to Prince Rupert where he worked for Columbia Cellulose. Wilbert moved to Vancouver in 1963. He helped pioneer Econotech Services and worked there until retire­ment in 1999. Wilbert was predeceased by his father Wasyl and his brother Thomas, and sister Olga in infancy. Wilbert is survived by his mother Helen, brother Gene, sister Jeannette, sister-in­law Dona, nephew Jim (Yvonne) and great-nephew Jarred, niece Sandra and niece Sonia (Blair) and great-nephew Brady. Wilbert will be remembered as a devoted and loving son, brother and uncle and as a friend who touched many lives with his kind and gentle way. He will be missed by all who knew him. Services will take place in Canora, Sask. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society
