Funeral service for Katie Uhryn, 87, of Yorkton, and formerly of the
Rhein district, who died Mar. 2 in the Yorkton and District Nursing Home, was
held Mar. 5 from St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev.
Dmytro Dnistrian and Rev. Joseph Denischuk officiating. Burial was in Yorkton
City Cemetery with Bailey's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
Apr. 30, 1914 in Yorkton to Mike Dereniwsky and Petronella Yuzyk, she attended
Kitzman School. She married John Uhryn on Oct. 13, 1940 in St. Mary's Church
in Yorkton and the couple farmed in the Rhein district until 1972 when they
retired to Yorkton. She was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic women's League
and the Blue Army. Predeceased by her parents, her husband in 1992, an infant son, Eddie in 1946, two sisters, Ann Dombroski and Mary Manchuk, and three brothers, John, Nick and Paul Dereniwski, she is survived by three daughters, Theresa (Walter) Denischuk of Yorkton, Fran Uhryn of Canora and Pat (Walter) Bellay of Canora; four sons, John of Rhein, Ben (Teresa) of Rhein, Wes (Drama) of Yorkton and Pete (Sue) of Rosetown; one brother, Alex (Emily) Dereniwski of Yorkton; 19 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral service for Fred Spilchen, 78, of Yorkton and formerly of the
Whitesand district, who died Mar. 4 at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home,
was held Mar. 7 from the Family Centre at Yorkton memorial Gardens with Pastor
Peter hay of Yorkton Alliance Church officiating. Burial was in Yorkton
memorial Gardens with Bailey's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
Feb. 29, 1924 to Nick and Magda (nee Spelay) in the Whitesand district, he
attended Whitesand School. In 1941, he moved to Vernon, B.C., where he worked
in a logging camp. After returning to Saskatchewan, he operated a pool hall in
Springside. In 1947, he married Patricia Soboloski and the couple moved to
Vancouver where he worked as a commercial fisherman and in a paint
manufacturing plant. After retiring in 1989, he moved to Yorkton. Predeceased by his parents, his wife in 1955, a son, Gary in 1964, three brothers, Metro, Steve and Peter and two sisters, Mary Chornanky and Pauline Kowalyk, he is survived by one daughter, Karen Spilchen of Nanaimo, B.C.; six brothers, Bill (Betty) and Mike (Pauline) both of Yorkton, Paul and Henry (Shirley), both of Orcadia, George of Springside and John of Vancouver, and three sisters, Anne Multon and Katie (Steve) Skwarchuk, both of Moose Jaw and Madeline (Henry) Yaremko of Yorkton. Funeral service for Mary Tumak, 84, of Buchanan, who died Mar. 10 at
her residence, was held Mar. 14 at St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in
Buchanan with Rev. Peter Wasylenko officiating. Burial was in the Canora
Cemetery with Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
on Feb. 14, 1918, in the Drobot district to Sandy and Odarka (Manick)
Meluychuk, she attended Sandy River School near Theodore, and then, Vasloutz
School. She married John Tumak on Mar. 3, 1935, at the Drobot Church. They
farmed south of Buchanan in the Vasloutz district. She was active in the
Ukrainian Women's Association. In 1986, her husband died and in 1988, she
moved to the Buchanan senior housing units. She was a member of Club 50. Predeceased by her parents Sandy and Odarka, her husband John, a son Edward, two brothers John and Alex and two sisters Katie Rehaluk and Dora Kitzan, she is survived by two sons, Ernie of Canora and Ronald (Trudy) of Winnipeg, a daughter, Verna (Joe) Dziaduck of Buchanan; a brother, Steve (Marilyn) Meluychuk of Chilliwack. B.C.; two sisters, Annie Olsyer of Ottawa and Sadie Trish of Porcupine Plain, eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Canora Courier, March 20, 2002 BARTESKI: Funeral service for Margaret Barteski, 91, of the Canora Gateway Lodge, who died Mar. 13 at the Lodge, was held Mar. 18 at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Canora with Rev. Hector Seville officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
on Dec. 5, 1910, to Joseph and Katherina (Borduik) Strykowski, who immigrated
to Canada just prior to her birth, she was educated at Norway School in the
Stenen district. She worked for a short period in The Pas but returned to the
family farm. She married Mike Barteski on Jan. 22, 1933, and they farmed east
of Preeceville. They moved to Preeceville in 1947. She belonged to the UCWL
for 30 years and to the CWL in Sturgis. Predeceased
by her parents, Joseph and Katherina, four sisters, Eva, Caroline, Ann and
Mary, a brother John, five step-brothers, Harry, John, Bill and Steve Kardynal,
and a step-sister Mary, she is survived by her husband, Mike of Kamsack a son,
Ernie (Myrna) of Calgary; two daughters, Mabel (Mike) Cuinyk of Canora and
Rose (Lorne) Wenarchuk of Swift Current; a step-sister, Della Puchal of
Edmonton; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Canora Courier, March 20, 2002 ELCHUK:
Mineral service for Audrey Gail Elchuk, 49, of Hamton and formerly of
Rhein, who died Mar. 4, was held Mar. 8 from Christie-Hill Funeral Chapel in
Yorkton with Pastor Brent Eisner officiating. Burial was in Yorkton City
Cemetery with Christie-Hill Funeral Chapel and Crematorium in care of
arrangements. Born
Aug. 21, 1952 to Dave and Molly (nee Frick) Boehm, she was raised at Rhein and
attended school in Rhein and Yorkton. She worked at Yorkton Television for 20
years as an artist and set designer. On Dec. 31, 1976, she married Barry
Elchuk. Predeceased by her parents and a brother, Rheinhold, she is survived by her husband; two brothers, Eddie (Lena) and Arnold (Effie) Boehm, all of Rhein, and five sisters, Irene (Albert) Koch of Esterhazy, Florence Matechuk, Viola (John) Stricker, Burble (Jim) McDougal and Shirley (Bob) Gavias, all of Yorkton. A private graveside service for Stanley Koscielski, 76, of Tadmore, who
died Mar. 10 at his residence, will take place at a later date. Cremation has
taken place with Preeceville Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
on July 3, 1925, in Norquay to Mike and Anne Koscielski, he attended school in
Birch River, Man. He worked at various locations as a labourer throughout his
life. He is survived by three sisters: Frances (Wilf) O'Hearne of Toronto, Mary (Frank) Urbanoski of Yorkton and Linda (Nick) Dootoff of Hudson Bay. Canora Courier, March 20, 2002 MARLOW:
Funeral service for Joyce Marlow, 70, of Kamloops, B.C. and formerly of
Invermay, who died Feb. 28, was held at the Oakdale Community Centre Mar. 8
with the Kamloops Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
Joyce Loucks on Nov. 9, 1931 in Invermay, she lived in Valemount and Kamloops. Predeceased by her husband, Ken in 2000, she is survived by six children, Brian, Patricia, Brad, Bob, Allison and Adrienne; one brother, Art Loucks; a sister, Cheryl, and 12 grandchildren. Funeral service for Stanley Pawlik, 91, of Canora, who died Mar. 13 at
Canora Hospital, was held Mar. 15 at Tuba's Funeral Chapel with Rev. Peter
Anhel officiating. Burial was in the Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery of the Holy
Transfiguration with Tuba's Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements. Born on July 14, 1910, in Krakow, Poland, he immigrated to Canada in 1926 at the age of 16. Leaving his family behind, he got a job on a cargo ship to make the trip. He settled in the Donwell area and worked to save enough money to buy his own land. He married Sadie Kozuska in 1948. They farmed until retiring to Canora in 1995. In addition to his regular farming chores, he enjoyed working with bees and processing honey. Predeceased by his parents, Vincent and Elisabeth (Nogany) Pawlik, a daughter Patricia in infancy, two brothers Joseph and Laddie and two sisters, Bernice and Julia, he is survived by his wife, Sadie; a son Vincent (Darlene) of Yorkton; two daughters, Elizabeth (Glen) Derkatch and Lucille (Bon) Strocen, and five grandchildren. |
