Canora Courier, May 22, 2002 LOCKEN:
Funeral service for Anna Helene Locken, 88, of Sturgis, who died May 12
at Kamsack Hospital, was held May 15 at Grace United Church in Sturgis with
Rev. Miles Russell officiating. Burial was in the Yorkton Memorial Gardens
with Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
on Apr. 18, 1914, to Amund and Helene (Matheson) Hanson, she attended Hyas
School. On Nov. 21, 1935, she married Norman Locken and they farmed in the
Hyas district until 1966, when they moved to Hyas. After her husband's death,
she continued to live in Hyas until 1989, when she moved to Sturgis. Predeceased by her husband, Norman, her parents Amund and Helene, and a brother, a she is survived by three daughters, Sylvia (Peter) Negraeff of Polly, Myrna (Don) Torrie of Regina and Noreen (Brian) Carlson of Canora; 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral service for Walter Korchynos, 66, of Pelly, who died May 14 at
his home, was held May 20 at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Norquay
with Rev. Joakim Rac officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with
Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Dec. 12, 1935, in the
Buchanan district to Wasyl and Helen (Serhan) Korchynos, he attended schools
in Buchanan and Preeceville. He worked at various jobs from British Columbia
to Ontario. In 1958 he entered Teacher's College in Saskatoon. He married
Shirley Anaka in Stenen on Aug. 14, 1959, and, three days later, began
teaching at Luzan country school, southeast of Veregin. In 1962, he moved to
Brandon School, south of Kamsack, and in 1969, they moved to Pelly where he
taught for the rest of his career. In 1976, he received his bachelor of
education degree, after many years of summer school. He retired from teaching
in 1991, but kept himself busy farming on a part-time basis in the Pelly and
Preeceville areas. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as a
justice of the peace for many years. Predeceased by his father, Wasyl, and two
brothers, Nestor in infancy and Peter, he is survived by his wife, Shirley;
his mother, Helen of Preeceville; three daughters, Debora (Christoph)
Scharnagl of Austria, Suzette (Brett) Thurston of Calgary and Beverly
Korchynos of Calgary, and six grandchildren. Canora Courier, May 22, 2002 BACKER:
Funeral service for Kathleen Lucille Backer, 71, of Fort Saskatchewan,
Alta., and formerly of the Canora area, who died May 14, was held May 17 at
Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Fort Saskatchewan with Rev. Duncan
MacDonnell officiating. Burial was in the Fort Saskatchewan Cemetery with
Riverview Funeral Services in care of arrangements. Predeceased by her parents, Rose and Albin Pollack, and two brothers, Raymond and Robert, she is survived by her husband Art; two sons, Robert and Patrick (Natasha); two daughters, Sharon (James) Rusk and Lisa Marie (Glenn) Hesby, and six grandchildren. Funeral service for Sophie Burym, 78, of Sturgis, who died May 16 at
Preeceville Hospital, was held May 20 at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church,
Sturgis, with Rev. Michael Lomasziewicz officiating. Burial was in Canora
(Orthodox) cemetery with Preeceville Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
Jan. 25, 1924 in L'vov, Poland, to Anna and Stephan Jaworski, she was educated
at Donwell School. She married Alex Burym on March 7, 1943, at St. Andrew's
Church in Caragana, Sask. She was active in the Ukrainian Women's Association,
READ Club, and bowling club. Predeceased by her mother, Anna, on Aug. 23, 19G8, her father, Stephen, on Oct. 14, 1986, and her husband. Alex, on Jan. 23, 1976, she is survived by four daughters, Gloria (Mike) Rudnisky of Swan Plain, Elizabeth (Larry) Surcon of Yorkton, Carol (Ron) Harper of Regina, and Violet (Joe) Motile of Calgary; three sisters, Teenie Zolkavich of Porcupine Plain, Mary Bossy of Regina, and Olga (Walter) Balysky of Yorkton; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A private funeral service for Frank Edward Lozinski, 63, of Regina, and
formerly of the Tiny district, who died May 10, was held in Regina with Unser
Rist Funeral Home in care of arrangements. He was raised on a farm in the Tiny district. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; a daughter, Tamara (Stacy) Schill; a son, Travis (Darcie); five brothers, Bernie (Donna), John (Donna), Jim (Shirley), Walter (Sharon) and Albert (Sue); three sisters, Ann (Peter) Ostafichuk, Francis (Jim) Tulik and Jeanette (Phil) Kohlruss; a half-sister, Joanne; a half-brother, Dale; five step-sisters, Cathy, Helen, Sonia, Eleanor and Francis, and two grandchildren. |
