Canora Courier, May 29, 2002 HEADINGTON:
Funeral service for James Robert Headington, 64, of Wadena and formerly
of the Kuroki area, was held May 9 at the Wadena Curling Rink with Terry
Tompkins officiating. Burial was in Wadena Cemetery with Narfason's Funeral
Chapel and Crematorium in care of arrangements. Born
Aug. 5, 1937 to George and Jessie Headington, who farmed north of Kuroki, he
attended school at Scofield and Bear Lake. The family moved to Wadena in 1946
and he began working at the Wadena
News in 1953 while still
attending high school. In 1957, he entered into a partnership which owned the
newspaper. At the time of his death he was publisher of Wadena News and
Kelvington Radio. Predeceased by his father in 1945, he is survived by his wife, Marge; four children, Michelle (Randy) Neilson, Murray, Scott (Melody) and Brent (Claudia Gaugilitz): his mother; one brother, Gary (Bev); two sisters, Georgina (Tom) Benwell and Gail (Lorne) Mitchell, and three grandchildren. Funeral service for Mary M. Oucharek, 81, of Yorkton and formerly of
the Rhein district, who died at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home on May
9, was held May 14 from St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic church in Yorkton with
Rev. Bryan Bayda officiating. Burial was in Yorkton City Cemetery with
Bailey's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
Dec. 4, 1920 in Jaroslaw, Poland, to Alex and Anne (nee Rozansky) Shekula, she
immigrated to Canada in 1929 with her family, settling in the Ebenezer
district. In 1939, she married Mike Oucharek and the couple farmed in the
Rhein district until moving to Yorkton in 1957. She worked at the Yorkton
Union Hospital in the dietary department from 1958 until her retirement in
1975. She was active with the cultural centre and was a member of the UCWL. Predeceased by her parents, her husband in 2001, two sisters, Anne and Mildred, and a brother, Metro, she is survived by two sons, Emil (Jeanette) of Langley, B.C., and Wally (Joan) of Melville; one daughter, Delores of Yorkton; one brother, John (Mildred) Shekula of Yorkton; 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral service for Gene Ludba, 58, of Canora, who died May 24 at
Canora Hospital, was held May 28 at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church with
Rev. Hector Seville officiating. Burial was in the St. Peter and Paul Romanian
Orthodox Cemetery with Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
on Oct. 5, 1913, to George and Mary (Kozak) Ludba, he attended school in
Canora. After finishing school, he joined the militia. He married Eleanor
Fullawka on Nov. 11, 1965, in Canora. He worked in construction, operating
heavy equipment and truck driving. Predeceased by his father George and two brothers, Johnny and Ernie, he is survived by his wife Eleanor, his mother, Mary of Canora; a daughter, Barbara (Blaise) Beneze of Yorkton; two brothers, Robert (Ollie) of Canora and Jim of Grand Forks, B.C.; two sisters, Marie Ludba of Canora and Jeanette (Paul) Hryhoriw of Yorkton, and two grandchildren. Funeral service for Dora Byblow, 91, of Yorkton, who died May 10 at
the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, was held May 15 from St. Mary's Ukrainian
Catholic church in Yorkton with Rev. Dmytro Dnistrian officiating. Burial was
in Yorkton City Cemetery with Christie-Hill Funeral Chapel and Crematorium in
care of arrangements. Born
Feb. 2, 1911 in Austria to John and Pearl (nee Shumay) Popowich, she
immigrated to Canada with her family in 1912 when they settled in the
Whitesand district. She attended North Lake School and on Nov. 12, 1929, she
married Mike Byblow. The couple farmed in the Whitesand district until the
early 1970s, but had moved into Yorkton in 1953. Predeceased by her parents, a daughter, Lena, a sister, Pauline Chupa and a brother, Mike Popowich, he is survived by her husband; five sisters, Margaret Lypny of Toronto, Mary Wasylkiw of Yorkton, Ann (Paul) Tzupa of Buchanan, Kay (Matt) Diakow of Fernie, B.C. and Nettle (John) Zurowell of Winnipeg, and two brothers, Dan (Catherine) of Welland, Ont., and Bill (Olga) of Yorkton. Funeral service for Mike Zablotsky, 80, of Preeceville, who died May 21
at Canora Hospital, was held May 24 at the chapel of Preeceville Funeral Home
with Rev. J. Rac officiating. Burial was in Chechow Ukrainian Catholic
Cemetery, Preeceville district, with Preeceville Funeral Home in care of
arrangements. Born Sept. 22, 1912 in Preeceville to Harry and Belle Zablotsky, he was educated at Chechow School. He started working at 16, sawing wood and crushing grain. At 20, he farmed near Kitchen. He married Antonia Baron on June 14, 1941 at the Ukrainian Catholic church. In the spring of 1945, they bought a farm near Margo, where they farmed until 1966. Semi-retired, they moved into Saskatoon, where he worked at Great West Steel from 1967 to 1970. He built houses in 1970 and 1971, when they moved to Preeceville. Predeceased by his parents, Harry and Belle, sisters Doris and Lena Slobodan, and Ema Dennis, brothers Steve, Nick, and Jack Zablotsky, he is survived by his wife, Antonia, sons Bill of Preeceville and Ken of Saskatoon, daughter Joan Kokotailo of Riverside, Calif., sister Mary Slobodan of Regina, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service for Richard Wickenkamp, 87, of Edmonton, and
formerly of Stenen, who died May 21, was held May 25 at Appel Funeral Home
Central Memorial Chapel in Edmonton. He
was very young when his parents, Frank and Anna Wickenkamp, emigrated from the
United States and settled in the Stenen area. They farmed one mile west of the
junction of highways 9 and 49. He lived in Stenen until 1951 when he moved his
family to Norquay. In 1960 they moved to Edmonton. Predeceased by his parents, Frank and Emma, his first wife Minnie, his second wife Dale, a son Dwaine, a sister Esther and a brother Estelles, he is survived by a son, Larry (Anne) Grant of Edmonton, and two grandchildren. Funeral service for Lee Gorenko, 76, of Regina, and formerly of Canora,
who died May 19 at Regina General Hospital, was held May 22 at Leson's Funeral
Home with Marion Naduriak officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with
Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
on Jan. 10, 1926, in the Canora district to Samuel and Margalena (Ludba)
Gorenko, he attended school in Canora. While working on the family farm, he
delivered dairy products to Canora households. He married Elizabeth Kowch in
1946. He worked at Dan's Groceteria in Canora for 20 years. After his wife
died, he moved to Regina where he was employed by Saskatchewan Parks as a
purchasing manager for various locations in the province. On June 19, 1976, he
married Laura Dyck and they purchased a restaurant in Regina. Later, they
purchased a restaurant at Last Mountain Lake. When he retired in 1983, he
moved back to Regina. Predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Margalena, his first wife Elizabeth, two sisters Anne Patchett and Evelyn Dobson, and two brothers John and George, he is survived by his wife, Laura; a son, Eric of Regina; a step-son, Gary (Diane) Dyck of Nanaimo, B.C.; three step-daughters, Linda (Joe) Garner of Kamloops, Brenda (Darrell) Yakimowski of Weyburn and Sharon (Grant) McGary of Regina; two brothers, Mike of Yorkton and Alex (Kay) of Yorkton; a sister, Mary Williams of Fort Qu'Appelle; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral service for William (Bill) Charuk, 88, of the Canora Gateway
Lodge, who died May 23 at Canora Hospital, was hold May 27 at Leson's Funeral
Home with Rev. Peter Wasylenko officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery
with Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
on Aug. 22, 1913, in the Donwell district to John and Sophie (Skibinsky)
Charuk, he attended Bogucz School in Donwell and Canora School. When his
family moved to north of Tiny, he continued his schooling at Badgerdale
School. In 1942, he married Margaret Hanishewski and they farmed in the
Buchanan area. They later farmed in the Amsterdam area until 1985 when they
retired to Canora. In 2000, he became a resident of the Gateway Lodge. Predeceased by his parents, John and Sophie, two sisters Mary Charuk and Pauline Yaschyshyn, two brothers Fred and Nick, and a granddaughter Cacia Marie Baht, he is survived by his wife, Margaret; three daughters, Sylvia (John) Nicholls of Saskatoon, Linda (Peter) Dyck of Canora and Karen (Curtis) Baht of Pilot Butte; a brother, Harry (Frances) Charuk of Canora; two sisters, Anne Gushulak of Hamilton and Nettie Kozushka of Yorkton, and five grandchildren. Memorial service for Ronald Glen Groff, 63, of Saskatoon, and formerly
of Springside, Theodore and Invermay, who died Apr. 16 at St. Paul's Hospital
in Saskatoon, was held Apr. 20 at Narfason's Funeral Chapel in Wadena with
Roman Sutherland officiating. Burial was in the Clair Cemetery with Narfason's
Funeral Chapel and Crematorium in care of arrangements. Born
July 30, 1938 to Joseph and Isabella Groff at Springside, he attended school
in Theodore and Invermay then began a career with Canadian National Railways
as a telegraph operator. Work with the railway took him to various points
across Northern Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and in 1965, he and his
wife, Adelle, settled in Claire, where they stayed until 1977. Further moves
took them to Hudson Bay, Melville and finally Saskatoon where he retired as a
train dispatcher in 1993. He served as the president of the Claire Community
Hall board and was a member of the Clair Curling Club and the Mallard Minor
Hockey League. Predeceased by his parents, he is survived by his wife; two sons, Kim (Valarie) and Kerry, both of Saskatoon one daughter, Kelly (David) Harris of Saskatoon; a brother, Barry (Lillian); a sister, Carol of Regina, and two granddaughters. Canora Courier, May 29, 2002 MELNYK:
Mary (nee Zielinski) late of Valleyview Towers 2 of North Battleford,
formerly of Canora, passed away with her family at her side on Monday, May 27,
2002 at the age of 88. Mary was predeceased by
her parents, Harry and Katharine

Peter, daughter Pauline, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and
sisters Ann, Rose, Kay and Anna. Mary is lovingly remembered by her children

Funeral service for Beatrice Bigler, 77, of Porcupine Plain and formerly of
Hazel Dell, who died May 6 at the Porcupine/Carragana Hospital, was held May
11 at the Chelan Community Hall with Rev. Nancy Steinbachs officiating. Burial
was in the Chelan Hillcrest Cemetery with Blair's Funeral Home of Porcupine
Plain in care of arrangements. Born
July 9, 1924, to Stella and Mike Chimko on the family farm near Hazel Dell,
she moved with her family to the Chelan district in 1925. The attended
Pringleton School and school in Chelan. During the Second Word War she served
with the Canadian armed forces, stationed in Nanaimo, B.C. On Jan. 7, 1949,
she married Harold Lorne Bigler and the couple farmed near Steen until 1950
when they purchased a store in the community and later a cafe in Porcupine
Plain. The couple moved to Rose Valley where she was employed by the Bank of
Montreal and later became the postmistress. The family moved to Alberta in
1974 where she worked for the Bank of Montreal until retiring in 1984. She
served as a cadet leader and was a member of the Legion auxiliary. Predeceased by her parents, her husband and two brothers, Gilbert and Billy, she is survived by two sons, Garth (Mary) of Beechy and Mike (Brenda) of Rose Valley; two brothers, Mac (Joyce) of Chelan and Bob of Copalis Beach, Wash.; two sisters, Pauline and Jean, both of Porcupine Plain, and two grandsons. |
