Canora Courier, January 30, 2002 Noel
Simms: Noel
was born on Dec. 26, 1956
to David and Phyllis Simms and wad raised in Mount Norris, Co. Armagh,
Northern Ireland. Proud of his Irish roots, he often reminisced about growing
up in the small farming community. He obtained a certificate in Agricultural
Engineering and Animal Husbandry at Loughry Agricultural College, in Cookstown,
Co. Tyrone. Noel gained extensive farming and construction experience by
working in the family business. He came to Canada as a very young man because
of the political turmoil in Ireland and the dream of owning his own farm. After
marrying Beverley Salyn, Noel and his wife, purchased a farm in the Canora
area. They had two daughters Kathleen and Heather. A few years later they
returned to British Columbia. Noel
had various trades: carpentry, pipe fitting, water and road maintenance as
well as agriculture. He had a construction company in Vancouver, then taught
construction in Renton, Washington for two years. He met and married Linda
Demianiuk, whose children he also considered his own – Margaret, Grace and
Michael. Together they had a daughter Sheilagh. When the family broke up, he
and Grace moved to Regina to begin a new life. There he worked in
construction. Noel was proud to be a farmer and loved the farm he developed in
B.C. He Returned
to the Canora area to harvest
logs from his land. He spent many happy hours at this farm, trying to restore
it into a viable operation. His most recent hopes and dreams related to this
farm, where he lived some of his brightest and darkest moments. There
have been many peaks and valleys during his lifetime, but Noel always tried to
do good deeds. He loved animals and his family. In his short life, he touched
many of us in a positive way and will be greatly missed. Predeceased by his father in 1994. Noel is survived by his companion Yvonne Strocen, his three daughters Kathleen, Heather and Sheilagh, his stepchildren: Margaret, Grace and Michael.
