Canora Courier December 01, 2004 Page B4 KLIMCHUK: Quietly and peacefully, with family members present, on Nov. 22, 2004, at the age of 92 years, Sophie passed away at the George Boyak Centre in Calgary, Alberta. Born in 1912 in Donwell, Sask., Sophie was the youngest of nine children born to Nicholai and Polly Toffan, who emigrated from the Ukraine in 1897. The family settled in the Donwell area as one of the first of many young pioneering farming families in the region. She was predeceased by her husband, Alexander, in 1992. Sophie leaves behind daughter Evelyn Malone of Calgary, and her four children, Mark (Anne), Clint (Merion), David (Debbie), and Lynne (Kevin); son Arthur (Patricia) of Calgary and his children Garth (Marianne) and Glen (Christa) of New York City and Houston, respectively; and daughter Cynthia (Bill) of Gabriola Island, B.C., and her three daughters Monique, Natalie and Alicia. Sophie was blessed with 10 great-grandchildren. She also leave behind numerous nieces and nephews in the Canora and Yorkton area. Her family was her pride and joy, and she held dear to family values. Sophie and Alex lived the majority of their married years in Hyas (over 40 years), where Alex was a teacher and the school principal. Sophie was a very active community member, belonging to numerous clubs and organizations over the many years she lived in Hyas. She was one of the original founding members of Hyas Golden Age Seniors’ Centre. One of her favourite clubs was the Hyas Horicultural Society, of which she became president and spent many years participating in the artistic garden shows held at Hyas Hall with her dear friends. Sophie’s begonias and geraniums put a sparkle in her eye as well as in her garden. Sophie had many talents and skills which were evident in her daily life. She designed and decorated intricate wedding cakes for many brides in the community and for family members. To know Sophie was to know her love of card game-- playing crib, canasta, whist and gin rummy at the senior centre. Bingo was yet another love. Her domestic skills were many. She was a seamstress, she crocheted and baked. Sophie passed on the Ukrainian traditions and culture to the next generation. After Alex’s death, Sophie left Yorkton for Calgary to be closer to family, where she remained until her passing. Sophie’s generosity, wit, laughter and sense of humour gave her a special place in the lives of her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all. A visitation was held Thursday, Nov. 25 at the chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, with Marion Naduriak officiating. Joanne Klimchuk and Kathy Ostafichuk also assisted with beautiful music. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan as tokens of remembrance.
