Canora Courier November 10, 2004 Page 12 ADAMS: Funeral service for Olga Adams, 87, of Yorkton, and formerly of Norquay, who died Nov. 1 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, was held Nov. 5 at Leson’s Funeral Home in Canora with Rev. Frances Patterson officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Oct. 1, 1917, in the Arran district to Yakym and Michaelina (Malynska) Nahnybida, she attended the Pedolia District School. She married Frank Adams on Oct. 23, 1938, in Arran and they farmed north of Norquay. In the late 1970s, they moved to Norquay. After she suffered a stroke in the fall of 1996, she moved to Yorkton to live with her daughter, Frances (John) Boulton. Predeceased by her parents, Yakym and Michaelina, a daughter, Rose Marie, three sisters, Jean Pangracs, Dorothy Lukey and Stella Kratchkowsky, and three brothers, Miroslav, Eugene and Rudy, she is survived by her husband, Frank of Yorkton; a daughter, Frances (John) Boulton of Yorkton; two sisters, Sally Hubic of Yorkton and Levina Wintonyk of Yorkton; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Canora Courier November 10, 2004 Page 12 DORASH: Funeral service for Helen Dorash, 93, of Surry, B.C., and formerly of Canora, who died Nov. 4 at Surrey Memorial Hospital, was held Nov. 9 at the Dormition of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Uspenska, south-west of Canora, with Rev. Peter Wasylenko officiating. Burial was in the Uspenska parish cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Nov. 8, 1910, in the Buchanan district to Nick and Gafia (Wolkowski) Choboter, she attended Mamornitz School. She married Wasyl Dorash in November of 1928 and they farmed west of Canora. They spent the winter months in the Prince Rupert and Surrey areas. Predeceased by husband, Wasyl, her parents, Nick and Gafia, a daughter, Olga in infancy, two sons, Tom and Wilbert, two sisters, Annie Kyzyk and Rosie Matwijeczko; three brothers, Peter, Bill and George, and her companion for many years, Peter Baulin, she is survived by a son, Gene of Surrey; a daughter, Jeannette of Surrey; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Canora Courier November 10, 2004 Page 12 HASTINGS: A memorial service for Herbert Melvin Hastings, 98, of Wadena, and formerly of the Kuroki district, who died Oct. 13 at Wadena Hospital, was held Oct. 17 at Tompkins Funeral Home with Terry Tompkins officiating. In inurnment service was held at Good Hope Cemetery with Tompkins Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on May 26, 1916, in Waukon, Iowa, his family moved back to the Kuroki district in 1918. They lived in the Sub-Rosa district and in 1927 moved to the Bear Lake district, where he attended school. At the age of 15, he began working away from home, doing everything from cooking in a fishing camp and cutting pulpwood to being a heavy equipment operator. In 1946, he began farming. In 1972, he moved to Wadena. Predeceased by his parents, Irving and Mary, and a brother, Henry, he is survived by his sisters, Merle (Bill) Hanchuk, Blanche (Sid) White and Effie (Jack) Colville. Canora Courier November 10, 2004 Page 12 HASKEWICH: Funeral service for Edward Henry Haskewich, 78, of Canora, and formerly of Preeceville, who died Oct. 30 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, was held Nov. 5 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Canora with Rev. Andrew Sowa officiating. Prairie View Crematorium near Saskatoon was in care of the cremation. Born on Dec. 7, 1925, in Imperial, Sask., to Louis and Lena Haskewich, he attended school in Rama. He married Anne Dugalo on July 12, 1954. Among the many businesses that he owned and operated were a land clearing and road construction business, a construction business, a tire shop and carwash, a lumber mill and he farmed in the Tadmore, Endeavour and Crystal Lake area. Predeceased by his parents, Louis and Lena, and a brother, Lionel, he is survived by his wife, Anne of Canora; four sons, Evert and Gary of Vancouver, Lew of Calgary and Mel of Edmonton; a brother, Glen of Canora, and two sisters, Charlotte of Preeceville and Isabel of Wetaskawin. Canora Courier November 10, 2004 Page 12 PROKOPCHUK: Funeral service for Mary Prokopchuk, 89, of Yorkton, who died Oct. 3, was held Oct. 8 at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton with Rev. Roman Kocur officiating. Burial was at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Bailey’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. She was born in the Veregin district on July 13, 1913 to John and Anna (Achtemichuk) Hubelit. Predeceased by her parents, her step-mother, Irene, three brothers, Peter, George and John Hubelit, and two sisters, Alvina Eftoda and Nettie Trafananko, she is survived by two daughters, Verna (Michael) Andrychuk of Kamsack and Gladys (Albert) Kardash of Lethbridge, Alta.; two sons, Bert Armstrong of Kamloops, B.C., and Norm (May) Prokopchuk of Edmonton; three sisters, Elsie Zelinski, Kay (Paul) Derkatch and Helen Schnick; on brother, Alex Hubelit; nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Canora Courier November 10, 2004 Page B5 ZIELINSKI: Funeral service for Stan Zielinksi, 63, of Canora, who died Nov. 3 at Canora Hospital, was held Nov. 8 at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian catholic Church in Canora with Rev. Joakim Rac officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Dec. 9, 1940, in the Mikado district to John and Lena (Sokoloski) Zielinski, he received his education at Zukunft School, Mikado School, Canora High School and the University of Saskatchewan school of agriculture. He returned to farm with is parents. He married Sharon Pickering on Oct. 23, 1965 in Canora. They lived on the farm until moving to Canora in August of 1987. In addition to grain farming, he raised wild boars and pigs. He worked for Canora Funeral Chapel in the 1960s and for the past seven years helped, Ron Nykolaishen with farm work. He was an avid curler and played with a local band called Little Elvis and the Rhythm Bopps. Predeceased by his parents, John and Lena, and a sister, Sylvia Hryhoriw, he is survived by his wife, Sharon; three sons, Darcy (Tammy) of Pilot Butte, Blake (Sandy) of Mikado and Stanley (Marla) of Kamsack; two daughters, Lea-Anne (Kevin) Sunduk of Saskatoon and Stacey-Lynn (Mark) Bolton of Saskatoon; a sister, Marie (Gene) Krepakevich, and 16 grandchildren. Canora Courier November 10, 2004 Page B5 DUTCHAK: Funeral service for Fred Teodor Dutchak, 91, of Canora, who died Oct. 31 at the Canora Gateway Lodge, was held Nov. 6 at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity with Rev. Peter Wasylenko officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Aug. 10, 1913, in the Canora district to Teodor and Mary (Melnychuk) Dutchak, he attended Dniester School. He worked as a farm labourer for eight years before operating his own farm near Buchanan. He married Nettie Terlesky at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canora on June 22, 1935. In 1943, he began managing the Buchanan Flour Mill and in 1947 he became a grain buyer for the Canada West Grain Company in Canora. As the agent in the same elevator, he worked for Ogilvie’s which owned the elevator for six years and the, starting in 1959, he worked for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. In 1966, the old elevator was demolished and a new one was constructed. He retired from the Pool in 1978. He played baseball in his youth and, later, managed the junior club. In 1952, he was elected to Canora town council and served as an alderman for 16 years. He served on the Canora Union Hospital board for eight years and served as president of the Canora branch of the Fish and Game League. He was a volunteer firefighter for 29 years, nine of which he served as fire chief. In 1978, he received the Canadian Silver Jubilee Medal along with a citation “In recognition of valuable service to the nation.” He was a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and a long-time member of the church choir. Predeceased by his wife, Nettie, his parents, Teodor and Mary; triplet sisters, Helen Boychuk, and two in infancy, and three brothers, Mike, John and Bill, he is survived by a son, Alfred of Langley, B.C.; two daughters, Marge Shewchuk of Canora and Beverly (Brian) Friesen of Richmond, B.C.; three brothers, Nick Dutchak of Prince Albert, George (Mary) Dutchak of Lake Field, Ont., and Steve (Nora) Dutchak of Courtney, B.C.; a sister, Anne (Lysle) Cross of Hudson Bay; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Fond memories over a lifetime are still remembered of you even though this is the 10th anniversary of your passing. You obviously meant a lot to many people.
