Two persons charged with second-degree murder of Canora man

The two persons charged with the second-degree murder of Ed Gorski, 53, of Canora are to appear in Provincial Court in Canora on Thursday.

Marina Quewezance, 30, of the Kamsack district and Brian Thompson, 41, of the Canora district have been charged and made their first court appearance in Pelly on Oct. 26.  The pair were remanded into custody.

Police were called to a residence on the 100 block of Third Avenue East in Canora mid-afternoon on Oct. 24 where the deceased’s body was located, according to Cpl. Brian Jones, an RCMP media relations officer.  The Canora RCMP were assisted by the Yorkton RCMP Forensics Section and the Regina RCMP Major Crimes Unit in the investigation.

Car-semi fatality involves Canora driver

A 35-year-old Canora district man was treated and released following a collision between a semi-trailer unit and a car which left one person dead near Chamberlain on Monday.

The Canora man was driving the semi-trailer unit north on Highway No. 2 where it collided with a south-bound car about five miles south of Chamberlain Monday afternoon, said Cpl. Brian Jones, an RCMP media relations spokesman.  The care caught fire following the impact and the lone occupant of the care died at the scene.

The accident scene made it necessary to reroute traffic for several hours into the evening and concerns were heightened when it was realized that the semi unit was carry anhydrous ammonia, he said.  The condition of the load was later deemed to be safe.

No names were being released, Jones said Tuesday.  Information regarding the deceased was also not being released.

HALMO:  Funeral service fore Steve Halmo, 91, of Wadena, and formerly of the Kuroki district, who died Oct. 1 at the Pleasant View Care Home in Wadena, was held Oct. 4 at St. Mary’s Church in Wadena with Rev. Pius Schroh officiating.  Burial was in St. Helen’s Cemetery in Kuroki with Narfason’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born in Brodzany, Czechoslovakia, on Dec. 14, 1913, he immigrated to Canada and settled in the Kuroki district in 1929.  He married Anna Kieltyka on Dec. 30, 1942.  He was active in the community, servicing on the credit union board of directors, the local school board and the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool committee.  He was active in St. Helen’s parish and the Knights of Columbus.  In 1999, they retired to Wadena.

Predeceased by a sister, Mary Halmo, he is survived by his wife, Anna; two daughters, Joan (Michael) Pomedli of Saskatoon and Donalda (Raymond) Walter of Kuroki; a brother, Rudy (Norma) of Simcoe, Ont.; a sister, Anne Crane of Barrie, Ont.; and four grandchildren.

GUY:  Funeral service for Georgina (Jean) Guy, 81, of Lintlaw, who died Sept. 29 at Kelvington Hospital, was held Oct. 5 at Lintlaw Recreation Centre with Rev. Dan Hughes officiating.  Burial was in the Lintlaw Cemetery with Lintlaw Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born on Jan. 28, 1924, to Fred and Emma Scheller in Springside, she attended school in Okla.  She was a housekeeper for Mr. And Mrs. Palmer Shots.  She married Jack Guy on Nov. 10, 1943 and they lived 10 miles south of Lintlaw.  They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary just eight months before he died.

Predeceased by her parents, Fred and Emma, her husband, Jack, seven brothers, Robert, John, Norman, Ernest, Cecil, Herbert and Clifford, and two sisters, Mabel and Margaret, she is survived by a son, Clifford (Carol); two brothers, William and Melfort; four sisters, Gladys, Emily, Mildred and Hazel; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

MOGOR:  Funeral service for Sidney “Dashy” Mogor, 83, of Kamsack, who died Oct. 12 at the Kamsack and District Nursing Home, was held Oct. 15 at First Baptist Church in Yorkton with Pastor Steven Rosluk officiating.  Burial was at the Saltcoats Cemetery with Christie Hill Funeral Chapel and Crematorium of Yorkton in care of arrangements.

Born Dec. 15, 1921 in Mihalyhaza, Hungary, to Frank and Karolina Mogor, he immigrated to Canada in 1923, settling in Welland, Ont., then moving to Yorkton.  He moved to the Saltcoats area and on Dec. 1, 1942, he enlisted in the army and was assigned o the Oxford Rifles First Battalion.  After basic training, he was sent to the Pacific Coast in 1943, and was discharged in 1945.  In February, 1952, he married Annabelle Cleaveley.  In 1967, he moved to Yorkton, where he worked at Leon’s Manufacturing, as well as continuing to farm until 1972.  He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the First Baptist Church congregation.

Predeceased by his parents, and his wife of 44 years, Annabelle, he is survived by three daughters, Carol (Brian) Freeman of Lloydminster, Georgette (Kenn) Heshka of Canora and Sharon (Brian) Pedde of Yorkton; his wife, Alma of Yorkton; three sisters, Emma (Don) Shantz of Waterloo, Ont., Violet Frise of Yorkton and Olga Mogor of London, Ont., and seven grandchildren.

O’SOUP:  Funeral service for Marilyn Bernice O’Soup, 53, of The Key First Nation, who died Oct. 25 at Regina General Hospital, was held at the Key First nation Saulteauplex with Pastor Ernie Keshane and Allan O’Soup officiating.  Burial was in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born in Norquay on July 25, 1952, to Spencer and Lucy (Quewezance) O’Soup, she attended North Willowgrove School until Grade 2.  She then attended Norquay School until Grade 8.  She attended Dr. Brass School and graduated from Yorkton Regional High School.  She attended university for a period before going to work in Vancouver.  She worked in Edmonton, Regina and Yorkton before returning to The Key First Nation.  She worked in home care, as a welfare worker and as a receptionist at The Key First Nation.  She attended the Keeseekoose Full Gospel Church regularly.

Predeceased by her father, Spencer, and a brother, Francis Lloyd, she is survived by her mother, Lucy Quewezance; three brothers, Lynn (Pearline) O’Soup of the Key First Nation, Fernie O’Soup of the Key First Nation and Shelwin O’Soup of Saskatoon, and five sisters, Frances (Ray) Auckland of Vancouver, Judy (Gil) O’Soup of Edmonton, Susan (Craig) O’Soup of Mission, B.C., Lorraine O’Soup of Vancouver and Myrna (Verne) O’Soup of Winnipeg.

BODNAREK:  Funeral service for John Bodnarek, 79, of Yorkton, and formerly of Rhein, who died Oct. 9 at Yorkton Regional Health Centre, was held Oct. 15 at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton with Rev. Roman Kocur and Rev. Nicholas Rauliuk officiating.  Burial was at Yorkton City Cemetery with Bailey’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born May 19, 1926 in Rhein to Ted and Agnes (nee Babiuk) Bodnarek, he attended Luzan School and began his working career at a dry cleaners in Kamsack.  On Oct. 15, 1949, he married Pauline Prokopetz of Hamton at Holy Transfiguration church and in 1952, the couple moved to Yorkton where he worked at Martin’s Bakery and then at McGavin’s Bakery until his retirement.

Predeceased by his parents, three brothers, Mike, Walter and Nick, and a sister, Ann in infancy, he is survived by his wife; two daughters, Angie (Ron) Klein of Saskatoon and Audrey (Walter) Wasyluk of Winnipeg; four sisters, Lena (John) Korol of Canora, Mary Bodnarek of Vancouver, Alice Bates of Calgary and Bernice (Alvin) Yarechewski of Winnipeg; one brother, Ted (Rose) of Kamsack; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
