Betty (Larson) Tabin, age 65, of Thompson, Man., passed away on Saturday, Jan. 29.  She leaves behind her son, Michael, and daughter, Marianne and family of Thompson, her mother, Annie Larson of Wadena, and her sister, Linda (Bob) Willson of Invermay.

Stella Suchoboki of Regina, Formerly of Yorkton and Invermay, has passed away.  Stella and Alex Suchoboki opened a café in Invermay in 1948 and operated it until 1964, when they moved to Yorkton.  The funeral was held in Yorkton on Monday, Feb. 7

HANCHEROFF:  Annie Kreschuk (Hancheroff) a long-time resident of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005.  Annie was born on April 7, 1912 to Timothy and Dora (nee Nichvolodoff) Hancheroff at the Doukhobor village near Good Spirit Lake.  She attended Devil’s Lake School.  Predeceased by her parents, four sisters.  Mary Fofonoff, Polly Hancheroff, Mable Krukoff and Hazel Legebokoff, and four brothers, Tim, George, Sam and Paul, she is survived by one sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.  A graveside cremation service will be held at a later date.  Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Christie-Hill Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, Yorkton, Sask.

SUCHOBOKI:  Funeral service for Stella Suchoboki, 87, of Regina, and formerly of the Rama district, who died Feb. 4 at the Pioneer Village in Regina, was held Feb. 7 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Methodius Kushko officiating.  Burial was in Yorkton City Cemetery with Bailey’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.  Born in the Dobrowody district on Oct. 12, 1917, to Stephan and Maria Tretiak, she attended Dobrowody School.  She married Alex Suchoboki in 1936 and they farmed in the Bienfait area.  Their next move was to Invermay, where they operated a café for 17 years.  They moved to Yorkton where they managed an apartment building and she cooked at Corona Motor Hotel, Sacred Heart Academy and St. Mary’s Cultural Centre.  She was a long-time member of St. Mary’s parish where she served with the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League branch executive.  She moved to Regina and then to Lockport for a year.  She returned to Regina in 1995.  She spent her last years at Pioneer Village.  Predeceased by her parents, Maria and Stephen Tretiak, a daughter, Sophie, her husband, Alex, three brothers Michael, Walter and Nick, and four sisters, Ethel Petryshen, Olga Wilgosh, Grace Susheski and Ann Diakow, she is survived by a son, Eugene (Yvonne); four daughters, Donna (Tim) Davies, Marie (Barry) Frey, Gladys (Ed) Brodziak and Carol Shaw; a sister, Viola Batenchuk; 16 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren.

CHEROPITA:  Funeral service for George Cheropita, 93, of Canora, who died Jan. 25 at Canora Hospital, was held Jan. 28 at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Sheho with Rev. Roman Kocur officiating.  Burial was in the parish cemetery in Sheho with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.  Born on May 5, 1911, in the Buchanan district to Alex and Magdalina (Pindus) Cheropita, he attended Oleksince School and then farmed with his parents.  On Nov. 16, 1934, he married Donna Pasishnyk of Tuffnel and they farmed in the Golden Vale district.  He was known for playing the fiddle at Ukrainian weddings and singing, dancing and carolling at Christmas time.  He was the cantor at the Mamornitz Church for 40 years and was a member of the Mamornitz and Sheho Orthodox churches.  Predeceased by his parents, Alex and Magdalina, a brother, Eli, two sisters, Katie Berezowski and Dora Gawrelitza, and four step-sisters, Ann Zawarich, Mary Vitkowski, Lena Splawnick and Maggie Tomchyshen, he is survived by his wife Donna of Canora; a son, Ivan Cheropita of Buchanan; a daughter, Pauline (Lloyd) Unick of Buchanan, and two grandchildren.

KEAST:  A memorial service for former Canora residents, William and Jean Keast of Mara Lake, B.C., is being planned for the late spring in the Mara Lake Region with Mountain View Funeral Home of Armstrong, B.C., in care of arrangements.  William, 89, died on Dec. 28 at Parkview Place Nursing Home in Enderby, B.C., and Jean, 88, died on Jan. 8 at Salmon Arm Hospital.  William was born on Apr. 26, 1915, in Canora to David and Lucy Keast while Jean was born on Jan. 4, 1917, in Macoun, Sask., to Alexander and Eva Crouse.  William graduated from Canora High School and in addition to being self-employed, managed the Canora Furniture and Appliances store.  Jean graduated as a registered nurse from the Grey Nun’s Hospital in Regina and came to Canora in 1938 to work at Canora Hospital.  In 1962, she assumed the position of director of nursing, a position she held until she retired in 1981.  William retired about a year earlier.  They were married in Canora in 1946.  A few years after entering retirement, they moved to Mara.  Jean was active in the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses’ Association just prior to and after her retirement.  Both were predeceased by their parents, but Jean was also predeceased by two brothers, Ted and Oliver Crouse and four sisters, Alice, Clara, Marion and Josephine.  They are survived by a son, David, of Lac La Biche, Alta., and a 13-year-old grandson, Michael.  Jean is also survived by a sister, Josephine Stankevich of Kamloops, B.C.

JACQUEMART:  Funeral service for Leo Jacquemart, 73, of Canora and Norquay, who died Jan. 29 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, was held Feb. 1 at Leson’s Funeral Home with Rev. Darrell Reine officiating.  Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.  Born on Sept. 12, 1931, in Prince Albert to Otto and Mary (Inglehart) Jacquemart, he attended Kalina and Pine Valley schools.  In the Mid-1940s, his family moved to Norquay.  He farmed with his father and worked for neighbours.  He worked at a variety of jobs, including working at saw mills, mining at Snow Lake, road construction and for the CN, but farming was his true calling.  In the 1950s, he purchased some land and homesteaded seven miles north of Norquay.  He married Elsie Sushelnitski-Marendiuk on Nov. 18, 1962.  Due to her health problems, they moved to Canora in 1990.  In 1998, he suffered a heart attack and his kidneys began to fail due to diabetes.  In 1999, they moved to the Aspen Bluff Villa in Yorkton.  Predeceased by his parents, Otto and Mary, and a stepson, Bernie Marendiuk, he is survived by his wife, Elsie; a son, George Chernowski of Gibson, B.C.; twin daughters, Karen (Gary Vertefeuile) Charles of Regina and Koreen (Derrick) Kopelchuk of Oxbow; two step-sons, Wayne (lone) Marendiuk of Regina and Leonard Marendiuk of Canora; a step-daughter, Jean (Bill) Zywot of Barrie, Ont.; a brother, Jack (Marlene) Jacquemart of Norquay; three sisters, Joey Jacquemart of Norquay, Margaret (Arthur) Raine of Regina and Delphine (Derek) Howard of Norquay, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

LUNGUL:  Sam N. Lungul, beloved husband of Alice Lungul of Yorkton and formerly of Buchanan, Sask., passed away suddenly on January 19, 2005 at the age of 75.  Sam was born and raised in the Buchanan District on April 21, 1929 to Nick and Lillie (nee Woykin) Lungul.  He attended the Gravel Hill and Woodhurst schools, finishing school in 1944.  He had a love for farming and farm animals, especially horses which were his pride and joy.  When there wasn’t much to do at home, he worked for his neighbours.  Sam began his career as a Grain Buyer at Dernic in 1947 and Canada West Grain Co. both in Buchanan and Paddockwood.  In 1953, he became the elevator agent in Buchanan until 1973.  In 1967, Sam was elected as councillor for the Village of Buchanan until 1970.  On December 12, 1970, Sam married Alice Wowchuk (nee Dutchak) who had two daughters Cheryl and Cyndie Wowchuk which he gained through marriage and cherished as his own.  In July of 1973, Sam and Alice purchased the Hyas Hotel operating it until September of 1974 when they moved to Preeceville, SK.  Sam was an assistant agent for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in Veregin, SK, Sturgis, SK and Preeceville, SK from 1975 to 1981.  In July of 1981, Sam and Alice purchased the MacNutt Hotel which they operated until May of 1985, when they relocated to Yorkton, SK.  He was employed by the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance in Melville, SK until his retirement in 1994.  Sam will be dearly missed by his family and friends.  Same is lovingly remembered by his wife Alice of Yorkton; his two daughters, Cheryl and Cyndie Wowchuk, both of Saskatoon:  his brother Peter (Pauline) Lungul of Yorkton; three nieces and their families, Barbara (Sidney) Dawe of Invermay, SK, Patti (Bob) Anderson of Yorkton and Beverly (Brian) Eckhart of Yorkton; sister-in-law Diane (Gary) Dietz and family of Buchanan; brothers-in-law Alfred Dutchak of Toronto, ON, and Ernest (Teenie) Dutchak and family of Oakville, ON, as well as numerous cousins.  Sam was predeceased by his parents Nick and Lillian Lungul and parents-in-law John and Annie Dutchak.  A Memorial Service for Sam will be held at a later date.  Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan as tokens of remembrance.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, 563-5671.

GRYBA:  Funeral service for Mabel Gryba, 88, of Swan River, and formerly of Whitebeech, who died Jan. 19, was held Jan. 25 at Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Swan River With Rev. Michael Lomaszkiewicz officiating.  Burial was at Birchwood Cemetery in Swan River with Paull Funeral Home and Crematorium in care of arrangements.

Born July 31, 1916 at Pine River, Man., to Joseph and Katrina Rutka, she attended Vimy Ridge School then moved to The Pas to work.  She married John Gryba on Feb. 24, 1935.  The couple moved to a farm at Whitebeech in 1943, then five years later they moved to Big Woody.  In 1986, they moved to Swan River, and she moved to the Swan River Valley Personal Care Home in 2004.

Predeceased by her parents, her step-mother, her husband in 1987, four brothers, Stanley, Martin, Carl and Tony Rutka, and two sisters, Mary and Helen, she is survived by three sons, Nestor (Renate) of Edmonton, Martin of Swan River and Eugene (Mila) of Calgary; four daughters, Natalie Trebick of Canora, Mary (Bert) Jenner of Swan River, Julie (Lawrence) Chrun of Cudworth and Angie Saseniuk of Swan River; on brother, Walter Rutka of Pine River; two sisters, Victoria Pritchard of Brandon, Man., and Veronica Hutton of Abbotsford, B.C.; 15 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Vicky Shewchuk passed away at the Invermay lodge on Saturday night.  Funeral is planned for later this week.
