Funeral service for Vicky Shewchuk was held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Ukrainian Catholic church in Rama.  Interment was at the Ukrainian Catholic cemetery and dinner followed at the Ukrainian hall.

SHEWCHUK:  Funeral service for Victoria Shewchuk, 73, of Invermay, who died Feb. 6 at the Invermay Health Centre, was held Feb. 10 at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Rama with Rev. Andrew Wasylenko officiating.  Burial was in the SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, south of Rama, with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.  Born on Mar. 17, 1931, in Invermay to Ben and Mary (Olyniuk) Pukal, she worked in various places such as the Invermay Hotel, SaskPower, as a cook in the Canora Hospital and as a nurses’ aide in the Invermay Hospital and home care aide for the Assiniboine Valley Health District.  She married Leonard Shewchuk on Oct. 19, 1953, at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Rama.  Predeceased by her parents, Ben and Mary Pukal, she is survived by her husband, Leonard; seven sons, Phillip (Geraldine) of Rama, Dexter (Darlene) of Rama, Daren (Linda) of Preeceville, Stewart (Tannis) of Hinton, Alta., Trent (Maureen) of Wembley, Alta., Collin (Loraine) of Wetaskiwin, Alta., and Wilden of Red Deer, Alta.; three daughters, Joanne (Louis) Korchinski of Rama, Grace (Alfred) Kotyk of Rama and Vereen (Dalla) Swan of Preeceville; two brothers, Lou (Vera) Pukal of Vernon, B.C., and Joe (Louise) Pukal of Invermay; two sisters, Irene (Ed) Brezinski of Invermay and Ann (Don) Green of Bula, Man.; 27 grandchildren, and one great-grandchildren.

HAICHERT:  Nellie (Okrainetz) passed away peacefully at the age of 79 years at the Luther Special Care Home, Saskatoon, on Saturday, January 15, 2005.  Nell was born on March 1, 1925 on the farm near Rama, Sask.  After leaving school and helping on the family farm for a few years, she left for Saskatoon where she gained employment at the Bessborough Hotel.  While in Saskatoon, Nell met and married Aug Haichert.  Nell also worked as a meat cutter in various OK stores in Saskatoon.  Nell enjoyed gardening, curling, golfing and on occasion a trip down south to the casino with her girlfriends.  Nell was predeceased by her parents, Mike and Mary Okrainetz; sister, Annie; brothers, Tom, Wasil, Steve and Paul; sisters-in-law, Jean and Sylvia; brothers-in-law, Leslie and Fred; as well as several nephews and nieces.  Nell is survived by her husband, Aug; sisters, Adeline (John), Rose, Stella (Stephen); brothers, Peter (Liz), Joe, Mike (Olga), Frank (Jenny), Carl (Nettie); sisters-in-law, Liz, Agnes, Hazel and Marie; brothers-in-law, Peter; and numerous nephews and nieces.  Funeral service was held on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005 at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Saskatoon Funeral Home, conducted by Pastor Ron Propp.  Interment took place in the Woodlawn Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society (438 2nd Avenue North, Saskatoon, Sask., S7K 2C3).

MITTEN:  Funeral service for Archie Mitten, 75, of Canora, who died Feb. 11 at Canora Hospital, was held Feb. 14 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Canora with Rev. Hector Seville officiating.  Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of the arrangements.  Born on Dec. 16, 1929, in Welby, Sask., to Ernest and Florence (Caplette) Mitten, he attended school in Welby.  He learned Morse Code in his spare time and at the age of 19 was hired by the Canadian National Railway.  Beginning in B.C., he worked in about 50 locations during his career with CN.  When he returned to the prairies and settled in Watrous, he married Mary Toumainen on Sept. 28, 1954.  They lived in various places in Manitoba including 25 years in Yarbo.  The CN centralized its accounting system and the Mitten family moved to Melville.  In 1982, he became the agent in Canora.  In 1989, he retired after a 41-year career with CN.  He was involved with the community in sports, the Knights of Columbus, the housing authority, and the Canora Charities Association.  He was involved with St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church.  Even after being diagnosed with cancer in 2004, he tried to maintain his involvement in the community.  Predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Florence, his daughter, Joslyn, and two brothers, Karl and Donald, he is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Kyle of Sparwood, B.C., and James of Canora; four daughters, Dianne (Richard) Olson of Melville, Wendy White of Gobbons, Alta., Marla (Bruce) Landine of Stockholm and Barbara (Don) Fitzsimmons of Regina; three sisters, Merle (Harold) Brunsch of Hafford, Fern (Henry) Surman of Spy Hill and Gloria (Melvin) Maduke of Yorkton; 14 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

TURGEON:  Graveside service for Paul Edmond Turgeon of Thunder Bay, and formerly of Kamsack, who died at the Thunder Bay Health Sciences Centre Sept. 17, was held at the Mountain View Cemetery with Rev. Dan Lapolla officiating.  His memory will be recalled during an annual dedication service June 26 with Blake Funeral Chapel of Thunder Bay in care of arrangements.

Born and raised in Kamsack to Marie Emma and Paul Turgeon, he began his career with the Canadian National Railway in Kamsack, where he married Vera Davis, the widow of Harry Davis, a former owner of this newspaper.  In 1961, he was transferred to Thunder Bay, where he continued working for the railway until his retirement in 1986.

Predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Vera May in 1990, two sisters, Marie and Bernadette, and three brothers, Bernard, Albert and Wilford, he is survived by his wife, Linda Buchan; her children, Robin (Marie) and Peggy Buchan; one daughter, Sharon (Italo) DeRocco; two sons, John (Sylvia) Davis of Didsbury, Alta., and Paul Theresa Turgeon of Kelowna, B.C.; two sisters, Evangeline and Albertine; one brother, Gilbert; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

OLSON:  A memorial service for Fred Olson, 84, of Wadena, and formerly of the Kuroki district, who died Jan. 21, was held Jan. 26 at Tompkins Funeral Home with Terry Tompkins officiating.  Interment of cremains will be held at a later date.

Born on Jan. 25, 1920, in the Kuroki district to Gust and Minnie Olson, he farmed for a short period before joining the Air Force as a navigator during the Second World War.  When he returned from the war he left the farm and moved to Wadena, where he cared for his parents.  Within a year of marrying Connie Moore in 1978, he became a widower.  He was well known for playing the violin and taught a number of persons how to play.  Having made several violins during his lifetime, he gave them to his students.  He worked in construction for many years and made many pieces of furniture.

Predeceased by his parents, Gust and Minnie, his wife, Connie, a sister, Edna Eyre and a brother, George, he is survived by six sisters, Louise, Helen (Larry), Emma (Lindal), Dora(Elmer), Hilda and Olive; and a brother, Harvey.

SUCHOBOKI:  Funeral service for Stella Suchoboki, 87, of Regina, and formerly of the Rama district, who died at Pioneer village in Regina on Feb. 4, was held Feb. 7 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Methodius Kushko officiating.  Burial was at Yorkton City Cemetery with Bailey’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born in Dobrowody, north of Rama on Oct. 12, 1917 to Maria and Stephan Tretiak, she attended school in the district.  She married Alex Suchoboki in 1936 and the couple moved to Bienfait, then to Invermay where they operated a café for 17 years before moving to Yorkton to manage an apartment building.  She cooked at the Corona Hotel, Sacred heart Academy and at St. Mary’s parish where she served on the executive committee of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League.  She moved to Regina, then to Lockport for a year before returning to Regina in 1995.

Predeceased by her parents, a daughter, Sophie in 1939, her husband in 1978, three brothers, Michael, Walter and Nick, and four sisters, Ethel Petryshen, Olga Wilgosh, Grace Susheski and Ann Diakow, she is survived by five children, Eugene (Yvonne), Donna (Tim Davies), Marie (Barry Frey), Gladys (Ed Brodziak) and Carol Shaw; one sister, Viola Bartenchuk; 16 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren.
