BEREZNIUK:  Funeral service for Emil Boris Berezniuk, 55, of Saskatoon, and formerly of the Stenen district, who died July 23 at Saskatoon City Hospital, was held July 27 at Leson’s Funeral Home with Rev. Rod Luciuk officiating.  Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born on Sept. 9, 1949, to Roman and Lena (Anaka) Berezniuk in Canora, he attended George Albert Elementary School in the Stenen district and Sturgis Composite High School.  He worked on the family farm until he moved to Saskatoon in 1973.  Even while living in Saskatoon, he returned to help with spring seeding and harvest in the fall.  He regularly attended the Holy Resurrection and St. Vincent Orthodox churches in Saskatoon.

Predeceased by his parents, Roman and Lena Berezniuk, he is survived by a brother, Dennis of Stenen and two sisters, Iris Kern of Calgary and Cathy (Gerald) Luciuk of Regina.

GULUTZAN:  Funeral service for Walter “Loddie” Gulutzan, 75, of Mamornitz district, who died July 31 at Canora Hospital, was held Aug. 4 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Mamornitz, with Rev. Mel Slashinski officiating.  Burial was in the parish cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born on the family farm in the Mamornitz district on Sept. 17, 1929, to Mandry and Mary (Kushneruik) Gulutzan, he attended Woodhurst School.  He worked on the family

Farm his entire life.  He farmed in the Buchanan area with his brothers, Joe, Paul and Mike, and in the Canora area with his brother, Charlie.

Predeceased by his parents, Mandry and Mary, eight brothers and six sisters, he is survived by a brother, Stephen of Yorkton and a sister, Sophie Parnetta of Tillsonburg, Ont.

SAVENKOFF:  Funeral service for William Savenkoff, 88, of Canora, who died July 30 at Yorkton Regional Health Centre, was held Aug. 5 at Leson’s Funeral Home with members of the Canora Doukhobor Society officiating.  Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born on Nov. 15, 1916, in the Kamsack district to Nicoli and Ellen Savenkoff, he attended school in the Kamsack district.  On Dec. 1, 1942, he married Florence Chutskoff in Veregin.  They moved to Mikado in 1956, to Veregin in 1978 and to Canora in 1992.  He was a member of the UGG and Co-op.

Predeceased by his parents, Nicoli and Ellen, his wife, Florence, a grandson, Samuel Bugera, a brother, John, and two sisters, Helen and Mary Savenkoff, he is survived by a son, William (Kathi) of Elkford, B.C., three daughters, Luba (Samuel) Bugera of Canora, June Bugera of Canora and Marilyn (Mac) McKinley of Poland, Maine; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

CRANE:  Funeral service for Gwendolyn Lucy Crane, 74, of The Key First Nation, who died Aug. 10, was held Aug. 13 at The Key First Nation.

Going by her maiden name, Gwen O’Soup was the first female chief in Saskatchewan when she was elected in 1954 at the The Key First Nation.  She was only 24 years of age.  She was also the first elected female chief in Canada which was affirmed at a recent Federation of Saskatchewan Indian nations (FSIN) chief’s assembly in Swift Current.  She was honoured at the assembly for her lifetime achievements.

Born on Aug. 12, 1930, on The Key First Nation, she married Clifford Crane following his service during the Second World War.  Elected chief for a two-year term in 1954, she remained politically active throughout her life.  She served as a band councillor from 1982 to 1984 and sat on numerous committees at the band level as well as with the Yorkton Tribal Council and FSIN.

“Her voice always resonated with reason, justice and authority,” according to her son, Dennis.

Throughout her life, she maintained that hard work and education would secure equality for First Nations people, he said.

She was an active member of the Anglican Church of Canada.

She was raising her 15-year-old great-grandson, Devan O’Soup, until she suffered a stroke only weeks ago.  An avid supporter of her great-grandson’s sports activities, she often drove him to the hockey rink for early morning practices and to games.

During the last few years she worked hard to convince the province and federal government to recognize as a historical monument, the old St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, which was built on the reserve in 1885.

Crane is survived by four sons, Terry of Arcola, Dennis of Yellowknife, Trent of Port Coquitlam and Cliff of Yorkton; five daughters, Garda of Edmonton, Gilda of Thunder Bay, Brenda of Montreal, Joy of London, Ont., and Karen of Tuktoyaktuk; a brother, Raymond Brass of Mikado; two sisters, Frances Crowfoot of Siksika First Nation and Geraldine Warman of Edmonton; 26 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

CHOBOTER:  Funeral service for Evelyn Helen Choboter, 62, of Hope, B.C., and formerly of Buchanan area, who died July 21 at Fraser Canyon Hospital in Hope, was held July 25 at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church in Hope with Rev. L. MacLennan officiating.  Burial was in the Oddfellows Cemetery in Chillwack with Mountainside Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.

Born on Aug. 8, 1942, in Canora to Mike and Olive Dziaduck of Tiny, she graduated from high school in Canora in 1960.  She attended Saskatoon Business College where she earned an office assistant certificate.  She married Barry Choboter on Nov. 16, 1961.  They lived in various cities in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta before settling in Hope in 1977.  She worked as a teller for the Hope branch of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce for many year.

Predeceased by her husband, Barry, and her father, Mike, she is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline Abremski of Vancouver and Shelly Smith of Kelowna; her mother, Olive Dziaduck; a sister, Eleanor (Orest) Hadubiak; a brother, Julius (Helen) Dziaduck; and three grandchildren.

STEVENS:  Funeral service for Frances Stevens, 79, of Biggar, and formerly of Canora, who died Aug. 1 at Biggar Union Hospital, was held Aug. 6 at Leson’s Funeral Home with Rev. Octavian Mahler officiating.  Burial was in the SS.. Peter and Paul Roman Orthodox Church Cemetery near Canora with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born on Sept. 23, 1925, in Canora to Alex and Marie (Olynyk) Gulutzan, she attended school in Canora.  At a young age, she moved to Toronto and married Albert Stevens on Aug. 20, 1982 in Peterborough.  She worked at the Toronto-Dominion Bank for about 20 years.  They retired to Canora.  Her husband died in 1993 and a few years later, she moved to Biggar where she resided with Dan Kisser.

Predeceased by her parents, Alex and Marie, her husband, Albert, two brothers, Mike and George, and five sisters, Vera, Katherine, Alexandra, Joyce and Jean, she is survived by a son, Wes Wood (address unknown), two daughters, Cyndi (Bob) of Dryden, Ont., and Cheryl Gregg of Saskatoon; three sisters, Eileen Danchilla of Yorkton, Doris Balfour of Vancouver and Sylvia (Fred) Hinks (address unknown); and one grandchild.

PLAXIN:  A memorial service for Reginald Plaxin, 64, of Melfort, who died July 25, was held July 28 at Saskatoon Funeral Home with Maurice Postnikoff officiating.  Saskatoon Funeral Home was in care of arrangements.  Born on Sept. 24, 1940, in Canora to John and Helen Plaxin, he obtained a bachelor of education degree from the University of Saskatchewan.  He taught high school chemistry in Melfort of 27 years.  Predeceased by his parents, John and Helen, he is survived by his wife, Cathy; a son, Kevin (Ann) of Clifton, Va.; a daughter, Karen (Tim) Pentland of Edmonton; a brother, Dan of Saskatoon; and a granddaughter.
