Canora Courier February 23, 2005 Page B1 – In memory of: Lena Davis who was born on October 10, 1907 and who returned to spirit on February 23, 2004 at 96 years of age. We, the Davis family, extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to our relatives, neighbours, and friends for their loving support in the loss of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Lena Davis. A thank you to Rev. Miles Russell for his comforting and meaningful words at our home, at the prayer service, and at the funeral service. Thanks to Leson’s Funeral Home for their professional services and to the honourary and active pallbearers. A thank you to those who participated in either the prayer service or in the funeral service. A thank you to Grace United Church Women for catering a lovely lunch after the funeral. Our most sincere gratitude to those who visited, who phoned, who brought food, who attended the services celebrating mother’s life, and who sent cards, messages of sympathy, letters of tribute, flowers and memorial donations. Thanks to Dr. A. Robinson and his colleagues at the Canora Medical Clinic and to the staff at the Canora Hospital while mother was in acute care, long-term care, and palliative care. Again, thanks to all who showed their love, compassion, and kindness and shared their expressions of sympathy in so many different ways. Canora Courier February 23, 2005 Page B6 – Kuroki Personal items At home with their mother and to attend their father’s (Mike Wasyluk) memorial service were Ron Wasyluk and Linda Sill of Whitehorse, Larry Wasyluk from northern Saskatchewan (where he’s working), and Paula of Yorkton and Faye. Other family members and close friends came from a distance. Mike Daviduk made candleholder for the Drop-In and lit the candle for the afternoon. This was done in remembrance of Mike Wasyluk, who passed away Feb. 1. Before lunch, a moment of silence was observed in Mike’s memory. He is survived by his wife Anne and family.
Canora Courier February 23, 2005 Page B7 – Personal items of interest to Stenen and district readers On Sunday morning, Feb. 20, Harry and Audrey Krotenko received word from Ivy Krotenko of Yorkton of the sudden death of her husband Louis at 2:45 that morning. Louis and Harry are brothers who were raised on the Krotenko family farm one-half mile south of Stenen. Louis and Ivy operated a farm three miles south of Stenen for many years before retiring to Yorkton. That afternoon Harry and Audrey travelled to Yorkton to be with Ivy and other family members. The funeral is tentatively set for Friday.
Canora Courier February 23, 2005 Page B8 STEFANYSHYN: Funeral service for Walter Stefanyshyn, 76, of Preeceville, and formerly of Lintlaw, who died Feb. 10 at Preeceville Hospital, was held Feb. 15 at Trinity United Church in Preeceville with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. Burial was in the Preeceville Orthodox Cemetery with Preeceville Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Aug. 23, 1928, south of Preeceville to Peter and Ksena (Baron) Stefanyshyn, he attended Halycry and Lone Spruce schools. He and his brothers formed a band which played at many weddings and dances. He worked for a number of area farmers and moved to Vernon, B.C., where he worked in a cannery. He returned to farm with his brother for a while and then moved to Winnipeg where he worked for Rayovac Batteries. He then moved to Quesnel, B.C., where he worked for a logging company. In 1968, he opened his own business with Gulf Canada in Lintlaw. He married Sonia Hanchar on Aug. 21, 1976, at St. Andrew’s United Church in Yorkton. He worked out of Kelvington for a few years before he retired in 1982. He lived in Lintlaw until 2002, when he moved to Preeceville. Predeceased by his parents, Peter and Ksena, he is survived by his wife, Sonia; three brothers, Michael (Emily) of Winnipeg, Bill (Vicky) of Hazel Dell ans John of Yorkton; and a sister, Stella of Preeceville.
Canora Courier February 23, 2005 Page B8 SOMMERVILLE: Funeral service for Robert Sommerville, 82, of Sturgis, who died Feb. 10 at Preeceville Hospital, was held Feb. 15 at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Andrew Sowa officiating. Burial was in the Sturgis Roman Catholic Cemetery with Preeceville Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Mar. 6, 1922, in Powasson, Ont., to Robert and Janet Sommerville, he was a grain buyer for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool from 1956 until he retired in 1983. His first marriage was to Phyllis Foster and his second marriage was to Ruth Frederick. He spent his retirement years between Sturgis, Orillia, Ont., Salmon Arm, B.C., Ymir, B.C., and Crystal Lake. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis, his second wife, Ruth, and one grandchild, he is survived by three sons, Philip (Jennifer) of Salmon Arm, Randy (Debbie) of Sturgis and Jim (Gaylene) of Sturgis; two daughters, Heather (Lorne) Godlien of Sturgis and Maureen (John) Phillips of Ymir; a brother, Gavin (Marg) of Powasson, Ont.; five sisters, Peg (Albert) Atkinson of Texada Island, B.C., Jan Cooper of Newmarket, Ont., Isabelle (Duncan) Murray of Invermere, B.C., Jean (Ted) Hillock of Cookstown, Ont., and Grace (Norm) Anatil of Abbotsford, B.C.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Canora Courier February 23, 2005 Page B8 LUKAN: Funeral service for May Lukan, 68, of Liberty Lake, Wash., and formerly of Hyas, who died Jan. 21, was held Jan. 26 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Otis Orchards, Wash., with Rev. Jim Mangan officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery with Hazan and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home of Spokane Valley, Wash., in care of arrangements. Born Dec. 4, 1936 in the Hyas district to Joseph and Anna Lozinski, she attended Westerlund School before graduating from Sacred Heart Academy in Yorkton in 1955. She received a bachelor of science degree in home economics in 1959 then, after an internship in University Hospital in Saskatoon, she worked as the dietician at the Tisdale hospital. In 1960, she accepted the job as a therapeutic dietician at the University of Saskatchewan. She worked at Canora Union Hospital in 1961 and 1962, then taught home economics and science for 17 years in Boron, Calif., retiring in 1991. She was the sacristan co-ordinator of St. Joseph’s church. On Sept. 15, 1962, she married Duane Lukan at St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church in Norquay. Predeceased by her father in 1968, and a sister, Sister Celestine in 1996, she is survived by her husband; her mother of Saskatoon; two sons, Mark of Malibu, Calif., and Joseph of Oakland, Calif.; one daughter, Colleen (Brian) Fetz of Spokane, Stanley (Barbara) of St. Albert, Alta., and Alphonse (Mary) of Saskatoon; one sister, Theresa Beyko of Sandy Bay, and two grandchildren.
Canora Courier February 23, 2005 Page B8 VOIKIN: Funeral service for Nellie Voikin, 88, of Veregin, who died Feb. 13 at Kamsack Hospital, was held Feb. 17 at the chapel of Andrychuk Funeral Home with Pastor Stephen Ruten officiating. Burial was in the Veregin Cemetery with E. Andrychuk Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born Nov. 26, 1916 in the St. Philips district to John and Mary Bobick, she attended Lilyvale School and was a homemaker and dietary aid. She was a member of the Veregin New Horizons Centre and the Kamsack and District Horticultural Society. On Oct. 10, 1936, she married Nick Voikin in Kamsack. Predeceased by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Trudy, a brother, Mike, and a sister, Ann, she is survived by one daughter, Evelyn (Peter) Verigin of Veregin; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Canora Courier February 23, 2005 Page B8 TABIN: Funeral service for Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Tabin, 65, of Thompson, and formerly of the Rama district, who died Jan. 29 in Thompson, was held Feb. 2 in Thompson with Pastor Lee Pickett officiating. Burial was in Thompson with Boardman Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Dec. 12, 1939, in Wadena to Henry and Annie (Milatz) Larson, she grew up in Kuroki and on a farm west of Invermay. She attended Oliver School and, when the family moved to Invermay, she attended Invermay School. In 1962, she married John Tabin of Rama and they moved to Snow Lake in 1964. In 1998, when her husband retired, they moved to Thompson. Predeceased by her father, Henry, and her husband, John, she is survived by a son, Michael of Thompson; a daughter, Marianne (David) Smith of Thompson; her mother, Annie Larson of Wadena; a sister Linda (Bob) Wilson of Invermay; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Canora Courier February 23, 2005 Page B8 DAVIS: No formal funeral service was held for Hugh McIntosh Davis, 82, of Edmonton, and formerly of Canora, who died Feb. 20 in Edmonton. In care of arrangements was Park Memorial Funeral Home of Edmonton. Born on Oct. 6, 1922, in Canora, he joined the armed forces in 1942 and was discharged in 1946. He lived in Canora, Flin Flon, Saskatoon, Fort McMurray and Edmonton. He was a 35-year member of the Operating Engineer’s Union. He is survived by his wife, Olga; three sons, Tom (Judi) of Calgary, Bob (Bev) of Flin Flon and Grant (Bonnie) of Red Deer; two daughters, Sheila (Arnie) Harkiss of Spruce Grove and Shauna Robertson of Edmonton; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Canora Courier February 23, 2005 Page B8 YAWORSKI: Funeral service for Olga Yaworski, 87, of Regina, and formerly of Rama, who died Feb. 6 in Regina, was held Feb. 10 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Regina with Lee Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born in 1919 to Stephan and Mary Hachkevich, she was a teacher for most of her life. From August of 1953 to June of 1966, she taught in Rama. For many years she taught in the Regina separate school system and pioneered work in special education. Predeceased by her parents, Stephan and Mary, her husband, Louis, two sisters, Irene Hermanson and Helen Culp, and a brother, Bernard, she is survived by two sons, Fr. Roger Yaworski and Robert (Jan) Yaworski, and two grandchildren. |
