POPOWICH:  Funeral service for Minnie Popowich, 84, of Yorkton, and formerly of the Buchanan area, who died July 3 at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home, was held July 7 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Church in Yorkton with Rev. Methodius Kushko officiating.  Burial was in the Garden of Gethsemane at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Bailey’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born on June 8, 1921, in the Buchanan district to John and Mary (Bauble) Furman, she married William Popowich in 1940.  She was employed by the Yorkton Union Hospital from 1960 to 1981 in the dietary department.

Predeceased by her parents, John and Mary Furman, her husband, Bill, a sister, Olga Popowich, and a grandson, Barry Sterling, she is survived by a son, Elmer (Shirley) of Good Spirit Acres; a daughter, Adeline (Gerry) Sterling of Cranbrook, B.C.; a brother, Larry (Mary) Furman of Yorkton; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

OKRAINETZ:  Funeral service for Peter Okrainetz, 80, of Devon, Alta., and formerly of Sturgis, who died July 12, was held July 14 at Victory Lutheran Church in Devon.

Born on July 10, 1925, to John and Mary Okrainetz in the Woodlight district, he married Marie Hovey of Endeavour on Oct. 2, 1953.  He opened the Trim Rite Barber Shop in Sturgis in 1960, and later moved the business to his farm.  In 1971, he moved to Edmonton.

Predeceased by his parents, John and Mary, three brothers, Leo, Benny and Harry, and three sisters, Mary, Victoria and Eva, he is survived by his wife, Marie; two sons, Eldon (Denise) and Kevin (Cyndi), both of Edmonton; a daughter, Brenda (Desmond) of Edmonton; seven brothers, Bob (Gerry) of Surrey, Sandy of Nanaimo, Fred of Prince George, Eddie (Rose) of Langley, Ererson (Sharon) of White Rock, Andrew of New Westminster and Eric of Kindersley; four sisters, Sylvia (Tom) Smith of Waterloo, Ont., Lena Hearn of Thunder Bay, Lillian Strocen of Canora and Rose Green of Thunder Bay; and five grandchildren.

BECKING:  Funeral service for Doug Becking, 59, of Canora, who died July 19 in Kamsack, was held July 23 at Leson’s Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Maunala and Vicar David Godkin officiating.  Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born on July 16, 1946, in Runnymede to David and Irene (Burback) Becking, he attended Runnymede School.  At the age of 16, he left home to work with the CNR on the Churchill line.  He worked with the Department of Highways in Kamsack, Yorkton and Churchbridge.  He also worked at a potash mine in Rocanville, an aluminum factory in Calgary and Federal and Pool elevators in Runnymede.  In Canora, he worked for Wyonzek Construction, Melvin’s Paints and Kyba Plumbing and Heating and was employed by the town from 1978 to 2002.  When he retired from the town, he put his efforts into offering a service cutting and trimming trees, which soon developed into a thriving business.  He married Dianna Heshka in Yorkton on Jan. 15, 1972.  He was an avid sportsman, involved with hunting, fishing and snowmobiling.  One of his special interests was raising dogs.  He enjoyed music, played the harmonica and sang in the church choir.

Predeceased by his father, David, a brother, Kelly, and his grandparents, Jacob and Mary Burback and Conrad and Barbara Becking, he is survived by his wife, Dianne; a son, Craig (Tracy) of Winnipeg, his mother, Irene of Yorkton; a brother, Orville (Janice) of Snow Lake; four sisters, Darlene (Sam) Boychuk of Maple Creek, Sharlotte (Ivan) Saley of Saskatoon, Sherry (Trevor) McCuaig of Bengough and Kathy (Don) Starchuk of Churchbridge, and two grandchildren.
