Canora Courier, September 28, 2005 Page 7 Drugs, alcohol blamed for youth’s death On Sept. 20, which was to have been the 13th birthday of a Cote First Nation boy, who died two weeks ago following a gunshot wound, hundreds of persons participated in events held in the Kamsack district to focus on the danger of drug and alcohol abuse. Drugs and alcohol use are being blamed for contribution to the death of James Severight, who died Sept. 11, just nine days before his 13th birthday. Students and staff f Chief Gabriel Cote Education Complex, where Severight had been a student, were joined by students of Kamsack Comprehensive Institute for a walk through Kamsack Tuesday morning of last week. Many of the students carried signs and placards denouncing drug and alcohol abuse. The students were joined by James’ parents, Reg and Sharon Severight, other members of the family, and by Chief Norman Whitehawk and members of the Cote bank council. Organizers of the march said that plans were for this to have been the first of an anticipated annual march against drugs and alcohol in memory of Severight. After the march through Kamsack, the Cote students were taken by bus back to their school and they were to walk along highway No. 8 from the school to the Cote Band Hall for a rally focusing on drugs and alcohol. Students of Keeseekoose Chiefs Education Centre were to walk from their school along the highway to the Cote hall to participate in the rally. Funeral service for James Paul Benjamen Severight, 12, was held Sept. 14 at Cote Band Hall with Elder Francis Bird officiating. Burial was on Cote First Nation with E. Andrychuk Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Kamsack RCMP were called to Cote First Nation Sunday shortly before 7 a.m. on Sept. 11 to investigate a disturbance involving a male with a gun, according to a release from Cpl. Brian Jones, RCMP media relations officer. While police were investigating the complaint, they were called by emergency medical services personnel, who were at a Cote residence attending to a victim of a gun shot. The initial investigation has determined that the deceased had been shot at the residence, and died a short time later at Kamsack Hospital, the release said. A 16-year-old male was taken into custody in connection with the investigation, and in Provincial Court in Kamsack Sept. 12, he was charged with manslaughter. The deceased and the accused are both residents of Cote First Nation, the release said. Kamsack RCMP were assisted in the investigation by Regina RCMP Major Crimes Unite and Yorkton RCMP forensic identification unit. Born Sept. 20, 1992 in Regina, James Severight had attended Chief Gabriel Cote Education Complex. He was involved with minor hockey, and was a horse trainer, traditional singer and traditional hunter. Canora Courier, September 28, 2005 Page B1 – In memory of: Gus (Gussie) WOLOS In memory of a beloved son, brother and uncle who was tragically taken from us October 2, 2004 One year ago, that night in Bulgaria you took your last breath. So far away from home, we weren’t there with you, there were no goodbyes; just the many endless days spent painfully waiting for you to come home to us. When we got that devastating call our hearts split in two. One side filled with treasured memories, the other died with you. Our hearts are filled with the sorrow we share, When the family meets and you’re not there. When we have joys we yearn to share; we try to laugh, smile and play our part. Behind it all lies our broken hearts. Remembering you is a constant fact, we do it every day, but missing you is a deep heartache that just never goes away. In our hearts you will always remain. Somehow life is going on without you. It just will never be the same. No amount of tears can bring us all together. But with the love that’s in our hearts. You will walk with us forever. Unseen, unheard, you’re always near; So loved, oh so sadly missed and so very dear. Gus, your spirit will live in our hearts and in the hearts of all whose lives you touched, forever. --Love mom Eleanor, brother Kevin (Lesley), sisters Irene (Lorne) Boychuk, Leona (James) Lofthang, Lori (Deryck) Shewchuk, nephews Jamie and Austin, nieces Lisa, Amber, Jayna and Mya. Canora Courier, September 28, 2005 Page B1 – In memory of: DANYLUK: In loving memory of our mother and Baba, Emily, who passed away Sept. 28, 1996. If flowers grow in Heaven, Lord, Please pick a bunch for us; Place them in my mom’s arms, And tell her we love her and miss her, And as she turns to smile; Place a kiss upon her cheek, And hold her for awhile. Because remembering is easy, We do it everyday; But there is an ache in our hearts, That will never go away. Mom, when you left us, You took a piece of us with you. -Sadly missed and always remembered by Debbie, Leonard, Nolan, Ryan, Brett, Richard, Chris and Jacob.
