Canora Courier, August 31, 2005 Page 2 SUSHELNITSKI: Funeral service for Dora Sushelnitski, 83, of Benito, and formerly of Buchanan, who died Aug. 3, was held Aug. 8 at Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Swan River with Rev. Patrick Powalinsky officiating. Burial was in the Kobzar District Cemetery near Arran. Born on Aug. 5, 1921, in Buchanan to John and Mary Terlesky, she married Nick Sushelnitski on Nov. 10, 1945, in Canora. They moved to the Kobzar district in 1948 where they farmed. She was the secretary-treasurer of the Kobzar Ukrainian Orthodox Church for many years. In 1988, she moved to Benito after her farm home was destroyed by fire. In May, 2005, she moved to the Thunder Hill Court in Benito. She was a member of the Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Swan River. Predeceased by her husband, Nick, a daughter, Dianne, her parents, John and Mary Terlesky, two sisters, Nettie Dutchak and Rose Nystoruk and two brothers, Peter and John, she is survived by four sons, David (Liana) of Benito, Larry (Debbie) of Iron Springs, Roger (Chris of Picture Butte, Alta., and Raymond (Raylene) of Turin, Alta.; four daughters, Sally (Ed) Yunick of Benito, Annette (Bryan) Bordeleau of Kamloops, Judy (Lloyd) Rose of Peace River and Linda (Brian) McCullough of Durban, Man.; two sisters, Kay Skoretz of Kelowna and Vicky McGregor of Prince George; 17 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren. Funeral service was held from Narfason’s Funeral Chapel on Monday, Aug. 22 with interment in the Invermay Cemetery. Lunch was served at the Invermay Health Centre, where he had been a resident. He is survived by Mildred, his wife of almost 68 years, son, Brian of Medicine Hat and daughter, Donna of Montreal. She was cremated and the family gathers at the cemetery for a committal service on Sunday, Aug. 28. She was predeceased by her sons, randy and Roger. Canora Courier, August 31, 2005 Page B6 KOLOT: Funeral service for Peggy Kolot, 83, of the Canora Gateway Lodge, and formerly of Sturgis, who died Aug. 18 at the Lodge, was held Aug. 23 at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Sturgis with Reverends Patrick Powalinsky, Eugene Maximiuk and Evan Maximiuk officiating. Burial was in the Sturgis Community Cemetery with Preeceville Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Feb. 8, 1922, in Chernova, Western Ukraine, to Anna and John Horhut, she attended Tara Shevchenko School in Chernova. When she immigrated to Canada in 1939, she worked at Utopia Café in Regina. She married the owner, Nick Kolot, on Oct. 16, 1939, and they moved to Toronto, where she worked for a furrier. They returned to Saskatchewan in 1943 to open a restaurant in Sturgis. After almost 32 years in business, they retired in 1974. She belonged to the Ukrainian Women’s Association, serving as president for 20 years. She was a founding member of the Ukrainian Orthodox church in Sturgis. Predeceased by her parents, John and Anna, her husband, Nick, two sisters, one in infancy and Ann; two brothers, Michael and John and her stepmother, Polly, she is survived by three sons, John of Prince Albert, Roy of Sturgis and David of Iqaluit; fives sisters, Marry of Mission, B.C., Pauline of Sturgis, Katy of Canora, Elsie of Sturgis and Lena of Rockford; and two grandchildren. Canora Courier, August 31, 2005 Page B6 TKACHUK: Funeral service for Ethel Tkachuk, 72, of Hudson Bay, and formerly of the Rama district, who died July 16, was held July 21 at the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hudson Bay with Rev. Jeffrey Stephaniuk officiating. Burial was at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Bailey’s Funeral Home of Yorkton in care of arrangements. Born Apr. 27, 1933 in the Rama district to Peter and Pauline (Hrynchyshyn) Romaniuk, she attended Halycry School. On Oct. 23, 1948, she married Ted Tkachuk and the couple farmed until 1954 when they moved to Hudson Bay where she worked as a waitress and cook at several restaurants. Predeceased by two sons, Danny and Ronnie, her parents, two sisters, Delores Kachowski and Janet Rempel, and one brother, Joseph, she is survived by her husband; six sisters, Elsie (Al) Wiwchar of Rexdale, Ont., Marcia Tkachuk of Yorkton, Gertrude (Archie) Chambers of Winnipeg Beach, Man., Grace (Cy) Garland of Mississauga, Iris (Karl) Bretchneider of Bramalea, Ont., and Vivian (Gordon) McKee of Dryden, Ont., and one brother, John (Joan) Romaniuk of Kelowna. Her cremated remains are to be buried in Sturgis at a later date with Victoria Avenue Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Canora Courier, August 31, 2005 Page B6 HENDERSON: Funeral service for Hidur Henderson, 68, of Pelly, who died Aug. 17 at Regina General Hospital, was held Aug. 23 at the Pelly Cmmunity Hall with Rev. Marg Janick-Grayston officiating. Burial was at Yorkton Memorial Cemetery with E. Andrychuk Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born Mar. 21, 1927 in Canora to Eric and Elizabeth Lindgren, she attended school in Sturgis. After working briefly at a bank and with SaskTel, she entered the field of education and taught at Lister School, Pelly, St. Philips and Togo. She was involved with the Pelly Lions, the Link to Health exercise class, the United church board and library board. On Sept. 16, 1960, she married Jack Henderson at St. Andrew’s United Church in Yorkton. Predeceased by her parents and one sister, Freda Klein, she is survived by her husband; three daughters, Lori (Rob Endman) of Saskatoon, Jan (Randy Wittal) of Strasbourg and Jill (Troy) Grainger of Westlock, Alta.; two brothers, Allan of Regina and Eric (Florence) of Winnipeg; two sisters, Olga Robinson of Norquay and May (Dick) Bridgewater of Regina, and three grandchildren. Canora Courier, August 31, 2005 Page B6 CHABAN: Funeral service for Pauline (Pat) Chaban, 89, of Yorkton, and formerly of Canora, who died July 23, was held July 26 at First Baptist Church in Yorkton with Pastor Steve Rosluk officiating. Burial was at St. Mary’s Orthodox Cemetery in Meacham with Christie-Hill Funeral Chapel and Crematorium of Yorkton in care of arrangements. Born June 25, 1916 in the Tway area to Sam and Susan Borsa, she moved with her family to Krydor then to Meacham. After taking a beauty culture course in Saskatoon, she moved to Canora to work as a hairdresser. She married Nick Chaban on June 30, 1940. The family moved to Yorkton in 1960, and in 1977, the couple retired to Watrous. After her husband’s death, she returned to Meacham, then in 1998, she moved to Yorkton. Predeceased by her husband in 1980, her parents, three sisters, Martha Nowosad, Mary Tokarchuk and Susan Tokarchuk, and one brother, Sam Borsa, she is survived by one son, Ed of Yorkton, and two grandchildren. Canora Courier, August 31, 2005 Page B6 HASKEWICH: Funeral service for Ignace Adam Haskewich, 90, of Canora, who died Aug. 22 at Canora Hospital, was held Aug. 26 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Canora with Rev. Basil Chomos officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with E. Andrychuk Funeral Home of Kamsack in care of arrangements. Born Feb. 19, 1915 in the Canora district to Gregory and Susan (Sleeva) Haskewich, he attended Dunay School. He farmed and operated a dairy, then moved to Canora in 1975. He was a trustee of Dunay School, a member of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool committee and a member of the board of directors of the Mutual Feed Lot, Canora Gateway Lodge and Canora Credit Union. He was active in the CCF movement. On Dec. 3, 1943, he married Ina Bazuik. Predeceased by his wife in 1986, his father in 1950, his mother in 1976, two brothers, Louis in infancy in 1911 and Michael in 1945, and one sister, Annie Pasloski in 1977, he is survived by one son, Greg of Saskatoon; two daughters, Darlene (Vince) Pawlik of Yorkton and Marlene (John Graham) Kosheluk of Schreiber, Ont.; one sister, Angus Sandelli of Port Coalburn, Ont.; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Canora Courier, August 31, 2005 BUGERA: Funeral service for Philip James Bugera, 83, of Canora, who died Aug. 21 at the Canora Gateway Lodge, was held Aug. 25 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Canora with Rev. Basil Chomos officiating. Burial was in the Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on May 1, 1922, to Mike and Angela (Matsalla) Bugera in the Tiny district, he attended Kowalowka School. Starting at an early age, he farmed all his life. He married Lena Brezinski on June 6, 1950. Predeceased by his parents, Mike and Angela, a sister, Lucy (Michael) Sabeski and his grandparents, Michael and Frances Matsalla and John and Agnes Bugera, he is survived by his wife, Lena; two sons, James and Curtis, both of Canora; three daughters, Evangeline Bugera (Thomas Ranks) of Saskatoon, Bernadette (Mayrand) Spilchen of Saskatoon and Cynthia (Garry) Landstad of Yorkton; a brother, Joe (Gloria) of Canora; a sister, Anne (Joe) Belitski of Toronto; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Canora Courier, August 31, 2005 HRYWKIW: Funeral service for Eileen Hrywkiw, 72, of Canora, who died Aug. 25 at Pasqua Hospital in Regina, was held Aug. 29 at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canora with Rev. Joakim Rac officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Andrychuk Funeral Home of Kamsack in care of arrangements. Born on Jan. 1, 1933, in the Canora district to Pete and Annie (Murashka) Zayshley, she attended Gogal School. She worked at the Canora Saan Store for more than 20 years. She married Edward Hrywkiw in Tadmore on Oct. 25, 1952. She was a member of the SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church and UCWL. Predeceased by her parents, Pete and Annie Zayshley, and her husband, Edward, she is survived by two sons, Ken (Julie) of Redwater, Alta., and Bernie (Deb) of Red Deer, Alta.; a brother, Albin (Elsie) Zayshley of Yorkton, and two grandchildren. Canora Courier, August 31, 2005 NORDIN: Philip Nordin, one of the founding members of the Department of Biochemistry at Kansas State University, died August 22, 2005, at the Stoneybrook Retirement Community in Manhattan, at the age of 83. He was born March 21, 1922, in Buchanan, Sask., the son of John Emil and Erika (Forsman) Nordin. He served in the Canadian Air Force during the Second World War as a pilot officer. Dr. Nordin graduated from Buchanan High School in 1940, obtained his bachelor’s in 1949, his master’s in 1950, both from the University of Saskatchewan, and his PhD in biochemistry in 1953 from Iowa State University. In 1954, he joined the faculty at Kansas State University. In addition to being one of the founding members of the Department of Biochemistry he had held positions in the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Grain Science and Industry. He taught general courses in biochemistry, and graduate level courses in his specialty, carbohydrate chemistry. In addition to formal classroom teaching, he had served as major professor for 17 graduate students and as a member of supervisory committees for many more graduate students from disciples related to biochemistry. He was an authority in the field of carbohydrate chemistry and published more than 30 research papers dealing with the chemistry and biochemistry of carbohydrates. Dr. Nordin was a member of the First Lutheran Church, American Chemical Society, Kansas Academy of Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Additionally he was a member of Sigma XI, Gamma Sigma Delta, the American Men of Science, and was listed in Who’s Who in the Midwest. Philip is remembered by his family as a gentle, kind person who lived simply, always put others first, and thought the best of everyone. A teacher by vocation, he taught by example in the family, instructing his children in integrity, decency, modesty and honour by how he conducted his own life. He dealt with the trials of this world with quiet good humour and was an unfailing support to his wife and children in times of difficulty. On Aug. 23, 1947, he was married to the former Norma Morganroth. Mrs. Nordin survives of Manhattan. Additional survivors include one son, John Philip Nordin and his wife Debra of Woodinville, WA; and five siblings, Lawrence Nordin of British Columbia, Henry Nordin of Toronto, Laura Bennett of British Columbia, Morris Nordin of Buchanan, and Irene Bekkeering of British Columbia. Dr. Nordin was preceded in death by one son, James Andrew Nordin, and by four siblings, Myrtle Harwood, Adolph, Carl and Howard Nordin. Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church with Rev. Dr. Keith Wiens officiating. Interment followed at Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan. The family of Dr. Nordin received friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
