Preliminary hearing date set for Apr. 6

A preliminary hearing date has been set for Apr. 6 in Canora for Marina Quewezance, 30, of the Kamsack district and Brian Thompson, 41, of the Canora district, who are charged with the second-degree murder of Ed Gorski of Canora.

Both were denied bail and remain in custody.

Gorski’s body was discovered on Oct. 24 at 119 Third Avenue East in Canora, but it is believed that he died on Oct. 22

Funeral for brother of Stenen area resident

Hilary and Rosilda Demucha, who farm north of Stenen, have learned of the death of Rosilda’s brother, Monseigneur Martial LeBlanc, who passed away on Saturday, Dec. 24 in Saskatoon at the age of 78.  The Demuchas were unable to attend the funeral because of treacherous road conditions.  The Vigil Mass for Monseigneur LeBlanc was held Wednesday, Dec. 28 at Candle Lake Community Hall with celebrant, Rev. Janusz Bizewski.  The Funeral Mass was held at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Thursday, Dec. 29, celebrant with the Most Rev. Bishop Blaise Morand officiating.  The choir consisted of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary.  Crossbearer was Martial’s brother Jean LeBlanc and honour guard was comprised of the fourth degree Knights of Columbus.  Interment took place at the Candle Lake Cemetery.

Predeceased by his parents, Romuald and Elida (nee Langlois) LeBlanc, and his Sister Marie Jeanne of Filles de la Providence, he is survived by his brother, Louis LeBlanc and Jean (Simone) LeBlanc; and his sisters, Rosilda (Hillary) Demucha, Helen Tousignant, Priscilla (Maurice) Haudegand, Francoise (Rosaire) Langlois, Madeline (Alex) Mockford, and Adele (Roger) Bertrand.

RUDNITSKI:  Funeral service for William (Bill) Rudnitski, 91, of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home, and formerly of Preeceville, who died Jan. 15 at the nursing home, was held Jan. 19 at the Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church with Rev. Joakim Rac officiating.  Burial was in the Preeceville Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery with Preeceville Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born on Jan. 16, 1915, in the Olesha district to Bartko and Maria Rudnitski, he farmed in his early years with his parents.  He married Pauline Stefanyshyn on Oct. 21, 1940, and they continued to farm until retiring to Preeceville in 1996.

Predeceased by his parents, Bartko and Maria, a son, Raymond, two brothers, Metro and Tom, and two sisters, Ann and Helen, he is survived by his wife, Pauline; and two sons, Russell of Preeceville and Harvey (Dale) of Yorkton.

CURRAH:  A private funeral service for Sid Currah, 80, of Invermay, who died Dec. 15 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, was held Dec. 26 with terry Tompkins in care of arrangements.

Born on Nov. 12, 1925, on a farm west of Invermay to Walter and Elizabeth (White) Currah, he attended school in the area..  He Joined the Canadian Forces during the Second World War and spent 25 years in the service.  On Nov. 20, 1951, he married June Findlay of Invermay.  His service with the armed forces took him and his family twice to Germany, 1962 and 1966 and 1967 to 1970.  He also served in Egypt.  His last posting was in Kamloops, where he retired in 1975.  When he and his family returned to Invermay, they operated a café and he drove a school bus.  He served on the Invermay town council, the history book committee, winter festival committees, minor hockey committees, homecoming committees, the cemetery committee and on the Invermay branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

He is survived by a son, Jim (Dianne) of Ladysmith, B.C.; two daughters, Holly of Abbotsford, B.C., and Loretta (Mike) of Invermay; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

SOOKOCHOFF:  Funeral service for Nick Sookochoff, 91, of the Canora Gateway Lodge, who died Jan. 27 at the lodge, was held Jan. 30 at Leson’s Funeral Home with Pastor Greg Bright officiating.  Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born on Dec. 24, 1914, to Nick and Polly (Veregin) Sookochoff on the family homestead four miles southwest of Buchanan, he attended Woodhurst School.  He married Laura Holoboff on Dec. 3, 1950, in the Veregin district and they farmed until 1975, when they retired to Canora.

Predeceased by his parents, Nick and Polly, a brother, John, and a sister, Mary Brown, he is survived by his wife, Laura; three sons, Lorne (Dawn) of Saskatoon, Miles of Wilkie and Floyd (Caroline) of Saskatoon; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

KOZAK:  Funeral service for Mary Kozak, 84, of the Canora Gateway Lodge, who died Jan. 19 at the lodge, was held Jan. 21 at Leson’s Funeral Home with Pastor Greg Bright officiating.  Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born on Dec. 1, 1921, in the Rama district to Paul and Anna (Hrynkiw) Kozak, she attended school in Canora.  Her family lived in various locations as her father worked for the CNR.  After school, she looked after her parents in Norquay, who were both dealing with poor health.  She worked at the Canora Pharmacy from 1965 to 1985.  She was the president of the Gateway Lodge Resident’s Association.

She was predeceased by her parents, Paul and Anna Kozak, and a sister, Susan Dutchak.
