Canora Courier, April 05, 2006 Page 10 – Items of interest to Stenen and district readers Funeral service for brother-in-law of Stenen resident Peter and Mary Kurkowsky received word of the death of Peter’s brother-in-law, James Alban MacDougall – fondly known as Al or “Mr. Mac: - who died in Scarborough, Ont. on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the age of 85. Al, who was porn in Prince Edward Island on Sept. 15, 1920, was married to Peter’s oldest sister, Mary, who passed away on April. 16, 1979 at the age of 58. On June 1, 1985, Al remarried to start a new chapter in his life with Patricia. Visitation for Al MacDougall was held at Jerrett Funeral Home in Scarborough on Monday, Jan. 9 and on Jan. 10. His funeral service was conducted from the chapel of the funeral home on Jan. 11. MacDougall was no stranger to Stenen and area residents. He loved the prairies – especially Saskatchewan – and visited Stenen often as he thought of this small, rural village as his second home. At one point when work was scarce, he and Mary moved to live with Mary’s mother Wasylyna in Stenen, where they spent time not only with Mary’s mother but with Mary’s brothers, Peter (Mary) Kurkowsky and Paul (Victoria) Kurkowsky of Hyas, her sister Gloria Kurkowsky, her step-sister Vicki Letwinka, and her step-brothers Al, Mike (Mikey), and Boris (Bo) Letwinka. His most recent visit to Stenen and area was in April of 2005 when he came to attend the funeral of his brother-in-law Paul Kurkowsky. Al served with the Royal Canadian Air Force at various points in Canada as well as in Germany for a number of years. He was a passionate mechanic and driver of big rigs, which he continued to do so until the age of 80. These careers allowed him to pursue his love of traveling, both with his family and on his endless solo jaunts across the continent. In addition, he was Bell Telephone’s best customer, which he himself admitted when he confided to his niece saying, “You know Cheryl Anne, this may come as a surprise to you, but I love to talk.” Cheryl Anne Cohoon, the daughter of Peter Kurkowsky’s sister Anne Cohoon, and the late Ken Cohoon, delivered the eulogy at his funeral. Predeceased by his parents, grandparents, first wife Mary, brother-in-law Paul Kurkowsky, step-sister-in-law Vicki Letwinka, and step-brother-in-law Mike Letwinka, he is survived by three sons, Ken MacDougall of Duck Lake, Sask., Gerry (Mary) MacDougall of Oakville, Ont. and Dr. Peter MacDougall and his wife Diane of Saskatoon; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his present wife Pat, her children and families, and her grandchildren. He will be missed by his sister-in-law Gloria (Art) Zubko of Kelowna, his brother-in-law Peter (Mary) Kurkowsky, step-sister-in-law Al (Arlene) Letwinka of Toronto and Boris Letwinka of Regina; and numerous nieces and nephews. Canora Courier, April 05, 2006 Page 10 – Items of interest to Stenen and district readers (Funeral service for Victor Lisoway, who died at Kamsack Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 18, was held at the chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home in Canora on Feb. 21 with Rev. Miles Russell of the Preeceville-Sturgis United Church Pastoral Charge officiating. Kathy Ostafichuk of Hyas was the organist with the Grace United Church choir participating in the singing of “How Great Thou Art”’ “Amazing Grace”, and “the Old Rugged Cross” as well as the recessional “Near to the Heart of God”. Following the funeral service, family and friends gathered at the Family Centre at Leson’s Funeral Home for a time of fellowship over lunch. Interment took place as the Russian-Ukrainian Protestant Cemetery between Hyas and Stenen with nephews Darcy, Daryl, and Derrick Kopelchuk and Dale and Sheldon Lisoway and Gary Lisoway acting as pallbearers. Victor Lisoway was born on the family farm northeast of Stenen, where he continued to farm after the passing of his parents, Anton and Dora (nee Zubko) Lisoway. When his health wouldn’t allow him to be on his own on the family farm, he entered the Kamsack and District Nursing Home, where he resided until his passing. Canora Courier, April 05, 2006 Page 10 – Items of interest to Stenen and district readers Funeral service for Nettie Bobowski, who passed away on Mar. 24 at the age of 76 years, was held at trinity United Church on Mar. 17. It was preceded by an evening prayer service at the chapel of Preeceville Funeral Home on Mar. 16 with Rev. Miles Russell of the Preeceville-Sturgis United Church Pastoral Charge officiating at both services and with Lay Worship Leader Lynn Larsen assisting at the funeral. Leanne Jakubowski of Endeavour was the pianist with the Trinity United Church Choir participating in the singing of hymns “Morning Has Broken “Amazing Grace”, and “Rock of Ages” as well as the recessional “Joy Comes with the Dawn”. Immediately following the funeral service, family and friends gathered in the dining area of the church for a time of fellowship over lunch prepared by the Trinity United Church Women. Interment took place at the Canora Cemetery with nephew Laverne Yagelnesky and friends Orest Kiryluk, Harvey Prokop, Dennis and Victor Wasylenchuk, and George Pantiuk acting as casketbearers. Nettie Bowbowski (nee Yagelnesky) was born in the Hyas area. After marrying James (Jim) Bobowski, they settled on a farm north of the village of Stenen. Later, they retired to Preeceville, where she resided until her passing. A more complete obituary has already been published in The Canora Courier. Canora Courier, April 05, 2006 Page 11 – Items of interest to Invermay district readers Mildred Snowden and Walter Husarewich attended the funeral of Mildred’s brother-in-law, Hugo Olson, age 83, of Quill Lake. The funeral was held at the Quill Lake United Church on Friday, Mar. 31. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, Daughter Karen (Dave) Reddekkop and sons Conrad (Peggy) and Robert (Patricia). Canora Courier, April 05, 2006 Page 12 SURKAN: Funeral service for Stefan Surkan, 87, of Theodore, who died Apr. 1 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, is to be held Apr. 5 at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Transfiguration in Yorkton with Rev. Roman Kocur officiating. Burial is to be in the Theodore Town Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Aug. 18, 1918, in the Theodore district to Peter and Marie (Grumetza) Surkan, he attend Czernowitz School. He and his brother, Ted, took over the family farm after their father retired. He moved to Theodore in 1975, but continued to offer a helping hand at the farm. He was an active member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Mary the Protectress in Theodore and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Transfiguration in Yorkton. He was a member of the Order of St. Andrew, Yorkton chapter. Predeceased by his patents, Peter and Marie, seven brothers, John in infancy, Alex, Tom, Andy, Harry, Martin and Bill, and seven sisters, Cynthia in infancy, Eva Timerowski, Dora Teply, Ann Wolowidnek, Vicky Semchuk, Katie Prokop and Lena Halek, he is survived by two brothers, Ted (Olga) of Theodore and Peter (Arlene) of Stoney Plain. Canora Courier, April 05, 2006 Page B7 BEREZNIUK: Funeral service for Orest “Dennis” Berezniuk, 54, of Sturgis, who died Mar. 27 at Preeceville Hospital, was held Mar. 30 at Leson’s Funeral Home with Rev. Patrick Powalinsky officiating. Burial was in Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Dec. 19, 1951, to Roman and Lena (Anaka) Berezniuk in Canora, he attended George Albert Elementary School in the Stenen district and the Sturgis Composite High School. He completed his training as a machinist at SIAST in Prince Albert and worked at a manufacturing company in Yorkton for a short period. He returned to Stenen and took over operating of the family farm. Predeceased by his parents, Roman and Lena, and a brother, Emil, he is survived by two sisters, Iris Kern of Calgary and Cathy (Gerald) Luciuk of Regina. Canora Courier, April 05, 2006 Page B8 SNIHER: Funeral service for Mary Sniher, 92, of Saskatoon, and formerly of Mikado, who died Feb. 28, was held Mar. 3 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Bryan Bayda officiating. Burial was at Yorkton City Cemetery with Bailey’s Funeral Home in car of arrangements. Born Sept. 8, 1913 in the Insinger district to John and Katrina (Kowalchuk) Panchuk, she attended Fosty School. On Oct. 10. 1937, she married Peter Sniher. The couple moved to Windsor, Ont., for a year, then returned to farm in the Insinger district for eight years. They then moved to Mikado where they purchased a garage business. In 1950, they moved to Yorkton. After her husband’s death, she moved to Saskatoon. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Church and was a longtime member of the women’s league. Predeceased by her parents, her husband, a son, Lorne, a grandson, Gregory, three brothers, Steve, Sylvester and Walter, and three sisters, Pauline, Olga and Eileen, she is survived by one son, Eugene (Shirley) of Calgary; one daughter, Phyllis (John) of Saskatoon; eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Canora Courier, April 05, 2006 Page B8 BUKOSKY: A memorial service for Doris Bukosky, 82, of Canora, who died Mar. 18 at her residence, was held Mar. 24 at Leson’s Funeral Home with Rev. Rod Luciuk officiating. She was cremated with Lesn’s Funeral Home in Care of arrangements. Born on May 1, 1923, to Mike and Rose (Belanchuk) Sushelnitsky on the family farm in the Mohyla district, she attended Mohyla School. She married Evans Bukosky on June 24, 1950, at the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church in Canora. They operated a hardware store in Canora for several years before moving to Manitoba. She had various jobs over the years but her job at Eaton’s in Winnipeg was the longest and it was there that she retired. She sold her home in Winnipeg in 2003 and moved to Canora. Predeceased by her parents, Michael and Rose, her husband, Evans, two brothers, Joey in childhood and another in infancy, and three sisters, Mary Gogol, Pauline Sushelnitsky and Ann Kmet, she is survived by two sons, Robert of Canora and Andrew (Michele) of Visalia, Calif.; a daughter, Lydia of Canora; two brothers, John and Nick Sushelnitsky, both of Canora; two sisters, Victoria Bahnuik and Ethel Strozen, both of Canora; and two grandchildren. Canora Courier, April 05, 2006 Page B8 STRIJACK: Funeral service for Hannah Strijack, 93, of the Preeceville Lions’ Hostel, and formerly of Sturgis, who died Mar. 13 at the hostel, was held Mar. 18 at Grace United Church in Sturgis with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. Burial was in the Sturgis Community Cemetery with Preeceville Funeral Home in Care of Arrangements. Born Apr. 5, 1912, in Buchanan to Sam and Avotia (Shukin) Sookocheff, she attended Buchanan School. Her family moved to Sturgis in 1947. She married Mike Strijack on Apr. 28, 1950, and they farmed in the area. She was a member of the horticultural society. Predeceased by her parents, Sam and Avotia, her husband, Mike, a brother, Sam, and two sisters, Mabel and Mary in infancy, she is survived by a daughter, Barbara Kruger of Duncan, B.C., and three grandchildren. Canora Courier, April 05, 2006 Page B8 OSTAFIE: Funeral service for Lena Ostafie, 72, of Yorkton, and formerly of the Burgis district, who died Feb. 25 at Regina General Hospital, was held Mar. 2 at Westview United Church in Yorkton with Faye L. Greer officiating. Burial was at Yorkton City Cemetery with Bailey’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born Oct. 16, 1933 in the Burgis district to Henry and Helen (nee Gawryluik) Kobylka, she attended East Wexford, Cedric and Bogucz schools. On Oct. 15, 1950, she married Edward Ostafie. She worked at the Gateway Lodge in Canora, then, after moving to Yorkton, she worked at Yorkton Union Hospital until 1981. Predeceased by her mother in 1968, her father in 1986, a sister, Mary Filipchuk in 2000, and a brother, Mike Gawryluik in 2005, she is survived by her husband; one daughter, Sharon (David Atwater) of Yorkton; one son, Ken (Jackie) of Yorkton; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. |
