The storm, accompanied with the strong winds, made it very unsafe. The turbulence was so great that the landing was very rough. The passengers were bussed to the Abbotsford airport. It was quite an ordeal, as the traffic lights were all out. Some 200,000 residents were without power for several days.

And only those who have lost this way can tell, The pain of parting without farewell. More each day we miss you Travis, Some may think the wound is healed. But little do they know the sorrow, That lies withing our hearts concealed. -We miss you and love you always, Mom, Dad, Alecea & Mathew

Canora Courier, December 6, 2006 Page 14 Burkatsky - Mabel Burkatsky of the Canora Gateway Lodge passed away peacefully on November 29th, 2006 at the age of 99 years. Mabel was born on September 21st, 1907 on the family farm in the Tiny District to Timko and Maria (nee Kosiewich) Shabits. Mabel was a great farm lady and as a young girl, she never attended school because she stayed home to help her mother operate the farm and raise the family after the passing of her father at an early age. Mabel continued to help on the farm until her mother remarried Mike Shwets. Mabel then married Mike Burkatsky on February 14th, 1927 in Canora. Together they purchased their own farm beside her family farm. They had a son Bill and continued to farm until Mike passed away in 1951. Mabel and her son Bill relocated to Canora in the early 1970's. They would continually go back and forth from town to the farm until they sold the farm. Mabel raised all kinds of farm animals such as horses, cattle, sheep, ducks, chickens, and pigs. She also grew unbelievable gardens. Mabel was also known for her dinners which were second to none and she was a fabulous hostess. While living in Canora Mabel tended to her son Bill and lived a quiet life. After the passing of her son Bill, Mabel was very generous and she donated to the establishment of the Palliative Care Room at the Canora Hospital in memory of Bill. In 2004, Mabel became a resident of the Canora Gateway Lodge where she resided until her passing. She will be dearly missed by all. Mabel is survived by her two sisters: Nellie Rudnitski and Rose Shabits both of Winnipeg, MB as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Mike; her son Bill; her father Timko; her stepfather Mike Shwets; her mother Maria and her four brothers: Paul, Bill, Steve and Peter Shabits. The Prayer Service was held from the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home, Canora on Friday, December 1st, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy was celebrated from Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Canora on Saturday, December 2nd, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac, celebrant. The interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Dr. Vitalis Azike and Nestor Trach officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery. Active Pallbearers were Lindsay Wolkowski, Dave Henlisia, Les Trach, Blair Ratushniak, Randy Seier and Conrad Grodzinski. The Crossbearer was Jordan Trach. On Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, Carol Ann Wolkowski (nee Seyer) passed away peacefully at the Palliative Care Unit at the Canora Union Hospital surrounded by her husband, Bernard and sons, Colby and Trent, following a long, courageous battle with cancer. Carol was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Mary (nee Kolinsky) Seyer, a sister, Mary Agnes at birth, and inlaws, Paul and Annie (Fullawka) Wolkowski. Carol is survived by her husband, Bernard; sons, Colby (Carmen) and Trent (Tricia Sheptak and her daughters, Chantel, Kayla and Courtney); two special grandsons, Grady and Porter; her Aunt Agnes Beck, Uncle Nick Kolinsky and Aunt Madeline Kolinsky and many cousins and nieces and nephews in the Seyer and Wolkowski families. Carol was born on May 18, 1945 at Melville where she received her elementary and high school education. She attended Business College in Regina and was employed at the Melville Hospital in the X-ray Dept. In 1970 Carol accepted a position in medical records at the Canora Union Hospital and later worked as a receptionist at the front desk. On June 30, 1973, Carol married Bernard Wolkowski at St. Henry's Roman Catholic Church in Melville. A faithful member of St. Joseph Parish, Carol was a 25year member of the CWL, serving as President and various other board positions, a charter member of the Wheatland Lioness Club serving as President and various other positions and she also served as Welcome Wagon Hostess for several years. Her love of family was her greatest asset. Her devotion to Bernard and the farm were a great change for the city girl. Her interest in her son's activities, from their school days, to curling and hockey and their interest in farming and cattle was part of her love she showed to them and later to their mates. Carol was a frequent visitor to Agribition and other cattle shows that they entered. Busy with her crafts and compiling family history, she was a great organizer. Her photo albums were done in order. Carol had an interest in history and especially family histories -- and she organized the first Wolkowski Family Reunion. Her love of gardening and flowers was evident with her daisies and sunflowers, which brightened their yard and their home. Angels were an important part of Carol's life. She had quite a collection -- as well as creating angels through her craft talents which she often gave away. Carol's most precious moments in the last three years were when she spent time playing with her grandsons. It was special to Carol to be able to baby sit with Grady and Porter to play farm, auction sales or cowboys. A special treat was Grandma Carol allowing play dough on the living room coffee tables. Carol also enjoyed Tricia's girls and the time she spent with them. Carol was truly a people's person and this was evident in the many friends that visited her throughout her illness. She will be truly missed by those who knew and loved her. On Saturday, a new star took its place in the heavens -- a bright shiny star that Grady has been able to identify as he looks for Grandma Carol.......May she rest in peace.
