Courier, September 06, 2006 Page 09 – Invermay News Fred Mikkonen, lifetime resident of lnvermay, died on July 22 at the age of 75. Funeral service was held on July 27 in Invermay Community Hall, with interment in Invermay Cemetery. He farmed in the area all his life except for a time when he took a diesel mechanics course in Edmonton. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Gladys and their five children; Kim (Laurel), Rick (Cathy), Sharon, Danny (Dianne) and Lois (Henry) and the grandchildren. Funeral service for Bill Monich, 96, of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home,
and formerly of Canora, who died Aug. 31 at the Yorkton Regional Health
Centre, was held Sept. 4 at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity
in Canora with Rev. Peter Wasylenko officiating. Burial was in the Canora
Cemetery with Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
on Aug. 28, 1910, in the Whitesand District to Alex and Ann (Kunetsky) Monich,
he spent his first few years in the area south of Good Spirit Lake, and then
his family moved to the Poplar Springs School District, west of Burgis. After
a few years, the family moved to the Pretty Valley District, northeast of
Mikado. He attended Poplar Springs School and Pretty Valley School. He
married Stella Trach on Apr. 28, 1939, in Canora. They purchased their own
land north of Mikado. After his wife died, he continued to farm with his son,
David. He moved to Canora in 1975. During
the past eight years, he was a resident of nursing homes in Canora and
Yorkton. He was involved in many organizations, such as: the local
Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Committee, the farmers' union and the local school
board for Pretty Valley School. He was involved in the building of the school,
a teacher's cottage and a barn for the school district. He helped organize the
local rural telephone system. Predeceased
by his parents, Alex and Anna, his wife, Stella, two brothers, John and
George, three sisters, Marie Lyons, Jean Lightfoot and Sadie Hladun, and a
granddaughter, Jennifer Monich, he is survived by two sons, David (Sharon) of
Canora and Norman (Bernice) of Saskatoon; a daughter, Victoria Skibinsky of
Saskatoon; three sisters, Ella Ross, Katherine Hamilton and Victoria
O'Sullivan; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. |
