Rev. Miles Russell reflected on the life of Florence saying, "Florence was born April 14, 1924 and died May 28, 2004. Florence was born northeast of Sturgis to Rose and Andrew Cerniuk, the third of 16 children and grew up on the farm. Florence married Alex Shewchuk Sept. 20, 1945. Their first home was a log house in the Green Leaf area north of Sturgis. Together they saw the birth of four children. The farm was a busy place for Florence, and she often looked after the farm and the family, when Alex was away. Alex worked for CN, and the family moved to Reserve and then to Sturgis in 1959. Florence was a homemaker in Sturgis and worked for Josie and Warren Holmberg at their greenhouse, as well as the soft ice cream place in Sturgis, cooked for the hotel, and did painting and staining of different houses for Mike Wisoley. She cooked for many years for the Sturgis Auction Mart. After Alex's death in 1983, Florence continued to live in Sturgis being active with gardening, hand work, slowpitch, and the United church choir for more than 20 years. She was part of the pattern dancers at the READ. Club, and when the church had family dances in Stenen, she taught the young how to dance. Florence enjoyed bowling, and her family, especially seeing her grandchildren.
