tears could build a stairway, And
memories a lane; I’d
walk right up to heaven, And bring you home again. -Sadly missed, always loved and remembered, Darlene, Chris and family Canora Courier, October 11, 2006 Page 14 HASKEWICH:
Glenn Haskewich, beloved husband of Floreen of Canora, passed away
peacefully at the Canora Hospital on September 28th, 2006 at the age of 63
years. Glenn was born on October 29th, 1942 the youngest child of Loui and
Lena (nee Swiderski) Haskewich in Canora. As a young man, Glenn attended
public school in Norway and high school in Sturgis and Preeceville. Following
his schooling, Glenn continued to help on the family farm while his father and
brothers went to work at lumber camps. In 1963, his father Loui decided to
sell the farm and try a new venture in the billiard business. He purchased the
Canora Lunch and Billiards. Glenn would help and was very happy to do so. In
1970, Glenn's father Loui passed away and he continued to operate the
business. In time the name changed to `Glenn's Billiards' and was known to be
"the sportiest spot in town". Glenn took enormous pride in his pool
tables. He ran large scale tournaments in the spring. Also with two of his
great Fred's, Glenn was able to play music on special occasions and holidays.
Glenn was united in marriage to Floreen
Kurlick on October 9th, 1971.
His other love was music. He learned to play by ear. His father sold some
grain to buy Glenn his first guitar and wondered if it would be worth it.
Shortly after, Glenn was on the road travelling with his musical friends,
Benny Stachiw and Russell Baron, then with the Dutchaks, the Ripa boys and the
Bartko `Senators'. He was very happy to play for weddings, dances, parties and
later at the Keen Age Centre in Canora. Finally one day he became one of the
Country Lads and recorded an album known as `Saskatchewan's Finest Music'
which we hear most every Saturday on GX-94, the `Saturday Night Get Together'.
Glenn also was part of a few other musical endeavours with well known, Boris
Novasad, from Dauphin, MB. But mainly, Glenn kept very busy either recovering
or buying and selling pool tables. Glenn took pride in his work and later in
life enjoyed his work as janitor at the Canora Composite School. Glenn was
very sportsminded and loved to pitch softball playing on various teams from
Sturgis, Buchanan and Stenen. He played broomball in Canora and was their
goalie. He also curled but was truly hockey crazy. He loved to watch the local
hockey teams and even purchased a fancy TV to watch at home. Glenn's favourite
pastime was to drive up town to have coffee with `the boy's' where they would
talk and have fun. He had a love of cars, his home and especially his family. Glenn
is lovingly remembered by his wife Floreen (nee Kurlick); his two sisters:
Isabelle Frank of Wetaskawin, AB and Charlotte Tetlock of Preeceville, SK as
well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents: Louie
and Lena (nee Swiderski) Haskewich and his two brothers: Ed and Lionel
Haskewich. The
Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, October 2nd, 2006 from St. Joseph's
Roman Catholic Church, Canora with Rev. Fr. Antoni Degutis celebrant.
Interment followed in the Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, Burgis,
with Rev. Fr. Peter Wasylenko officiating. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, Burgis or to the Canora Hospital Auxiliary as tokens of remembrance. Arrangements had been entrusted to LESON'S FUNERAL HOME, Canora, SK.
