ZAHARIA:  Funeral service for Mervin Allen Zaharia, 62, of Preeceville, who died Jan. 29 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, was held Feb. 1 at Preeceville Funeral Home with Rev. Patrick Pawalinsky officiating.  Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Preeceville Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Born on Mar. 29, 1943, in Toronto to John and Doris Zaharia, he attended school in Preeceville.  He learned his trade as a welder from his father and from Johnny Holowachuk, his father’s employee.  He took technical training at STI in Moose Jaw.  On Oct. 12, 1968, he married Sonnia Kuzmunski at the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Preeceville and they moved to Thompson, Man., where he worked at the INCO mine until 1971.  They moved to Edmonton where he worked for Fairmont Plating and Keller Construction.  After moving back to Preeceville, he hauled logs for various contractors, including John Palagian and John Borowetz.  In 1978, he became the caretaker of the new recreation centre in Preeceville.  He joined the Millwrights Union in 1980 and got his certification as a millwright.  He worked at power plants in various locations such as Coronach, Nipawin and Prince Albert.  As a professional welder, he took on some jobs that got him noticed, such as welding inside the old water tower in Preeceville.  He continued to work until 1997, when health problems forced him to retire and spend more time at his two favourite pastimes, fishing and hunting.

Predeceased by his parents, John and Doris, he is survived by his wife, Sonnia; a son, Quentin of Crossfield, Alta.; a daughter, Kim of Regina; a brother, John (Judy) of Preeceville; two sisters, Marie (Ron) Grychowski of Rama and Sandy (Ernie) Yarish of Canora; and one grandchild.

RUDYK:  Funeral service for Katie Rudyk, 94, of Saskatoon, and formerly of the Rama area, who died Jan. 16, was held Jan. 21 at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Saskatoon with Andre Lalach and Archdeacon Ray Lalach officiating.  Burial was in the Woodlawn Catholic Cemetery with park Funeral Chapel in car of arrangements.

Born on Aug. 1, 1911, in the Dobrowody area to Harry and Alexandra Brodziak, she married Andrew Rudyk on Feb. 15, 1931.  For the past four years, she lived at St. Joseph’s Home in Saskatoon.

Predeceased by her parents, Harry and Alexandra, her husband, Andrew, and four siblings, she is survived by two sons, Eugene (Carol) and Allan (Annette); four daughters, Mary (Stan) Yaskowich, Pauline Dymtriw, Eugenia Riencke and Marcie (Ray) Lalach; three sisters; 24 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
