Canora Courier, March 15, 2006 Page 1 Mary MacIsaac, former Mikadonian, dies at age 112 She was recognized as one of the world’s oldest persons Mary MacIsaac, a former Mikado teacher, was recognized as one of the oldest persons in the world where she died in Saskatoon on Friday. She was 112 years old, having celebrated her last birthday on Dec. 27. MacIsaac taught in Mikado from 1919 to 1921. Born in 1893 in Bay de Chaleur, N.B., Mary MacNair was in her teens where she completed her teachers’ training at St. Francis Xavier University. Her first teaching job was in Gull Lake and she was 26 years old when she began teaching in Mikado. When she left Mikado, she taught in Wolseley where she met Jack MacIsaac. They were married in Charlottetown, P.E.I. and when they returned to Saskatchewan, they settled in Prince Albert, where she continued to teach. She spent most of her life in Prince Albert, where she raised five children. Canora Courier, March 15, 2006 Page 1 Police release name of accident victim The name of the 33-year-old Buchanan man killed in a two-vehicle accident north of Tiny on Mar. 7 is Brent Pidgurski. Funeral service for Pidgurski was held Mar. 11 at Trinity United Church in Preeceville with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. Burial was in Preeceville Cemetery with Preeceville Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Pidgurski was born on Oct. 25, 1972 in Canora, to Bernard and Kathleen Pidgurski. He attended Buchanan School. He attended university, but decided to follow his dream and return to farming. He liked hunting, reading, music, computer, restoring antique tractors, going to dances, playing card and having fun with his friends. He is survived by his parents, Bernard and Kathleen Pidgurski of Buchanan; a brother Kevin (Nicole) of Regina; and a sister, Katherine of Buchanan. Canora Courier, March 15, 2006 Page 2 KUSHNIR: Funeral service for Wasyl Anton Kushnir, 88, of Yorkton, and formerly of the Hamton area, who died Jan. 27 at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home, was held Feb. 4 at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Gerry Kreba officiating. Burial was in the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Bailey’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on mar. 14, 1917, on the family farm near Hamton to Anton and Marinka (Krepakewich) Kushnir, he attended Oleskow School. He married May Semenuik on Oct. 18, 1936, and they farmed in the Hamton area. In addition to farming, he had a scrap metal business, and he was an auctioneer. When he moved to Yorkton in 1958, he was briefly employed by the Macleod’s store. Even after moving to Yorkton, he maintained a shop on the farm where he did blacksmith work. Predeceased by his parents, Anton and Marinka, two sons, Gerald and Dallas, two brothers, Peter and John, and two sisters, Helen Kachan and Katherine Jason, he is survived by his wife, May; a son, Darrell of Pickering, Ont.; two daughters, Judith Walker of Yorkton and Sharron (Dale) Hudson of Fort Qu’Appelle; a brother, Paul of the Netherlands; two sisters, Anna Kushnir of Wawa, Ont., and Marion (Vernon) Leopply of Duarte, Calif.; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Canora Courier, March 15, 2006 Page 2 ZIPCHIAN: Funeral service for Pauline Zipchian, 65, of Kamsack, and formerly of Preeceville, who died Mar. 2 at Kamsack Hospital, will be held Mar. 10 at Westminster Memorial United Church in Kamsack with rev. Frances Patterson officiating. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery with E. Andrychuk Funeral Home in care of arrangements. She was born in Winnipeg on Nov. 28, 1941, to Robert and Dora Wainwright. The family moved to Saskatchewan and she received her education at Monastyr School in Buchanan and at Preeceville School, where she graduated. She went to Regina to get her teacher’s diploma and took music lessons from Joyce Godfrey of Preeceville, obtaining her Grade 12 in music from the Royal Conservatory in Toronto. She taught school in Cabri, Pelly and Kamsack. In July, 1966, she married Peter Zipchian of Kamsack and the couple lived in the community and farmed. A well-known pianist, who performed at a variety of events, including at the church, she counted among her honours performing for Queen Elizabeth II in 1987 during the royal visit to Kamsack, and the receiving of a medal for the Saskatchewan centennial. Predeceased by her husband, her parents and two brothers, Robert and Billy Wainwright, she is survived by four brothers, Walter of Vancouver, Maurice of Moose Jaw, Richard (Cindy) of Vernon, B.C., and Patrick (Eileen) of Fort Nelson, B.C., and three sisters, Irene (Doug) Petrowitz of Vernon and Sally (Patrick) Peters and her twin, Kathleen (Joe) Poulton, both of Preeceville. Canora Courier, March 15, 2006 Page 2 NEGRYCH: Funeral service for Amelia (Emily) Negrych, 92, of Norquay, who died Mar. 5 at the Norquay Health Centre, was held Mar. 10 at St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church in Norquay with Rev. Antoni Degutis officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Dec. 20, 1913, in the Willowgrove district to Anton and Mary (Zawadowski) Grywacheski, she attended Willowgrove School. She married Joseph Negrych on Oct. 7, 1929. He was a teacher and they lived at various teacherages in the area. In Fort Pelly, where she ran a country store and post office, they built a hose in the 1930s. They moved to Norquay in 1960. After her husband died in 1962, she worked as a clerk at the Macleod’s Hardware Store and the Larson and Anderson Hardware Store. She retired at age 65. She became a resident at Canora’s long-term-care facility for a short period before moving to the Norquay health Centre. She was an active member of St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church in Norquay and belonged to the Church Ladies’ Aid and the Rosary Society. She was a member of the NICE Centre in Norquay and volunteered at the Norquay Gateway Lodge. Predeceased by her parents, Anton and Mary, her husband, Joseph, two daughters, Cecilia in infancy and Sylvia Karstad, four brothers, Brownie, Frank, Joseph and Peter, a sister, Elizabeth Kukura, and a granddaughter, Erin Cherewyk in infancy, she is survived by two sons, Joseph (Mavis) of Elliot Lake, Ont., and David (Linda) of Regina; three daughters, Ida (Alton) Johnson of Norquay, Angie (Glen) Larson of Norquay and Mary (Don) Suchy of Norquay; 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Burial was in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church Cemetery with Preeceville Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on May 11, 1937, on a farm on the Hazel Dell area to Sam and Helen Antonio, she lived on the farm until her father died. She moved to Hazel Dell with her mother and in the following years, she and her mother lived with several relatives. In 1991, she and her mother moved to Sunset Extendicare in Regina. Predeceased by her parents, Sam and Helen, a sister, Nettie, and a brother, John, she is survived by two brothers, Paul (Bonnie) and Philip (Doreen); and three sisters, Isabel Pasiechnick, Betty Dziaduck and Ester (Eddie) Prystay. Canora Courier, March 15, 2006 Page 2 REUSCH: A family graveside service was held for Anna Marie Reusch, 97, of Winnipeg, and formerly of Kamsack, who died Jan. 31, with Pastor Tom Lurvey officiating. Arrangements were by Klassen Funeral Home. Born in Winnipeg to Ann and Gustav Anderson, she went to work at the T. Easton Company at age 14, then worked at the Hudson’s Bay Company. In 1930, she married Frederick Elwood Reusch, a teacher, and the couple moved to Tiny, Preeceville, Kamsack, For Qu’Appelle and Yorkton. After her husband’s death, she returned to Winnipeg where she was known as a piano player. Predeceased by her husband, her parents, four brothers, Ted (Glada), Roland, Carl (Ellen) and Herbert, and one sister, Vivian (Arthur) Maxwell, she is survived by three daughters, Beverley (Herb) Copland, Shirley Tronrud and Delaura (John) Weidenbacher; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Canora Courier, March 15, 2006 Page 2 JOSEPHSON: A memorial service for Arnold Lloyd, 79, of Creston, B.C., and formerly of Canora, who died Feb. 5 at Creston Valley Hospital, was held at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church in Creston with Pastor Ron Bently officiating. Born on Sept. 18, 1926, in Canora to Peter and Inga Josephson, he attended school in Rose Valley. He was an active member of St. Stephen’s church. Predeceased by his parents, Peter and Inga Josephson, he is survived by his wife, Benita; a son, Trevor (Rebecca) of Vancouver; and a brother, Ivan of Creston. Canora Courier, March 15, 2006 Page 2 MUSLEH: Funeral service for Dr. Fuad Musleh, 74, of Regina, and formerly of Norquay, who died Feb. 26, was held mar. 2 at the chapel of Victoria Avenue Funeral Home with Pastor Jerry Borkowsky officiating. Interment will be held at a later date with Victoria Avenue Funeral Home in care of arrangements. After arriving in Canada in 1981, he practiced medicine in Moosomin, Norquay and Regina. Predeceased by his wife, Freda, and a granddaughter, Jacklyn, he is survived by two sons, Rick and Tony, one brother, Shawki, and two grandchildren. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church with Rev. Ivan Derkach officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on mar. 12, 1912, on the family farm in the Swan Plain district to Nikoli and Justina (Fedak) Tataryn, she attended the Swan Plain area school In 1931, she married Martin Yagelniski of Hyas and they farmed in the area. After her husband died in 1976, she continued to live on the farm. Due to failing health, she became a resident of the Canora Gateway Lodge in December of 2002. Predeceased by her parents, Nikoli and Justina, her husband, Martin, a son, Carl in infancy, eight brothers, Harry, Mike, John, Bill, Fred, Andrew, Tom and Peter, and a sister, Ann Holodnuik, she is survived by five sons, Adolph (Mary) Yagelniski of Hyas, Stanley Yagelniski of Hyas, Nestor (Loretta) Yaganiski of Saskatoon, Ludwig Yagelniski of Hyas and Frank (Loretta) Yaganiski of Hyas; a daughter, Marjorie (Mike) Danko of Edmonton; nine grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Canora Courier, March 15, 2006 Page B6 MURRAY: Funeral service for Lillian Irene Murray, 93, of Invermay, who died Feb. 14, was held Feb. 20 at the Invermay Community Hall with Pastor Karl Kienle, Pastor Dan Dugan and Terry Tompkins officiating. Burial was in the Invermay Cemetery with Tompkins Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on July 28, 1912, southwest of Rama to Joe and Bella Currah, she attended Boxmore and Mainroad schools. She worked for Stanley Lucan in Kamsack before she married Arthur Murray on July 28, 1934 at Mainroad School. They lived on the John Murray homestead. She was a member of the United Church ACW, the horticultural society and the senior citizens’ club. After taking several art classes, she produced many oil paintings. In 1972, she and Arthur retired to a new house in Invermay. She continued to live at the house for several years after her husband died in 1989. Her final hoe was at the Invermay Gateway Lodge. Predeceased by her parents, Arthur, a son, Gerald, a daughter, Joyce, four brothers, William, Robert, Vernon and Thomas, and a sister at birth, she is survived by a son, Irvin (Sharon) Murray; two daughters, Ivy (Wilfred) Biliske and Verna (Jack) Prychak; a sister, Minnie Korchinski; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Canora Courier, March 15, 2006 Page B6 PASLOSKI: Funeral service for Annastazya (Nettie) Theresa Pasloski, 92, of Rama, who died mar. 1 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, was held mar. 7 at St. Anthony’s Roman catholic Church in Rama with Rev. Antoni Degutis officiating. Burial was in St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Parish Cemetery, north of Rama, with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of Arrangements. Born on Apr. 15, 1913, in the Dobrowody District to Joseph and Anna (Diakow) Bugiera, she attended Dobrowody School. In 1934, she married Walter Pasloski. They built their home two years later in the Rama district where they farmed. In March of 1980, they moved to Rama and a month later, Walter died. She was active in the church. Predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Anna, her husband, Walter, two brothers, John and Edward, two sisters Caroline Balawyder and Magda in infancy, and a grandson, Barry Pasloski, she is survived by four sons, Leonard (Vivian) of Rama, Richard (Marj) of Red Lake, Ont., Thomas (Rose) of Yorkton and Jerry (Sonja) of Saskatoon; three daughters, Elaine Olson of Rama, Betty (Al) Wasylenka of Christopher Lake, Sask., and Jeanette (Glen) Rusk of Edmonton; three sisters, Katie Miechkota of Winnipeg, Antonia Pasloski of Surrey, and Mary Macala of Invermay, 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Canora Courier, March 15, 2006 Page B6 KOPECK: Funeral service for Bronek (Brownie) Kopeck, 87, of Canora, who died Mar. 6 at Canora Hospital, was held Mar. 11 at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church with Rev. Joakim Rac officiating. Burial was in Canora Cemetery with Leson’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Aug. 25, 1918, on the family farm in the Good Lake district to Matthew and Irene (Stratychuk) Kopeck, he attended Poplar Springs School. On Oct. 23, 1941, he married Bella Kudeba in Canora and they lived on the Kopeck family farm. He served in the army for a short while. They lived in Canora for a short period before moving back to the farm. They operated the Dari-Dip in Canora in late 1950s in addition to operating the farm. They retired from farming in 1984 and in 1996, they purchased a house in Canora. He was a member of the Canadian Wheat Board and a lifetime member of SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church. Predeceased by his parents, Matthew and Irene, a son, James, four brothers, Mike, Steve, Walter and Peter, and four sisters, Annie Humeniuk, Francis Zorian, Mary Homeniuk and Albina Diak, he is survived by his wife, Bella; a son, Jerry (Theresa) of Bonnyville, Alta.; four daughters, Violet (Celestin) Bouvier of Lac La Biche, Alta., Margaret (Garry) Gentle of Saskatoon, Gladys (Verne) Harrison of Lac La Biche and Adeline (Wilf) Leson of Canora; two sisters, Olga (Bill) Danyluk of Canora and Jennie (Harry) Wihnan of Canora; 12 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Canora Courier, March 15, 2006 Page B6 SOOKOCHEFF: Miles Nicholas Sookocheff was born June 9, 1956 in Canora, Sask., and passed away on February 16, 2006 in Wilkie, Sask., at the age of 49. Prayers were held on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. at St. James’ Roman Catholic Church. Funeral Mass took place on Monday, Feb. 20, 2006 at 10 a.m. at St. James’ Roman Catholic Church. Celebrant was Father Andrew Wychucki. Organist was Leona Pernitsky. Eulogist was Gary Smith. Honourary casket bearers were all whose lives were touched by Miles. Active casket bearers were Jon Sookocheff (son), Warren Sookocheff (son), Kevin Sookocheff (son), Lorne Sookochoff (brother), Floyd Sookochoff (brother), Jack Purves (friend). Interment was at the Canora Cemetery. The following day a brief farewell service was held at Leson’s Funeral Chapel in Canora, Sask. where Miles was buried beside his father in the family plot in the Canora Cemetery. Miles is survived by his wife, Joanna; his children, sons Jon (Nancy) Sookocheff, Warren Sookocheff and Kevin Sookocheff; mother Laura Sookochoff; brothers, Floyd (Caroline) Sookochoff and their children Kayl and Hanna; Lorne (Dawn) Sookocheff and their children Geoff, Michelle and Jennifer. He was predeceased by his father Nick Sookochoff in 2006. Tributes were made to Community Services Heartland Health District. Canora Courier, March 15, 2006 Page B8 – Person items of interest to Stenen and district readers Former Hyas resident remembered Bulletins at Grace United (Sturgis) and Trinity United (Preeceville) on Sunday, Mar. 5 were given in memory of Jean Trebish by her family. Rev. Miles Russell reflected on the life of Jean saying, Jean (Parsey) was born March 30, 1926 and died March 8, 2005. Jean was born in Hudson Bay, one of sic children. Because her father worked for the railroad, the family had lived in Hudson Bay, Ketchen, and Hyas. After here school years, she attended Normal School in Regina, becoming a school teacher. Jean taught in Barthel, Sask., where she met her future husband, Ralph. They were married in the Greek Orthodox Church in Canora, Oct. 18, 1947. During their marriage, Jean and Ralph lived in Sudbury, Ont., on a farm near Usherville, and then in Usherville itself. Jean was a homemaker throughout these years, raising a family, and actively farming, gardening, cooking, baking, sewing, canning and preserving. Jean worked at the post office in Usherville as an assistant for a number of years. Jean and Ralph raised three children, Gloria, Brian, and Diane. Jean and Ralph moved to Preeceville in 1980, and Ralph died a few months later in 1981. Jean continued to live in Preeceville and was a regular part of the worshipping community of Trinity United. She was an active member of the UCW and the Perogie Grannies. Jean loved knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Jean also loved gardening, decorating Ukrainian Easter Eggs, playing cards, doing crosswords puzzles, and being with her family and friends. |
