Funeral service for Nick Smandych, 92, of Calder, who died July 29, was held
Aug. 3 at the chapel of Bailey's Funeral Home in Yorkton with Rev. Patrick
Powalinsky of St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church officiating. Burial
was at Yorkton City Cemetery with Bailey's Funeral Home in care of
arrangements. Born
Nov. 21, 1913 in the Roblin district to John and Eustania Smandych, he married
Dora Horaska on June 1, 1939. The couple farmed in the Calder area. Predeceased by his wife, one son, William, three brothers, George, Tony and Matt, two sisters, Mary Rurak and Rosie Horaska, and a great-grandson, Carter Sterzer, he is survived by one daughter, Marlene Smandych of Kamsack; one brother, Mike (Nettie) of Yorkton; three sisters, Anne Rurak of Calgary, Helen (Sozon) Malinsky of Canora and Bella (Tommy) Robinson of Binscarth, Man.; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Funeral service for Mary Liebrecht, 90, of Yorkton, and formerly of the Rhein
district, who, died June 27, was held July 1 at Christ Lutheran Church in
Rhein with Pastor Daphne Bender officiating. Burial was at the parish cemetery
with Bailey's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born
Aug. 3, 1915 in the Rhein district to John Jacob and Katherine (nee Hoeashtien)
Schwartz, she attended Rhein School. On Mar. 26, 1933, she married Theodore
Liebrecht at Christ Lutheran Church in Rhein. The couple lived in Rhein until
1955, when they moved to Winnipeg where she worked at The Bay for 25 years.
After the death of her husband in 1983, she moved to Yorkton. In 1986, she
became a resident of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home. Predeceased by her parents, her husband, three brothers and seven sisters, she is survived by one son, Leslie (Judy) of Richmond, B.C.; one daughter, Marcella Propp of Yorkton; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Canora Courier, August 23, 2006 Page B3 DRANCHUK: Funeral service for George Dranchuk, 78, of Canora, who died Aug. 15 at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon, was held Aug. 19 at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Basil Chomos officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on Apr. 28, 1928, to Mike and Annie (Dulock) Dranchuk in the Hyas district, he attended school in Hyas for 11 years and then received his Grade 12 from the Saskatoon Technical Collegiate. He attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and then returned to the family farm while he apprenticed for the position of a rural municipality administrator. On Sept. 3, 1956, he married Adeline B. Belitsky and they lived in Canora for a short period. His first job as an RM administrator was in Pelly with the RM of St. Phillips, which he began on Nov. 1, 1957. He returned to Canora when he went to work for the RM of Sliding Hills and then for the RM of Keys. He retired on Mar. 1, 1991. He was active in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Canora. He served on the parish council and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Predeceased by his parents, Mike and Annie, and a sister in infancy, he is survived by his wife Adeline of Canora; two sons, Chris (Claudia) of Vernon, B.C., and Jason (Cindy) of Calgary; two daughters, Barbara (Clarence) Zelinski of Saskatoon and Carol (Ben) Hudye of Madge Lake; two brothers, Peter (Eleanor) of Kelowna and Eugene (Marg) of Vernon; three sisters, Helen Chapman of Evesham, England, Lillian Toporowski of Calgary and Angeline Secundiak of Yorkton; 11 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Canora Courier, August 23, 2006 Page B4 DANYLCHUK: Funeral service for Dr. Zenovey Orest Alexander Danylchuk, 62, of Saskatoon, and formerly of Canora, who died Aug. 16 at Saskatoon City Hospital, was held Aug. 21 at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity in Canora with Rev. Patrick Powalinsky, Rev. Taras Makowsky and Rev. Peter Wasylenko officiating. Burial was in the Canora Cemetery with Leson's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Born on May 30, 1944, in Winnipeg to Alexander and Paula Danylchuk, he grew up in Canora where he completed his high school education. He attended the College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. He married Helen Torbiak in 1967 and in 1970, they relocated to Canora where he joined his father's medical practice. He practised medicine in Canora for 25 years, but was forced into an early retirement by poor health. For the past five years, he was a resident of a care home in Saskatoon. During his early school days, he earned various scholarships for playing the violin and provincial and national music festivals. He was a church choir member. Outside his medical practice, he enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, curling and family vacations. He was an avid photographer. He was known for his "toys", particularly his luxury cars. Predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Paula, and his wife, Helen, he is survived by four daughters, Larissa (Brent) Van Caeseele of Yorkton, Lesia (Dale) Kushner of Calgary, Paula (Brad) Onysko of Calgary and Patrusia (Robert) Rudy of Saskatoon; a brother, Marc (Michelle); two sisters, Daria Danylchuk and Bohdonna (Peter) Patrie of Winnipeg, and five grandchildren.
Canora Courier, August 23, 2006 Page B4 SHUMAY: Jean (Kosar) passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 19, 2006 at the age of 93. Although there is sadness at her death, family and friends are able to take comfort from contemplating the riches of her life. Jean was born in Buchanan; Sask., Nov. 12, 1912. She married John Shumay in 1934 and took on the responsibilities of a farm wife and raising a family. Jean was a devoted wife and mother who put family first. She lived her life with grace and dignity; an amazing woman full of love and caring. All those who knew her can attest to her inquiring mind and her interest in life which remained constant until the time of her death. Mom left a legacy of love, generosity and selflessness, strength, compassion and family values. Jean was predeceased by her husband John, sons Donald (infant), Stephen and George, son-in-law Steve Spelay and grandson Blaine Spelay and parents Steve and Agnes Kosar and brothers and sisters. Jean is survived by her loving family, daughters, Mildred Spelay of Yorkton, Agnes (Boris) Titus of Regina, Jeanette (Marvin) Williams of Saskatoon, son Bill (Zoria) Shumay of Swift Current, daughter-in-law Shirley Shumay of Yorkton; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several step brothers and sisters. Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton on Saturday, July 22, 2006 with Very Rev. Bryan Bayda, C.Ss.R as the celebrant. The responses were led by Ed Pindus, Colette Karapita and parish choir members. The organist, Melita Benko led soloist, Colette Karapita, in the singing of the hymns, "Be Not Afraid" and "Holy Mary, Gentle Woman". The crossbearer was Jackie Elsasser and the epistle reader was Zoria Shumay. Reflections of Jean's life were conveyed by son, Bill. The interment took place at St. Mary's Parish Cemetery, Whitesand, with Trenton Shumay, Lawrence Kosar, Garret Titus, John Shumay, Darrel Spelay and Adam Kosar serving as the casket bearers. Mom touched the hearts of all those who knew her. We love her and will miss her dearly. Funeral arrangements were in care of Bailey's Funeral Home. Canora Courier, August 23, 2006 Page B4 REMANDO: Sophie Remando beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on July 19, 2006, in Duncan, B.C., after a short hospitalization. Sophie was born March 1, 1923 in the Mohela district, Canora, Sask. She was predeceased by: her parents Jacob and Katherine (Plypchuk) Rewakowsky; sisters Mary Pacholy, Annie Stankewich, Tillie Danyluk and Nellie; brothers William, John, Paul and Joe. Sophie is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, John, sons Richard (Alma), Johnny Remenda (Leona); daughter Candy (Bruce) of Richman, 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; also a sister Pauline (Cliff) Lee along with many nieces and nephews. Sophie and John were married in Fort William, Ont., then moved back to Saskatchewan to farm. They later moved to B.C. They settled in Lake Cowachin, B.C., where they resided until her passing. service was held for Isabelle (White) Fogg on
Saturday, Aug. 19 at Invermay Community Hall with Terry Tomkins officiating.
She died on Aug. 16 at the age of 71. Granddaughters Paige Fogg and Presley
Fogg attended the memorial book. Nephews Kevin White and Dale White were
ushers. Lillian Hrynchyshyn, Margaret Holmes, Kathleen Minhinnick and Elaine
Fidek were honourary pallbearers. Active pallbearers were Travis, Brendan,
Craig, Aaron, Chad and Brayden Fogg, all grandsons. Keri Zawada and Kristy
Fogg read tribute poems for their grandma. Don Fogg, the eldest son, spoke
about his mother, her life and what was important to her - mostly her family.
She had a good, full life and was known to everyone through 19 years at the
Red and White Store in Invermay. She and George, her husband of 53 years, made
many new friends through the grocery business. Interment
was in Invermay Cemetery with lunch served at the hall. She is survived by husband, George; sons, Don (Jan) of Langenburg, Ron (Sharon) of Yorkton, Jeff (Yvonne) of Invermay, Reg (Marianne) of Invermay and Gerard (Stacey) of Wadena; grandchildren, Keri (Darren) Zawada, Travis; Chad, Brayden; Jamie, Kristy, Janelle; Brendan, Craig, Aaron, Paige, Ethan, Kyra; Presley, Brett; great-grandchild Maysen Zawada; sister Rachel Hake of Balcarres; brothers, Rob (Millie) White of Saskatoon and Sid (Blanche) White of Wadena; sister-in-law Jacquie Fogg of Invermay and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. |
