Canora Courier, January 25, 2006 Page B5 – Personal items of interest to Stenen and district readers Funeral in Kelowna for former resident Juanita Juneau (nee Davis) received word from Ella Kostaschuk of Kelowna, and formerly of Stenen, of the death of Walter Polischuk, who passed away peacefully in Kelowna on Thursday, Nov. 17 at the age of 87. Arthur and Gloria Zubko (nee Kurkowsky), former residents of Stenen, forwarded your correspondent a memorial card and the obituary for Polischuk. A memorial service was held for Walter on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the chapel of Springfield Funeral Home, Kelowna, with Rev. Dr. Gordon Fletcher officiating. After the service, a reception was held at Springfield Funeral Home Family Centre. Interment of ashes took place at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery. Walter was born to Wasyl and Mary Polischuk (nee Simchuk) on Apr. 15, 1918 on the family homestead located two miles east and one mile north of Stenen. The two-storey house with lightning rods was situated on a hilltop and surrounded by maple trees. Walter’s parents later purchased the quarter of land to the east of their homestead quarter from a man by the name of Propanko. Since there was a newly constructed residence on that quarter, the family moved there (Don and Heather Ostapak are the present owners and operators of that quarter of land.) At an early age, Walter was expected to work the land and help with the harvesting, thus, he never had a chance t finish school. As a young adult, he was the Sunday School superintendent at the Hyas Baptist Church. At a Young People’s Rally in Saskatoon he met Ruby Elanko, whom he later married. In 1950, they became the parents of a daughter Audrey. When their farm home was destroyed by fire, they rebuilt, and there Walter, occupied with farming and Ruby with tending the household, raised their daughter. Failing health prompted the Polischuks to sell their farming operation and move to Kelowna, B.C., where Audrey was teaching. There they enjoyed a comfortable home with a backyard full of marvelous fruit trees. (Your correspondent very clearly remembers the morning that they left this area for Kelowna since they spent the night at the home of his parents, Fred and Lena Davis.) In 2003, Walter suffered another stroke, but being a fighter, he tried to regain his mobility and speech. Eventually he became a resident at a special care nursing home, where he died. Predeceased by his parents Wasyl Polischuk in 1948 and mother Mary Polischuk in 1965, sister Polly Deduke in 1960 and Lillian Woodburn in 1997, and brother Dan in 2001, he is survived by his wife Ruby; daughter Audrey (Dave) Elliot of Kelowna; grandchildren Becky (Brian) McNeil, Aaron (Miranda), and Jillian; two sisters Jennie Kachman of Edmonton and Alice Wilcox of Sun City, Ariz., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
