Orest Popowich of Wildwood, AB and formerly of the
Buchanan District passed away suddenly on January 26th, 2007 at the age of 60
years. Ivan was born on May 21st, 1946 in Canora to Fred and Emily (nee
Ochitwa) Popowich. He was raised on the family farm eight miles south of
Buchanan, SK. He attended a one room school before moving to Buchanan and
finishing his schooling at the Buchanan High School. He left home shortly
after to work for a construction company and he worked in various places like
Canora, Esterhazy and Weyburn. He
then met Faye Elder in Weyburn. They were married in 1965. Following their
marriage, they moved to Alberta where he once again began working for a
construction company in which he worked for many years. In 1974, he remarried
Judy Jangula in Canora. In 1991, he changed jobs and moved to Wildwood, AB a
small town northwest of Edmonton, AB. He worked for a hotel/motel business and
he also took care of a mini-mall as the general care taker and security
personnel. He worked there until his sudden passing. Ivan will be missed by
all. Ivan
is survived by his son Rick of Louisville, Kentucky, USA; his brother David
(Audrey) of Canora, SK and his sister Linda (James) Tratch of Canora, SK; his
aunt Lorraine Senkiw of Yorkton, SK: his nine nieces and nephews as well as
numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents: his father Fred in 1995
and his mother Emily in 1997; his brother Alfred in 1998 and his second wife
Judy. A
Visitation was held on Thursday, February 1st, 2007 from the Chapel of Leson's
Funeral Home and a Graveside Service was held on Friday, February 2nd, 2007 at
the Vasloutz Cemetery, Southwest of Buchanan with Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac

JEROME (HELENA) SLUGOCKI, OSB. Sr.
Jerome Slugocki died peacefully on January 20, 2007 at St. Benedict's
Monastery Health Care Centre. Her gentle and quiet passing, was symbolic of
her well lived life. She was 91 years of age and in her 68th year of monastic
profession. Sr.
Jerome was born on October 9, 1915 on the family homestead in Buchanan,
Saskatchewan. Her parents Frank & Mary (Lanski) Slugocki emigrated from
Poland in 1903. Sr. Jerome was the 7th of 12 surviving children, a child Ben
having died in infancy in Poland. Sr.
Jerome entered the Benedictine Community in Arborg, Manitoba on October 13,
1936 and made her monastic profession on July 11, 1939. She was a very gentle,
compassionate, prayer-filled person who was always ready to be of service. Her
cheerful and friendly disposition as well as her sense of order and leadership
ability endeared her to all whom she worked with in her many years of ministry
-- students, patients, the elderly, staff and sewing companions. Sr.
Jerome spent 17 years caring for students who were boarders at the convent
schools in Arborg and. Sifton, Manitoba and St. Benedict's Academy in Winnipeg-,
20 years as a nurses' aide in the Winnipegosis General Hospital, St.
Benedict's Manor and Arborg District Personal Care Home and St. Benedict's
Monastery Health Care Centre, Winnipeg; 14 years in Dietary at St. Paul's
College on Ellice Avenue in Winnipeg, St. Benedict's Convents in both
Pritchard Avenue, Winnipeg, and Polonia, Manitoba, the Archbishop's Residence
for Cardinal Flahiff when he first arrived in Winnipeg and Sacred Heart
Hospital, Russell, and Johnson Memorial Hospital in Gimli, Manitoba. Her final
and much loved ministry was in the quilting room of St. Benedict's Monastery,
Winnipeg. Together with several women, quilts were designed and sewn for
distribution to people in need. When health problems caused her work to cease,
she spent her few remaining years in the Monastery's Health Care Centre. Sr.
Jerome was predeceased by her parents Frank and Mary Slugocki, sister Rose and
brothers Julius, Joseph, Ben, Albert, Walter, and Bernard. She is survived by
brothers Edwin, Weyburn, SK, Eddie (Rose) and sister Jean Sakundiak of
Yorkton, SK, and sister Elizabeth Clampett of Lethbridge, AB, numerous nieces,
nephews, cousins and members of her religious community. A
Vigil Service was held on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at 7:00 p.m., at St.
Benedict's Monastery Chapel, Winnipeg, presided by Sr. Irene Burzynski,
Prioress. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, January
24, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. presided by Msgr. Louis McCloskey with interment in the
Monastery Cemetery. The
Sisters wish to express their gratitude to Dr. Bronislaw Gorski and the staff
of the Monastery Health Care Centre for their loving care and support of Sr.
Jerome. May
she rest in peace. Flowers

MAKOWSKY: A
funeral service for Petronella Makowsky, 91 of Kamsack, who passed away in the
Kamsack Hospital on Thursday, Jan. 26, was held on Jan. 31 in the All Saints
Ukrainian Orthodox Church with Rev. Patrick Powalinsky officiating. Interment
was in the Sliding Hills Christian Cemetery at Mazeppa. Petronella
(Patricia/Pat) Makowsky (nee: Ducheminsky) was born on December 22, 1915 at
the home of her parents, Paul and Nellie (nee: Ortynsky) Ducheminsky,
south-west of Veregin. She was the fourth-oldest child in a family of eight. Patricia
attended Wisnia School and quit before completing Grade Eight to help out at
the family farm. On
October 14, 1934, Patricia married Tony (Anton) Makowsky at Mikado. Patricia
and Tony lived at the Makowsky homestead in the Donwell area for nine years.
It was here that their son, Richard was born. They had rented land next to
Wisnea School for a few years and while there, their daughter Judy was born.
They then moved to the village of Veregin which was nearer to the farmland
that they had purchased. While
in Veregin, Patricia raised chickens and sold eggs to the hatchery in Canora.
At various times she had also worked at the Veregin Post Office, the Telephone
Office, Skrapek' s Meat Market in Kamsack and Jumaga' s General Store in
Veregin. She was also Tony's `chief hired man' during harvest time. In the
early 1960s, Patricia took over the concession at the curling rink while Tony
was the chief ice-maker and custodian. Patricia
enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and cross-stitching. She loved to bake
and cook. Her recreational time was spent curling, singing in the church
choir, being a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Ladies' Association and the
Seniors' Harmony Centre Choir and volunteering in the community. In
1965, Patricia and Tony rented out their land and moved into Kamsack. She took
on a position in the newly opened Kamsack and District Nursing Home, where she
worked until retiring in 1981. She did clothing mending for the Nursing Home
for many years after her retirement. In 2005, Patricia was presented with a
Life Membership by the Kamsack and District Nursing Home Auxiliary, after 30
years of service. However, the true commitment of her life was her love and
dedication to her family. She
was predeceased by her parents, Paul and Nellie (nee Ortynsky) Ducheminsky;
sisters, Jennie Kondra, Bernice Jastraub, Helen Roy, Albina Ducheminsky;
brothers, Albin, Edward and Leonard; granddaughter, Sherry Stone and
great-grandson, Anthony Green. She leaves to celebrate her life, her husband of 72 years, Tony; their son Richard (Carol) Makowsky of Nipawin and their children, Cheryl (Don) Chynoweth of Calgary, AB, Liane (Rick) Green of Love, SK, Christopher (Lea Anne) Makowsky of Okotoks, AB; their daughter, Judy (Stan) Stone of Kamsack and their children, Neal of New York, NY, Wendy (Dave Kutcher) Stone of Regina; and 10 great-grandchildren, Shaelynn, Stepanie, and Samantha Green; Kaden and Danik Chynoweth; Meghan, Taylor, Jaylene and Michael Makowsky; and Hunter Kucher. ZEIBIN 1921 - 2007 It
is with sorrow that the family of Fred Zeibin, age 85, announces his passing
on January 26, 2007 at St. Paul's Personal Care Home in The Pas, Manitoba. His
memory will be cherished by his loving wife of sixty-two years, Florence. He
will be greatly missed by his children and grandchildren. Fred is survived by
granddaughter Krystal (Kirk) Hodge and great-granddaughter Anikka,
granddaughter Heather Nieminen and their father Gary Nieminen; daughter Elaine
(Wayne) McGimpsey and their children Tasha (George), Ian and Sarah; daughter Eleanora
(Fred) Robertson and their children Max, Lucas and Drew. Fred is also survived
by his brother, John of Kamsack, Saskatchewan. Fred
was predeceased by his parents John (1936) and Dora (2001) Zeibin; daughter
Jeanette Nieminen (1987) and his infant grandson Sean Robertson (1993). Fred
was born May 8, 1921 at Buchanan, Saskatchewan. He attended Devil's Lake
School and at the age of fifteen, after his father's death, began to manage
the family farm along with his mother and younger brother, John. Fred was a
grain buyer from the fifties until 1969 when he relocated to The Pas, Manitoba
where Fred was employed by Manfor until his retirement in 1986. One
of Fred's greatest enjoyments was spending time at their cabin at Rocky Lake.
Their cabin became a very special place for all their children and
grandchildren. Other activities that Fred enjoyed were traveling, playing
cards, visiting and telling stories. Fred maintained a keen interest in the
people about him until his death. Following
cremation a memorial service was held from the Westminister United Church in
The Pas, Manitoba with Reverend Murray Wenstob officiating. The Inurnment will
take place in the summer of 2007 at the Canora Cemetery, Canora, Saskatchewan. Honorary
pallbearers were Fred's grandchildren; Krystal Hodge, Heather Nieminen, Tasha
McGimpsey, Ian McGimpsey, Sarah McGimpsey, Max Robertson, Lucas Robertson and
