Gurski of Canora passed away peacefully at the Canora
Gateway Lodge on June 28th, 2007 at the age of 94 years. Stan
was born on April 20th, 1913 on the family farm in the Tadmore district to
Steve and Dora (nee Gogol) Gurski. As a young boy, Stan moved along with his
parents to the United States and settled in Wheeling, West Virginia where he
attended school. They then returned to Canada when Stan was in grade three and
he attended the Gogol school until grade ten. Stan worked on his parent's farm
until he married Pauline Kozak on October 15th, 1936 in Canora, SK. They
shared their lives together for 62 wonderful years. During that time, Stan
purchased a saw mill and was able to saw and plane thousands of board feet of
lumber and he also did extensive carpentry work. Stan also purchased a
threshing machine and hired a threshing crew to harvest the crops for his
neighbours and himself. Stan's
other jobs included driving a school bus and working as a mechanic in the
local Co-op Service Station and in the Canora school bus garage. Stan then
built a service station twelve miles north of Canora and sold petroleum
products and groceries for thirty-one years. Stanley was involved in many
other activities throughout his life including census taking. He also served
as a School Trustee for a number of years and secretary of the Canora School
Board Association. Stan's main hobby was playing the violin and, of course, he
enjoyed time spent with his family. Stan
and Pauline retired in 1989 and moved to Canora. In 1998, Pauline passed away
and Stanley continued to reside in his home before entering the Canora Gateway
Lodge in January of 2006, where he resided until his passing. Stan was a
member of the Knights of Columbus since 1948. He will be dearly missed by all
who knew and loved him. Stan
is survived by his four daughters: Sylvia (Methodius) Lozinski of Hyas, SK,
Elsie (Wayne) Swan of Granisle, B.C., Linda (Barry) Oliver of Kelowna, B.C.
and Lynette (Larry) Duncan of Kelowna, B.C.; his brother Paul (Vicky) Gurski
of Surrey, B.C.; his two sisters: Mary Pasloski of Rama, SK and Dolly Kutney
of Red Lake, ON., and fourteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife Pauline; his parents Steve and Dora; his
sisters Elizabeth Strocen and Nellie Zayshley and his great-grandson Brooks
Oliver. The Vigil of Prayer service was held on Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, July 4th, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Canora with Rev. Dr. Vitalis Azike, Celebrant. Rite of Committal followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Canora Gateway Lodge Auxiliary or the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Decorby Canora Council, as tokens of remembrance. Arrangements have been entrusted to LESON'S FUNERAL HOME, Canora. (563-5671). |
