MARY POLOVNIKOFF May 7, 1915 - February 1, 2007

Mary Polovnikoff (nee Holoboff) was born near Canora, Saskatchewan to pioneering farming parents and grew up in a family of four brothers (Pete, Mike, Bill and Alex) and a sister, Anne. She moved to Edmonton circa 1960 where she resided until her death.

Her life was devoted to her daughter, Elaine Byron, and her son, Don Polovnikoff, both of whom earned university degrees and whom Mary applauded with pride as they flourished as a journalist and a professional engineer. Tragically, Elaine predeceased Mary in 1998 and Don predeceased his sister and mother in 1975.

Mary strongly supported many environmental, social and humanitarian causes throughout her life and only recently was disabled from active participation in her noble and honourable endeavours.

While she was active, she enjoyed travel to destinations including Hawaii, Cuba, Jamaica, and Russia. Mary was proud of her Russian heritage and loved Russian people and their culture, their music, dance and song.

Mother Earth has lost a precious daughter, servant and protector.

At Mary's request, there will be no service.

Metro Tymiak, beloved husband of Olga Tymiak of Canora passed away suddenly at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on February 7th, 2007 at the age of 92 years. Metro was born on September 22nd, 1914 in the Jasmin District near Ituna to John & Francis (nee Mazur) Tymiak. He moved along with his parents to the Tadmore district in 1931 and in 1934 they moved two miles west of Canora before once again moving back two miles west of Tadmore. Later the Tymiak family relocated to the Ituna district except Nick and Metro who remained in Tadmore.

On October 28th, 1939, Metro was united in marriage to Olga Boyko at the Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canora. He began working on various farms to earn a living and in May of 1942, they purchased their own farm, two miles north of Tadmore. They started farming with twenty-three cultivated acres, two milk cows and twenty chickens, the rest of the land was bush and river. Metro became well known in the community for his carpentry work, butchering of farm animals, and filling the veterinary needs. He was on constant call by farmers for field work with a wage of $1.00 per day. Throughout the winter months, he would chop at least 75 sleigh loads of wood with the use of an axe only.

As years went on, Metro purchased more land, cleared the land and picked the stones and roots by hand and had six to eight horses to help with the other farm work. Later with the help of larger machinery and a tractor, Metro and Olga farmed two and a half quarters of land. Metro was a farmer at heart. He was a member of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool and the Corofin Snow Removal Club. Metro and Olga sold their farm in 1972 and moved to Canora and resided on Centre Avenue until the present time. Upon moving to Canora he worked as a carpenter for various construction companies.

Metro was known for having beautiful yards and gardens and he was very meticulous in keeping his farm yard and his yard in Canora neat and tidy. Metro was a member of the original carolling group to raise money to build a church in Tadmore. He was a strong and devoted member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Tadmore where he also served a term as president. He was presently an active member of Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canora. He was always willing to help on many occasions with the building and maintenance jobs at the church, hall and rectory.

Metro then retired in 1979 and enjoyed many happy hours playing card games, especially Canasta with family and friends. He loved hunting, but fishing was his passion. Metro knew the secrets on "how to get the big one" and knew every secret fishing spot in the lakes and rivers in the surrounding area. He also loved to go mushroom and berry picking. He had a knack for making things, if he couldn't find it he would make it. He could repair almost anything... he was Mr. Fix It!

Metro always found time for his family, friends and in assisting others. He looked forward to their visits and loved to travel to visit his children and grandchildren and he was especially proud of their accomplishments. Both he and Olga loved to socialize and enjoyed dancing. Metro had a healthy, happy and rewarding life. He had major surgery on March 31st, 2006 and recuperated very well, but on February 6th he suffered a stroke and passed away peacefully on February 7th.

He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by all. Metro leaves to mourn his passing and to celebrate his life: his loving wife of 67 years, Olga of Canora, his son Glen (Lena) of Yorkton and their children: Geof of Yorkton, Lori (Randy) Selinger and great grandchildren: Madelyn, Ava, Ethan, Grace and Gavin of Saskatoon. Daughter Sylvia (Ron) Hoekema of Red Deer, AB and their daughter: Roxanne (Mick) Ludu and great grandchildren: Rick, Isaac and Isabelle of Lloydminster, AB. He is survived by his brother Joe (Emily) Tymiak of Ituna; his sister-in-law: Ann Tymiak of Balcarres, SK as well as many numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents: John in 1955 and Francis in 1961; his sisters: Lena (Peter) Demchynski, Mary (Peter Shull & John Woytas); brothers: Steve (Justine), Mike (Annie), Peter (Josephine), John (Rose), Bill, Nick (Kay) and numerous nieces and nephews.
