14 miles southwest of Wynyard on July 19. He
was flying for Miccar Aerial Applicators, which operates out of the airport in
Yorkton. The

Kozun of Canora passed away peacefully at the Canora
Gateway Lodge on July 10th, 2007 at the age of 100 years. Anne
was born on December 8th, 1906 to Carl and Martha (nee Danylchuk) Haskevich.
She grew up on the family farm in the Badgerdale area. Anne attended school
until grade three as she was needed to help on the family farm. In spite of
her limited education, she taught herself to read and write in Ukrainian,
Polish and English, in which she was quite proficient. In 1923, Anne married
Joe Kozun. They lived and worked in Moose Jaw, SK for a period of time before
moving back to the Buchanan-Tiny district. They lived on several homesteads
before purchasing a quarter section of land half a mile north of Tiny. On
June 29, 1937, on their way to church, Anne's parents Carl and Martha, her
sister Florence (Flossy) and her brother John and his fiancee Alice Pedowski,
were all killed in a car/train accident. This left her and her twin sister
Mary as sole survivors. Anne looked after the farm while raising their five
children, while her husband worked away from home with the CNR. Anne loved to
cook and tend to her garden. She loved and took great pride in her flowers.
She was a good seamstress and dressmaker. Anne would look in the Eaton's
catalogue and when she saw an outfit or dress she wanted, she would just make
it on her own without using a pattern. She would also make clothes for her
family and neighbours. Anne was also a good barber and hairdresser. Living on
the farm entailed a lot of hard work. Besides tending to a large garden, she
canned and put up preserves. Anne raised chickens, pigs, cattle and horses, as
well as seeding, haying and harvesting using horses. As her children became
older, they were able to help with the chores. Annie
and Joe left the farm in 1975 when they moved into a senior's unit in
Buchanan. Anne continued to tend to a garden and her flowers. She liked to
read and play cards. She kept up with her sewing, still making her own
outfits. Anne's largest projects were making patchwork quilts for all her
grandchildren and yet some. She was always busy doing something. She enjoyed
her weekly outings to the Club 50 Plus where she played cards. She also
enjoyed going to play bingo. As her children grew up and had children of their
own, Anne looked forward to the summer when her grandchildren would come to
visit. They were her pride and joy. After her husband died in 1981, Anne
continued to live in Buchanan until 2000 when her health began to fail. When
she was 94, she moved to Canora to live with her son Rick and daughter-in-law
Phyllis. Anne lived with them until 2003 when she became a resident at the
Canora Gateway Lodge until her passing. Anne
will be lovingly remembered by. her two daughters: Ollie Duffin and Iris (Ed)
Barabash, both of Winnipeg, MB; her two sons: Ray (Marg) Kozun of Winnipeg, MB
and Rick (Phyllis) Kozun of Canora, SK; her two nieces: Olga Rudnitsky of
Saskatoon, SK and Ann Penner of B.C.; her two nephews: Mike (Ruth) Yanish of
Red Deer, AB and Ernie (Helen) Yanish of Estevan, SK and fourteen
grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Anne was predeceased by her husband Joe; her parents Carl and Martha; her
sisters Florence Haskevich and Mary Yanish; her brother John; her son John;
her nephew Peter Yanish and her greatgranddaughter Anasophia Crivea. The
Prayer Service was held on Sunday, July 15th, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral
Service was held was held on Monday, July 16th, 2007 at 10:00 a.m., both from
the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home with Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac officiating.
Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions
of sympathy may make donations to the Canora Gateway Lodge Auxiliary as tokens
of remembrance. Arrangements have been entrusted to LESON'S FUNERAL HOME, Canora. (563-5671). Canora Courier July 25, 2007 Page 17 Shirley
May Korchynos of Calgary and formerly of Pelly, SK
passed away at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, AB on July 15th, 2007
at the age of 66 years. Shirley
was born on August 7th, 1940 in the Stenen district to Mike and Mae (nee
Luchenko) Anaka. She was the third of four surviving children and grew up on
the farm where she learned to love the outdoors and rural life. She attended
elementary school at George Albert in the Stenen district, and later attended
high school in Sturgis where she experienced life away from her family for the
first time while living in the dormitory. She left school to attend Success
College in Winnipeg and later put her secretarial skills to work at the
Toronto Dominion Bank in The Pas, Manitoba. In
1958 Shirley became engaged to Walter Korchynos of Preeceville, whom she had
met at a local wedding dance and who would become her dance partner for the
next 44 years. They married on August 14th, 1959 in Stenen. That same year
they moved to Luzan, a country school southeast of Veregin, where Walter began
his career as a teacher, and Shirley hers as a mother and teacher's wife.
Their first child, Debora, was born in 1960. After staying in Luzan for three
years, the family moved to Brandon School, south of Kamsack, where they lived
in a three-room teacherage on the school property. Shirley enjoyed her 3:00
visits with the parents who came to pick up their children, and years after
they left the area, they still maintained close friendships with many of the
people who called Brandon home. Their
other two daughters were born during the Brandon years; Suzette in 1964 and
Beverly in 1969. At
the end of the 1969 school
year, the family moved to Pelly for one year (that was the plan), but many
friendships and years later saw Walter retire from teaching therein 1991. During
their Pelly years, Shirley continued to enjoy relationships with the local
people and was involved in the community through her painting, typing,
proofreading, and driving of students to many events. Some of her favourite
roles were being the wife of the baseball coach and the surrogate mom to the
many young police officers who were stationed in Pelly. She was also active in
the Church council and coffee time with her close friends. In 1974, at the age
of 34, Shirley was diagnosed with Lupus. Having been told she and her marriage
would be lucky to survive five years, Shirley was determined to prove the
doctors wrong. Her life changed drastically, and weeks at a time were spent in
hospital in Saskatoon or Canora, away from her young family; the time they did
spend together created a very strong and special bond. No longer was she able
to enjoy the outdoors gardening, camping, and fishing; instead, time was spent
inside vehicles and hotels on summer vacations that focussed on family and
just enjoying life. The close family relationships Shirley experienced as a
child continued all her life with special time being spent playing games on
the Yanchuk farm and relaxing around a fire at the Anaka cabin. Having
raised three girls, a new era in the family began when Shirley and Walter were
blessed with their first grandson in 1993, the first of six. As the six boys
grew, Shirley often commented that as much as she loved her children, there
was something special about grandchildren. In 2002, Shirley lost the love of
her life when Walter passed away suddenly at home. Her life changed again
later that year when she moved to Calgary to live with her daughter Bev and
near daughter Suzette and family. Having left her home, friends and doctors
behind, Shirley often claimed her grandsons were her best medicine. Her days
were filled with colouring, reading,
and watching living room hockey games and backyard golf, and many nights were
spent on sleepovers. Her greatest enjoyment was playing with the boys in
Calgary and talking with those in Austria. She learned to enjoy city life and
all of its conveniences, like iced caps and Chinese take-out, and she
developed a special bond with her son-in-law Brett, who never failed to make
her laugh and feel welcome. Moving
to Calgary didn't dampen her love of travelling, and trips to Banff and
Vancouver Island created fond memories and became favourite destinations. Her
health started to fail in the spring of 2007, and 33 years after being
diagnosed with a disease that was supposed to have beaten her within five, she
passed away suddenly at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary on July 15.
Shirley was small in stature but huge in spirit, kindness and determination;
she lived life to the fullest and never gave up in the face of adversity. She
was an inspiration and a treasure to all who knew and loved her, and she will
be missed immensely. Shirley
is lovingly remembered by: her three daughters: Debora (Christoph) Scharnagl
of Puch, Austria, Suzette (Brett) Thurston of Calgary, AB and Beverly
Korchynos of Calgary, AB; her grandsons: Lukas, Stefan, Markus and Thomas
Scharnagl, Zachary and Tyler Thurston; her sister: Ilene (late Eugene) Yanchuk
of Newton, MB; her brothers: Eugene (Beth) Anaka of Regina, SK and Allan (late
Eleanor) Anaka of Norquay, SK. She was predeceased by her husband Walter in
2002; her mother Mae in 1976; her father Mike in 1984 and her twin brothers:
John and William in infancy. The
Prayer Service was held on Sunday, July 22nd, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. from the

Catholic Church, Canora with Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac officiating. Interment
