spent the last years of her life at Bethany Home in Cochrane, AB, where she

this disease. Stella was a delight and an inspiration to all who knew her. We
are all fortunate to have had Stella in our lives. We know she will always be
with us. We love you and will always miss you. Stella

Funeral Services for Helen Crotenko, 82, of Hyas, who died November 24 in
Preeceville Hospital was held on November 27, 2008 at Preeceville Funeral Home
with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. Burial took place at the Stoney Creek
Cemetery near Stenen. Born

and Annie (Hanchar) Spivak at the family farm near Hyas. She attended Lake
Helen School. In 1943 she went to Winnipeg and worked at a restaurant and then
at a Bindery that made Eatons catalogues. She then returned to the family farm
to help her parents. On July 28, 1945 she married Nick Crotenko. Helen and
Nick farmed the Crotenko family farm growing grain, raising sheep, cattle,
pigs and poultry. Helen milked the cows and sold the cream as her wages. With

and butter. In 1980 Nick and Helen received a heritage award recognizing 75
years of family farming. Helen
was an avid vegetable and flower gardener. She had a small greenhouse and
started her own plants. She enjoyed cooking at which she excelled. She loved
baking and at Christmas the family would each receive a tray of her homemade
goodies! She curled in her younger years and was a member of the Homemaker's
Club and the Horticulture Club. She crocheted, knitted, and made a lot of
satin quilts for her family. When her eyes failed her to sew the quilts she
became the cook and other quilting ladies did the fine work. Nick
passed away in 1991 and Helen remained on the farm until October 2002 at which
time she moved to Hyas. When she could drive she would go to Norquay and make
perogies at the lodge there and became a member of the Perogie Mafia! While in
Hyas she helped at the Golden Age Centre to make perogies. Helen was predeceased by her husband Nick, her sisters Pauline Robinson, Nina Boyce, and Betty Sorochuk, and her brother Vern Spivak. She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Valerie (Don) Steciuk, of Preeceville, and their children Kevin (Heather) and Lisa; great- grandchildren Nicolas and William, and Emily and Morgan.
