SOPOTYK: Marie Sopotyk (nee Kochan) 1928 - 2008.

The family announces with deep sadness the passing of Marie, of Saskatoon, formerly of Canora, SK, fondly known as "Shmoe". Marie passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 1 , 2008 at Extendicare Nursing Home at the age of 79 years.

Marie leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving husband, John, of 53 years; her daughter, Suzanne (Ron) Skwarchuk; grandchildren, Jonathan and Sarah of Saskatoon, SK. She is survived by two sister-in-laws, Lillian Kochan and Tina Kochan of Wakaw, SK; her nieces and nephews; her many friends and special neighbours of Delaronde Crescent. She was predeceased by her daughter, Kathleen Marie; her parents, Michael and Alexandra Kochan; six brothers, Harry (Stephie), George (Jean), Fred, John (Agnes), Michael and Anthony; six sisters, Nettie, Catherine (Nick) Hutnick, Alice, Ellen, Mary, Martha (Peter) Sawchuk, and Anne (Ron) West. Marie was born August 15, 1928 in the Lepine district and attended Bukovina and Wakaw schools.

She had a keen interest in helping people and decided upon nursing as a profession. She graduated from Mt. San in Hamilton, ON and in 1948, began nursing as a Practical Nurse at Canora Union Hospital. It was there she met John, "the love of her life". On September 6, 1953, Marie and John married and raised two daughters. Marie's love of nursing and her determination to advance her education had her returning to school in 1974. She graduated from Kelsey Institute (SIAST), Saskatoon, SK in 1976 as a Registered Nurse and returned to Canora Union Hospital.

Marie and John made the move to Saskatoon to be close to Suzanne upon retirement in 1991. While in Canora, Marie was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star having attained the office of Grand Aida. She was a member of the Ukrainian Women's Association and other volunteer groups. Her medical problems caused her to curtail participation upon retirement. Marie enjoyed gardening and tending to her herb garden. She loved to grow flowers, especially roses and loved watching and studying birds that visited her garden. Needlepoint was one of her early hobbies and as a Centennial project completed an elaborate tapestry of "The Last Supper" which hangs in the dining room to this day. When she wasn't tending to children and the house, she took great pride in cooking and baking; always having cookies in the freezer for company or her grandchildren. There was never a recipe, cookie cutter or decoration she didn't have. Marie and John loved traveling and enjoyed many trips, especially loved their tropical holidays. In her immaculate and orderly manner she compiled photo albums of each event complete with descriptive captions. She had a great sense of humor and always showed it at the right time and place. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

The Prayer Service for Marie was held on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at Park Funeral Chapel, 311 Third Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK. The Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at The Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of Holy Trinity, 919 -- 20th Street West, Saskatoon, SK.
