GABORA: Mary Gabora, widow of the late Sam Gabora of Canora passed away peacefully at the Canora Hospital on April 23rd, 2008 at the age of 85 years.

Mary was born on June 16th, 1922 in Veregin, SK to Mike and Mary (nee Berezowski) Sokolowski. She received her education at Pretty View School in the Veregin District. Mary was orphaned at the young age of 13 following the passing of her second parent and then went to live with her sister Irene and John Kindrat. She worked on the Kindrat farm until July of 1943 when she was united in marriage to Sam Gabora. After a couple years of marriage Mary and Sam purchased their own farm in the Donwell area. In 1962 they moved to a new home south of the Whitesand River Bridge along the #9 Hwy. Mary spent much of her time raising chickens and cattle and selling the eggs and cream. Each year she would grow a large garden with raspberries and strawberries always in great supply.

Mary and Sam continued to farm until 1990 when they retired and moved to Canora. Mary had many interests but cooking was her greatest passion. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends; she never needed a recipe it was just a little of this, a splash of that, and a pinch more for perfection. There was never a shortage of perogies, holopchi or studinetz. Mary loved to play cards with her neighbours and friends men against women; even if it meant cheating to win. She always looked forward to visiting with family, friends and especially her grandchildren.

After Sam's passing in 2004, Mary moved into the Canora Senior Citizens Home. On April 4th, 2008 Mary suffered a stroke and was able to battle her way back to recovery but then was dealt another setback on April 22nd. Mary was unable to recover from her second stroke and passed away the following day. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mary is lovingly remembered by her three sons: Don (Bernadette) of Yorkton, SK, Jerry (Jan) of Canora, SK and Willard (Lona) of Calgary, AB; her sister Elsie Mydynski of Benito, MB; her brother-in-law Fred (Mary) Gabora of Regina, SK; her ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents: Mike and Mary Sokolowski: her husband Sam; her son Mervin and grandson Dean Gabora; her sisters: Irene (Jennie) Kindrat, Wasalyna Kosolowski, Dora Pykarnyk, Lena Zielinski, Annie Macooh and her brother John Sokolowski.
