Canora Courier, January 9, 2008 Page 12 – In memoriam:

RUSNAK: In loving memory of Walter James Rusnak, March 22, 1938 - January 7, 2007.

God took him home, it was His will,

But in our hearts we love him still;

His memory is as dear today,

As in the hour he passed away.

We often sit and think of him,

When we are all alone;

For memory is the only friend,

That grief can call its own.

-Sadly missed by wife Elsie and family.

JOSEPH KOWBEL 1915 - 2007

Joseph Peter Kowbel, a long-time resident of Canora, SK, passed into the loving arms of his Lord and Saviour at the age of 91 on December 17, 2007 at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon following a courageous battle with cancer. He is looking down on us from heaven with his wife, Anne, parents Peter and Barbara Kowbel (nee Baraniecki), and siblings Anne, Slawka, and John.

Joseph was a person of kindness, generosity, determination, patience, and -- above all -- devout faithfulness.

Joseph was born on December 25, 1915, in Esperance, SK, just south of Prud'homme. Although his family settled in Smuts, Joseph spent the majority of his adult life in Canora. After graduating from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Saskatchewan in 1938, he married Anne Krywy in 1942. Together they owned and operated Kowbel's Drug Store on Main Street in Canora until their retirement in 1986. Joseph was looked upon by friends and colleagues as a wise, patient and very pious gentleman -always putting the needs of others ahead of his own. He was often found filling prescriptions late into the night -- a testament of his commitment to the health of the community he cherished. Joseph was a charter member of the Canora Kiwanis Club and longtime member of the Canora School Board. The Kowbels were known for hosting their renowned New Year's open house -- complete with food and drink for anyone who stopped by. During the summers, the Kowbels held Sunday afternoon gatherings at their cabin at Madge Lake. Joseph especially enjoyed fishing with friends.

The Kowbels were active members of Ss. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church. Joseph served on Parish Council for many years and was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada. He was a Charter and Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and regularly led the Rosary before Daily Mass -- a ritual he continued until only months ago when his health no longer permitted it. He was recently recognized for his dedication to the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saskatoon with the receipt of a 50th Anniversary Eparchial Medal.

Nothing was more important to Joseph than family. He was happiest when surrounded by his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Left to cherish the memories and celebrate his life are his children, Mary Anne (Modest Kowal) of Saskatoon, Joanna (Peter Kapusta) of Meadow Lake, Joseph (Janice Hauser) of Saskatoon, and Michael (Deborah Clark) of Kamloops, BC; grandchildren Johanna (Murray Dietrich) of Edmonton, AB, Alicia (Graeme Carey) of Saskatoon, Justin and Katherine Kowal of Saskatoon, Michael Kapusta of Regina, Christina Kapusta of Edmonton, AB, Mathew, Mishaela, Anastasha and Jantina Kowbel of Saskatoon; great grandchildren Niayla Kowbel, Rebecca Dietrich, Noah Kowbel Selk, and Isabella Carey; siblings William (Bill) Kowbel, Helen Bayda, Frances Romanow, Olga (Joe) Sherban, and Mary (Adam) Kotyk; and numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren.

Prayers were offered on Thursday, December 20, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. by Fr. Andrew Muzyka at St. Volodymyr Villa Chapel in Saskatoon; a Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Friday, December 21, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. by Fr. Joachim Rac and Fr. Yurij Lazurko at Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Canora, SK. Interment was at the Canora Cemetery - Catholic Section, Canora, SK. In lieu of flowers, kindly make a donation to Ss. NORDIN: Elsie Nordin of Melville, SK and formerly of Buchanan, SK passed away at St. Paul's Lutheran Home, Melville on December 22nd, 2007 at the age of 85 years.

Elsie was born to Jonas August and Edith Viola (nee Stjarastrom) Jonsson on August 29th, 1922 in Hasjo, province of Jamtland, Sweden. In 1929 at the age of six years, Elsie came to Canada by ship with her parents and brother, Gunnar. The ship's name was the `Kungsholm'. Landing in Halifax, NS and then travelling by train, they arrived in Buchanan. Elsie started her schooling in Buchanan at Vergland School with Annie Soderland (Myrfield) as her first teacher. Elsie only spoke Swedish, so having a Swedish speaking teacher was great blessing to her. She continued her schooling at Flin Flon, MB when her father became employed with the Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Co. At age twelve to sixteen, she contracted TB and was hospitalized at the Winnipeg Sanatorium, with short reprieves at home with her family. She made many friends and has autograph books full of memories and names. In 1942 at age nineteen, Elsie worked for the Woolworth company in Winnipeg, MB as a sales clerk. She saved a T4 slip showing her wages for 1.5 weeks work, it was $19.65.

Elsie met Howard in the fall of 1941 and fell in love. They were married on April 12th, 1944. They spent fifty-four wonderful years together, till God called Howard home. They started their life together in Flin Flon, MB and it was there, their first child David was born in 1947. Elsie & Howard moved to Buchanan to farm. They continued to work and live on the farm until the fall of 1981, when they moved into town. While they lived on the farm, they added four more pride and joys to their life. Linda in 1949, Gerald in 1952, Raymond in 1957 and Edith in 1959. In Buchanan, Elsie was an active member in the Faith Lutheran Church & LCW group. She was also active at the Club 50. She loved to garden, cook, bowl, play cards and go fishing with Howard, but most of all she loved to be with her family and friends. She had a strong, but quiet faith that showed in how she lived her life. Travelling was another activity. Two memorable trips were to Las Vegas and Points South in February of 1988. Then to Sweden a few years later where she was re-acquainted with relatives of her side of the family as well as Howard's side. After Howard's passing in 1998, Elsie continued to live in Buchanan for almost five years. In fall of 2003, she moved to Melville to a private care home and then to St. Paul's Lutheran Home in 2005 where she resided until her passing. Elsie went to be with the Lord peacefully in her own little Swedish decorated room, with her family by her side. Elsie will be remembered for always having a song in her heart and a smile on her face by everyone who knew her. She was known as a great cook, keeping up with her traditional Swedish dishes including the smelly Lutefisk at Christmas time. Her good humour and love for music and happy disposition made her easy to care for.

Elsie is survived by her five children: David of Buchanan, SK, Linda (Don) of Saskatoon, Gerald (Elaine) of Yorkton, SK, Raymond (Reta) of Melville, SK and Edith (Orest) of Endeavor, SK; her twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Howard, her son Ronald at birth, her parents and parentsin-law, three brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law. She will be sadly missed but gratefully and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

The Funeral Service was held on Friday, December 28th, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. from the Faith Lutheran Church, Buchanan, SK with Pastor Carlyle Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the Elim Lutheran Cemetery, Northeast of Buchanan, SK.
