WERNER: On June 24th, at the age of 94 years, Alice Werner passed away in the loving embrace of her family.

She was born to Harry and Sarah (nee Tetlock) Hallewell in Canora, SK on Oct. 4,1913. and after a long productive life leaves to mourn her son Norman (Virginia); daughter Charlotte; granddaughters Karen (Les) McDonald and Colleen (Sheldon) Prekaski; great-granddaughters Megan and Kimberlee McDonald and Taylor and Brandi Nicolson; and her brother A.B. (Jim) Hallewell. She was predeceased by her husband, Oswald, her parents, and her brother Clarence.

She was devoted to her husband and her family was always her highest priority. She will be sadly missed by young and old. The repeated visits by family and dear friends from near and far during her period of declining health show the legacy of caring and support that she gave to others and now receives in turn.

Alice tackled challenges and adventures, and travelled in Canada, USA, and Europe, as well as a trip to Costa Rica and special trips to Edmonton and Regina to see her granddaughters and great-granddaughters. She exchanged letters with relatives in England that she had never met, and then went there to visit them and her dad's birthplace. Alice maintained contact with friends even from high school days. She created food, clothing, and special occasions. She had unique ways in turning difficulties into advantages, and maintained a courageous attitude and a quick sense of humour until the end of her life. She respected others' rights to make their own choices, and had warm smiles for family, friends and hospital staff who recently cared for her.

Alice pursued art, music, and craft activities from childhood to recent times. Her determination to learn and explore started when a young child, including travel by herself by train from Mikado to Yorkton to take piano lessons. She created and sold several hundred paintings, which she exhibited in national juried and local shows. Her paintings are in the Saskatchewan Arts Board Permanent Collection in Regina as well as in the McKenzie Art Collection. She exhibited at the Canora library and in exhibitions of Saskatchewan artists at Yorkton. She received numerous commissions for dedication ceremonies and private collectors, and many family members, with a variety of tastes, proudly display her work. She played a piano at family parties and at home until recent months. She created pottery, cross-stitch, afghans and many photos.

Alice wanted to stay in her own home until she passed away, but it was not possible because of medical needs. In her to-the-heart-of-the-matter view, she said she "knew what she was up against" but "would rather die happy than bored." She seldom felt sorry for herself, and, even in grief found innovative ways to create happiness for herself and for others. She continued to surprise us with witty remarks even in her last days. Alice was a woman of great inner and outer beauty and strength, who expressed her love in imaginative ways and appreciated all big and little offerings to her. She worked very hard but loved to dance; and kept her body and mind active throughout her whole life. She treasured mementos of many occasions, and all gifts and memories were kept and treasured. She inspired three generations with her interests. With the love and care she gave, her flowers still bloom in the garden she planted.

The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, June 28th, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home, Canora with Marion Naduriak of the United Church of Canada officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to a charity of choice as tokens of remembrance.
