Sophia Tataryn of Norquay passed away on Wednesday June 17th, 2009 at the
Norquay Health Centre at the age of 102 years. Sophia
was born in Dowholuka, Stryj, Ukraine on December 31st, 1906 to Stephan and
Kateryna (nee Prokopowich) Kurytnuik. Sophia immigrated to Canada with her
family in 1911 and settled in Saskatchewan the following year. In 1915 the
family established a homestead in the Poelcapelle District. Sophia married
Mike Tataryn at Swan Plain in 1923 and the happy couple then settled down on
Mike's homestead to begin farming and raising a family. Sophia and Mike
retired in 1984 and moved into a senior's complex in Norquay. Mike passed away
on October 19th,1993. Sophia moved into the Norquay Health Centre on April
17th, 2002 and remained a resident there until her passing. Sophia
was a very active and talented lady who took great pride in maintaining her
Ukrainian traditions. Besides being a dedicated homemaker, Sophia was also a
very talented seamstress; she took great pride in her embroidery of Ukrainian
blouses and shirts for her children and grandchildren. To make extra money,
Sophia cooked at 49 weddings and functions in the Swan Plain and Norquay
districts and she was known for having the best "meatballs" in town.
Above all, her greatest specialty was painting Ukrainian Easter Eggs (Pysanky).
She was able to continue this hobby well into her nineties. Sophia will be
especially remembered for her amazing memory (right to the last days of her
life) and her ability to always be one step ahead of everyone else. She will
continue to guide her family from up above. Sophia
was predeceased by her parents, Stephan and Kateryna Kurytnuik, husband Mike,
sisters, Julia Cherewyk and Rosie Kozak, brothers Leon, Joseph and John
Kurytnuik, son-in-laws Ted Keller and Mike Wakshinski, daughter-in-law Mary
Tataryn and grandchildren Roy Keller, Terry Keller, Michael Tataryn and Lauren
Spak. Sophia is survived by her sons: John of Canora, SK and Nick (Mary) of
Swan River, MB; her daughters: Mary (Sam) Keller of Thunder Bay, ON, Olga
Wakshinski of St. Andrews, MB and Leona Osowetski of Nanaimo, BC; her sisters:
Anna Petrychka of Winnipeg, MB and Katheryna Legros of Port Alberni, BC.
Sophia is also lovingly remembered by 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren
and 2 great-great grandchildren. The Prayer Service was held on Sunday, June 21st, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Service was held on Monday, June 22nd, 2009, both from the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home, Canora with Very Reverend Archpriest Mikolaj Derewianka officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Norquay Health Centre or to the Canadian Cancer Society as tokens of remembrance. Mr. John "Little John" Chutskoff, August 31, 1921-June 21,2009. John was born a twin on August 31, 1921 at Runnymede, Saskatchewan. He was raised on a farm, and took up farming until he decided to venture out into the great unknown. He and his twin brother started a hardware store in Humboldt and Quill Lake. Saskatchewan. Years later he went to work for Simpson Sears and held a lot of posts as manager in many cities in Saskatchewan and British Columbia. His last store was Penticton, from where he retired. He later moved to Lethbridge to be closer to family. John is survived by his wife Nellie, of 68 years, as well as two sons and two daughters. He had a very full life. A private family interment service will take place in Saskatchewan at a later date. The family wishes to thank everyone who took great and loving care of John.
