OSTAFIE: Michael "Mike" Ostafie was born on May 14, 1918 on the family farm in the Mikado district to Stanley & Petrunka (nee Makowsky) Ostafie. He attended Zhoda School and then stayed home to assist his widowed mother on the family farm. He continued farming until July 1956 when he and his mother took up residence in Mikado. Mike purchased the Oakley General Store which he operated until 1968. He also assumed the position of Postmaster of the Mikado Post Office which he operated until his retirement in 1983. He was recognized by Canada Post for 27 years of service. Mike moved to Canora where he remained, becoming a resident of Gateway Lodge in January, 2008. Mike had a great love of sports, playing hockey and baseball, and as a spectator. He also enjoyed curling in the winter.

As a member of St. Thomas RC Church in Mikado, Mike served as secretary-treasurer for many years and was also a member of St. Joseph's Church in Canora and a member of the Knights of Columbus. While serving as Postmaster, Mike was cashier for the elevator companies in Mikado, cashing grain cheques and doing payroll. Mike assisted many families with writing and reading letters for those who could not. He assisted many seniors in applying for pensions, birth certificates and other government documents. Mike served in the Canadian Army in 1942-43, returning to the farm to put the crop in. He had a great love of flowers which was evident in Mikado and Canora. He had a green thumb with all house plants. Mike's greatest love was family and friends and he loved hosting family gatherings. He was an excellent cook and baker; nobody left his home without being fed. Mike is the last of the generation of the family of Stanley and Petrunka.

Mike was predeceased by his father Stanley (1918), mother Petrunka (1981), brothers: Walter (1922), Joe (1966) and James (1985); sisters: Emily, 2004 (Peter, 2003) Trach, Olga, 1999 (Joe, 1999) Derkatch and Mary, 2000 (John, 1995) Cerkowniak and nephews and nieces: Edward (Agnes) Trach, Ludvic Ostafie, Isabel (Ostafie) Dillabough, Merv Gnyp and Tom Beck. Mike is survived by sister-in-law Pauline Ostafie, nieces and nephews: Laurie (Mary) Derkatch, Alice (Edward) German, Jean (Allen) Kobylka, Darlene (Ron) Lischynski, Nestor (Liz) Trach, Lenard (Fran) Trach, Mike Cerkowniak, Jean Gnyp, Stan (Linda) Ostafie, Sylvia Beck, Olivia (Tom) Bebyk, and B ill Dillabough.

A Vigil of Prayer was held on Sunday, November 22nd at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, November 23rd, 2009 at 10:00 a.m., both from St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Canora with Rev. Dr. Vitalis Azike officiating. The Rite of Committal followed in the Sliding Hills Christian Cemetery, Mazeppa. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Sliding Hills Cemetery Fund or to the Canora Gateway Lodge Auxiliary, in memory of Michael Ostafie. FIALA: Marleen Isabella Alice (nee Gray) Fiala of Blaine Lake, SK passed away in Shellbrook Hospital on November 20, 2009 after a very brief eight week battle with stomach cancer.

Marleen was born on July 23,1938 in Canora, SK. She was the youngest of seven children. She took her elementary and high school in Invermay, SK. After high school, she worked at various jobs in the Invermay area. In 1957 she met her future husband, Vernal Fiala and then later married him in Invermay on November 6,1959. They lived in Invermay for a short time and relocated to Norquay, SK then to Hyas, SK in 1962. In 1976 the family moved to Blaine Lake, SK and she resided in Blaine Lake until her passing. Together, they had four sons and a daughter. Marleen was the consummate community volunteer and spent endless hours at the community skating rink and the annual Blaine Lake sports day. She was treasurer for the 'TOPS' organization, the chairperson of the Blaine Lake Haven Lodge Tenants Association and was on the Blaine Lake Library Board. She was also a dedicated member of the 'Communities in Bloom' committee and was a loyal supporter of the Blaine Lake Community Association. She involved herself at all levels for fund raising. A member of the community will surely be missed. In 2004 she was nominated and received the lifetime community contribution award. She was an amazing cook and a gracious host. You never left her home hungry. She had a great love for her ten grandchildren and never missed an event they were involved in. Her wealth was her family and wonderful friends. Marleen had a great passion for the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Eskimos.

Left to cherish her memories are her children, Vaughn (Carol Brown), his children Cayle and Cody of Saskatoon, SK; Darryl and his son Benjamin of Saskatoon, SK; Calvin (Arden) and their children Elene and Hartley of Shaunavon, SK; Rhonda (Bryan) Roney and their children, Alexa and Jaimie of Calgary, AB; Wade (Karen) and their children Abby, Emily and Lauren of Blaine Lake, SK. Also surviving are her sister, Margaret Dalshaug of Saskatoon, SK brothers, Fred (Una) Gray of Melfort, SK and Andy (Linda) Gray of Invermay, SK; numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Vernal; her parents; her special dog `Pepper' and her brothers Jack and Richard Gray and sister Nora Enright.

The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Dr. Fourie and all nursing staff of Shellbrook Hospital and especially to her special friends, Florence Banda, Anne Sitter, Sylvia Savage and Hazel Smith. What would she and we have done without you! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Blaine Lake Seniors Building Fund. The Memorial Service was held at the Blaine Lake School Gymnasium on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 1:00 pm conducted by Pastor Gerry Epp. As a tribute to Marleen please wear something 'Red'. Interment of Marleen's cremated remains will take place at the Fiala Family Cemetery, Hyas, SK on Saturday, May 22, 2010. OSTAPUK: Jennie Ostapuk of Canora SK passed away at Canora Gateway Lodge on Thursday, November 19th, 2009 at the age of 88 years. Jennie was born to David and Annie (nee Deduke) Twardoski of the Hyas District, on January 18th,1921. She received her education at Hyas, and then on June 17th,1939. she married John Ostapuk. Jennie was always a homemaker and enjoyed her garden, yard and flowers. She was a quiet, reserved lady, devout in her faith and well liked by all who knew her. Any visitors to her home could not leave without having something to eat. In 1980 they moved to Canora. Once again Jennie enjoyed her garden while she could. She lived at the Park Place Seniors Housing for three years and finally in 2009 became a resident of the Gateway Lodge. She knew her life was coming to an end and was prepared for her death.

Jennie was predeceased by her parents, her husband John, two daughters in infancy, Mary and Evangeline, a daughter, Darlene, and brother, Peter Ward. She is survived by her son Don (Heather) of Hyas, a sister, Polly Konik of Vegreville, AB, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Susan (Graham) Crawford and their son Ryan, Jennifer Ostapak, and Stephen (Tarri) Ostapak with their daughters, Zoe and Abby.

Funeral Service was held at the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home on Thursday, November 26th, with Pastor Greg Bright officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Canora Hospital Auxiliary as tokens of remembrance. Arrangements were entrusted to LESON'S FUNERAL HOME, Canora.
