KOTYK: With great sadness the family announces the passing of Emil Kotyk at the age of 94 years on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at the Regina General Hospital, SK.

He was predeceased by his parents Paul and Fedora. brothers: John, Steve, Harry, and Mike, sisters: Mary Pura, and Kathie Melnychuk, and daughter-in law Janie Kotyk and many nephews and nieces. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 63 years Marion; his son Melvin, daughters: Elizabeth (Gary) Orsulak, Evelyn (Walter) McKay, Zonia (Kurt) Guenther; granddaughters: Jacqueline (Mark), Lori (Chris) and Krystal (Cory); grandsons: Eugene, Mark, Kevin (Crystal), Lewis and Alex; great grandsons: Levi. Bailey, Declan, Dominica step-great-grandsons Cody and Austin; great-granddaughter Macey; his brother Peter Kotyk and sister Olga (Max) Zawislak.

Emil was born in Rama, SK on August 15, 1915, to Paul and Fedora (Pasternak) Kotyk. He attended school in Wolna near Rama. After his schooling he moved to the Amsterdam district where he farmed for many years. He married Marion Zawislak in 1946. Later they moved to the Mikado area and continued their farming life while they raised their family. Emil and Marion moved to Canora to retire and Emil enjoyed spending time with local friends talking about politics and drinking coffee. In the last year he moved to Regina to be closer to family. Emil was very interested in the community, was a school trustee, and one of the chartered members of the Canora Credit Union. He was a very supportive member of the New Democratic Party and took great pride in what the CCF and New Democratic Party did for the province. He loved curling, reading, Ukrainian music, current affairs, and had a passion for politics. With his wife, he took a chartered trip to Ukraine, which he truly enjoyed. He spoke and wrote the Ukrainian language fluently. He was a very compassionate man and always felt sorry for the poor people and the less fortunate.

The Kotyk family would like to thank the Regina Lutheran Nursing Home, Parkside Nursing Home, Regina General Hospital and Pasqua Hospital doctors and staff for the tender loving care of Emil.

The Prayer Service was held on Monday, September 7, 2009 at the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home. The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity in Canora, with Very Reverend Archpriest Mikolaj Derewianka and Rev. Fr. Brent Kuzek officiating. Interment followed at the Canora Cemetery. If friends so desire donations may be made to a Hospital or to a charity of choice. Arrangements were entrusted to LESON'S FUNERAL HOME, Canora (563­5671).

CHALUS: Annie Chalus of the Canora Gateway Lodge passed away peacefully on her birthday, September 10th, 2009 at the age of 72 years.

Annie was born in 1937 on a farm near Sunnyside Beach in the Burgis District, SK to Harry and Sophie (Kostyshen) Chalus. Annie was educated at Wysla School until grade nine. In 1946, her family took LIP residence on their second homestead near the Tiny Grid Road. Annie and her brother David hopped a train in that same year to Brantford, ON where they both spent one year in school at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind where Annie learned to read Braille. They returned to the homestead and resided there until 1985 when Annie and her mother Sophie moved into Canora, SK. Annie loved to travel by train and did a lot visiting with family and friends through- out parts of Canada. Struggling with a disability never hindered Annie from getting to where she wanted to go! A gifted crafts person, she knitted and created floral designs for family affairs and was known for her cooking throughout the area. Annie had a wry sense of humour and was known for her ability to tell you what she thought. Annie was a devoted Christian woman and will be greatly missed by her family and friends alike.

Annie is survived by her brother Ernie (Lynn) Chalus of Beausejour, MB; her niece Shawna (John) Gareau and their children: Maureen Kospecky, Kendra Kospecky and Ryanne Gareau; her nephew Darren (Patti) Chalus and their children: Danielle and Braeden Chalus. She was predeceased by her parents: Harry and Sophie; her brothers David and James Chalus.

The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 from the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home, Canora with Pastor Mavis Watson, Parkland Christian Centre, officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the CNIB as tokens of remembrance. Arrangements were entrusted to LESON'S FUNERAL HOME, Canora. (563­5671).
