With great sadness we announce the passing of Mary Michaluk on January 12,
2010 at the age of 90 years. Mary
was born on the family farm
near Danbury, on July 20, 1919. She was the third child of Sam and Anna
Kosteniuk. The family consisted of 8 children, one passed away in infancy. The
children attended Brush Valley School where Mary achieved grade 10 with
honours. At an early age she learned to do a lot of work helping her mother to
prepare meals, learned to milk cows, feed farm animals, and plant a garden.
After grade 10, she stayed home to help look after younger sisters and
brothers as well as household and farm chores. Mary learned sewing,
cross-stitching, knitting. She joined a young people's group in 1936 - 37
where she took part in drama, singing and Ukrainian dancing, as well as
Ukrainian oratory where she won a trophy at a national competition in
Winnipeg. She taught herself to read and write in Ukrainian after her father
encouraged her, enabling her to keep contact with family in Ukraine and did so
up to the present time. In
1937 -38 Mary met George Michaluk. They were married on November 14, 1940 in
the Ukrainian Orthodox Church north of Stenen. For the first three years they
lived on the farm with George's parents, Wasyl and Lena Michaluk. In 1944
George and Mary, with their first child, moved to their own place to farm
where their family grew with the addition of 4 more children. The work
continued, life was busy but happy, with time to go on trips to Winnipeg,
British Columbia, Ontario and Florida, to visit family and friends. In 1977
Mary and George moved to 126 Hudson Street in Sturgis where they were
semi-retired, but still kept the farm with a lot of animals as well as a large
garden. Mary took an active part in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church organization
helping with suppers, crafts, and bake sales, as well as singing in the choir,
taking part in some of the committees and cleaning the church. During the
winters Mary kept busy with sewing, cross- stitching, knitting, crocheting.
Mary loved baking bread buns, scuffles, cinnamon buns, and making perohi which
the children and grandchildren enjoyed very much. Mary was predeceased by her
husband George in 2004; her parents Sam & Anna Kosteniuk; brothers Harry
& Willie; sisters Katherine in infancy, Nellie Cybak & Pauline

Audrey Yaholnitsky passed away peacefully at the Canora Gateway Lodge on
January 17th, 2010 at the age of 78 years. Audrey
was born March 16th, 1931 to Hnat and Paraska (nee Piantak) Drushka. She was
the youngest of 7 children on the family farm in the Mazeppa district. She had
one brother, Metro & Betty Drushka, five sisters: Anna & Mike
Cherwick, Lena & Paul Remenda, Katherine & Peter Korney, Mary &
Isadore Sniatynski, Nellie & Adam Kowalyshen. She was well looked after
being the youngest, but her life was in no way that much easier than most of
her generation. Audrey attended Mazeppa School and finished her high school
education in Rhein, staying with Metro and Betty. She was a self taught guitar
player with a guitar her older brother had bought her. Her nephew Roman said
it was Audrey who taught him his first cords on the guitar. She had a
beautiful voice and began singing in the church choir and did so for her
entire life. After high school, Audrey worked for a period at the Yorkton
Airport in the Hospital when it was a military training facility. On
Nov 5th, 1950 Audrey married John Yaholnitsky and they lived on the family
farm in the Mazeppa area until 2004. Audrey was an active member of the
Mazeppa ladies Organization for her entire life; she was a 4H leader and was a
very strong member of the local TOPs chapter. Everyone who knew Audrey will
remember her smile and happiness, but the best were her culinary skills. No
matter when or how you came there was always a meal on the table within a
short period and there was never a fear of leaving hungry. In her new home
Audrey entertained in royal fashion - the best china, the best silver, and the
table and presentation was always the best she had. There were grand bridge
parties, where all the men wore suits and the ladies dressed in dresses. There
were great dinners and barbeques when friends and relatives from all overcame
and Audrey's meals were famous throughout. Besides their home and their yard,
Audrey and John enjoyed traveling, first with a truck mounted camper pulling a
boat, then another truck mounted camper and finally a motor home. They enjoyed
visiting relatives and friends throughout Canada and they especially enjoyed
fishing trips to various lakes throughout Sask. Audrey
and John loved their grandchildren here and made special time for them. Audrey
and John made 2 trips to Africa to visit Ivan and his family so that his
children would know their grandparents and both Ditiboho and Audrianna have
some very special memories of their times at the farm here and in Africa with
Baba and Dido. On March 16, 2009 Audrey became a great-grandmother to Shayna
Audrey sharing the same birthday. Audrey always tried to look after herself
and it was a daily ritual for many years to see her out walking. After John
passed away suddenly in July of 2004, Audrey decided to move to Canora and was
hoping to continue with her zest for life doing volunteer work. Audrey spent a
year at Cummings Place, a year at Park Place, then a year at Eaglestone Lodge
in Kamsack and finally had been a resident of the Canora Gateway Lodge since
May 1, 2008 to her passing on Sunday, January 17. Audrey loved a laugh and her
ear to ear smile was one of the things most will remember her by. She was
always accommodating and polite, with no demands of anyone. Right to the end,
she loved a good joke and still appreciated the taste of foods that were
special and she could enjoy. She had this wonderful smile that would just
appear. Thanks for all the great memories and everyone knows, things change,
people change, places change and it is never the same - but memories are there
forever. Vitchna Pamyat! Audrey
is lovingly remembered by her sons Michael (Carol) of Canora and Ivan
(Nthabiseng) of Bethel, Lesotho, Africa, her daughter Marilyn of Yorkton, her
sister Mary Sniatynski of Canora, her four grandchildren: Ian (Tracy Andrews),
Devan (Carissa), Audryana and John and her great-granddaughter Shayna. She was
predeceased by her parents Hnat and Paraska, her husband John, her brother Metro
Drushka, her sisters Anna Cherwick, Lena Remenda, Nellie Kowalyshen and
Katherine Korney. The Prayer Service was held on Thursday, January 21st. The Funeral Service was held on Friday, January 22nd both from the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home, Canora with Rev. Fr. Patrick Powalinsky officiating. Interment followed in the Sliding Hills Christian Cemetery, Mazeppa. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Saskatchewan Parkinson's Disease Foundation as tokens of remembrance. Arrangements were entrusted to LESON'S FUNERAL HOME, Canora. (563-5671). Canora Courier, January 27, 2010 Page 24 BEREHULA:
