Train-car collision kill two Mikado men

Ben (Joe) Kerdil, 70 and Michael Frank Marchinkow, 84, both of Mikado, were killed in a car-train collision at a Canadian National Railways crossing approximately one-half mile west of Mikado Thursday at about 2:30 p.m.

The Kamsack-bound CNR freight train struck the front portion of the 1972 model south-bound car Mr. Kerdil was driving. The vehicle was destroyed.

Dr. P.J. Kuling, coroner, did not order an inquest.

Funeral service for Mr. Kerdil was held Monday in the Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church at Canora with Mgsr. Jerome Lashkewich of Canora officiating.

Funeral service for Mr. Marchinkow was held in the St. Thomas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Mikado with Rev. Thomas Novak officiating.

Gibney's Funeral Home was in charge of handling the funeral arrangements.

Born in Western Ukrainian, Mr. Kerdil came to Mikado district with his mother and sister in 1912. He attended Zhoda School. He farmed in the district and in 1932 married Lena Michalkow at Canora. In 1940 he began working at the airport at Yorkton and later at Souris, Man. He served with the Manitoba Dragoons until 1945 when he returned to Mikado district to farm.

He farmed in the area until 1949 when he joined the staff of Manitoba Hydro. In 1958 he accepted the position of stationary engineer with the University of Winnipeg. He and his wife retired and moved to Mikado in 1972.

Besides his wife, Mr. Kerdil is survived by three sons, Patrick of Kingston, Ronald of Toledo, Ohio, and Kenneth of Edmonton; three daughters, Mrs. Hope Hofer of Calgary, Mrs. Jean Weir of Winnipeg and Mrs. Elizabeth Walker of Ft. Coquitlam, B.C.; a half-brother, Victor Rodak of Rochester, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Olga Greba of Vancouver, and 11 grandchildren. 

Born in Poland, Mr. Marchinkow came to Canada in 1908 to join his father at Mikado. He and his father farmed the area. In 1914 Mr. Marchinkow married Rosalie Furman at Mikado. They retired and moved to Mikado in 1959. 

He was predeceased by a son, Walter, in 1972. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Victor of Mikado, John of Calgary and Alvin of Winnipeg; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Yarechewski of Mikado,

Mrs. Anne Mack of Alonso, Man., Mrs. Adeline Yarechewski of Yorkton and Mrs. Emily Monleo of Timmins, Ont.; a sister, Anne Yagelnesky of Stenen; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
