Frank Harry Weir

Death of F.H. Weir. The death of Frank H. Weir, 299 High Street occurred in Saint John Hospital Wednesday, March 22 in his 90th year. He was born in Moncton, April 20, 1877, the son of the late Robert and Margaret (Flanagan), Weir. He attended school in Moncton before there were Free Schools here. He learned the machinist's trade in the shop of his grandfather, the late Jonathan Weir in Moncton. When he qualified as a journeyman he joined the old Intercolonial Railway and worked there for several years during that time he was loaned to the New Brunswick Wire Fence Company where he designed and built a machine to produce a type of wire then in demand and was sent to South America for six months to supervise the installation of this machine and to train people to operate and maintain it. He later returned to the railway but soon after he became associated with the Moncton Street Railway, operating on St. George, Botsford Main and Weldon streets. The cars crossed at Botsford and Main in those days. Fifty-four years ago he became an employee of the City of Moncton. He engaged and maintained the first motorized fire engine, (Watrous machine) in 1913, which he drove from No. 2 Fire Station on St. George Street. About 30 years ago he was transferred to the city water department and was employed at the Highfield Street pumping station until he retired in 1947. He was a charter member of Lodge No. 594, International Association of Machinists and for about ten years was president of the Civic Employees Union Local No. 51. He was a member of Westmorland Lodge No.3, Knights of Pythias for 69 years; Tidal Bore Temple No. 259. DOKK; Tidal Wave Temple No. 16, Pythian Sisters Keith Lodge of the Masonic Order and he was a life member of the Independent Order of Foresters. He served for more than 40 years as a member of the board of directors of Knights of Pythias Limited. He was a member of St. John's United Church. He was twice married. His first wife was the former Jennie Lockhart and in 1905 he married Katherine Scott, who survives him. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Wilson Fearn, (Marjorie), and Mrs. Walter Fearn, (Frances), both of Ormstown, Quebec and one son, George F. Weir Moncton; one sister, Mrs. George Coombs, (Margaret), of Rutland, Mass., six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. The body is resting in Tuttle Brothers' slumber room. The funeral service will be held in Tuttle Brothers' memorial chapel, Saturday, March 25 at 2 p.m. The body will be placed in Elmwood cemetery vault until later in the spring when interment will be in the family lot in the cemetery.
