FLEMING, Ronald Joseph, VA, V25157, RCNVR, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Walter T. Fleming, and of Stella Fleming, of Norton, New Brunswick.

 

Victualling Assistant Fleming died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.

 

Ronald Fleming lived in Norton, NB his entire life until enlisting. Ronald joined the 9th Hussars and served with them from 20 Jun 1938 until 03 Nov 1939 before transferring to the RCNVR on 06 Nov 1939. Ronald served at HMCS Stadacona from 06 Nov 1939 until 17 Jan 1940 before being drafted to HMCS Fraser. He survived the sinking of HMCS Fraser on 25 Jun 1940. On 06 Sep 1940, he was drafted to HMCS Margaree, along with many other survivors of the sinking of HMCS Fraser. On 22 Oct 1940, OS Fleming lost his life when HMCS Margaree was sunk in a collision with a merchant ship. He was survived by his parents and 8 siblings, his sister Margaret being the youngest at age 14 when her brother Ronald died.
