GOLDSMITH, William Edward, AB, 3180, RCN, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of Thomas Charles and Lillian C. Goldsmith, of White Rock, British Columbia.
Able Seaman Goldsmith died when his ship, HMCS MARGAREE, was struck by the freighter SS Port Fairy while in convoy and was sunk. 143 of her crew were lost, 86 of them were survivors of HMCS FRASER.
Able Seaman William Edward Goldsmith, was seriously injured when HMCS Fraser was sunk on June 25, 1940 and was in the hospital for three months. He was taken aboard HMCS Margaree after he was released from hospital. He is now missing and feared dead in the loss of HMCS Margaree. Able Seaman Goldsmith is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Charles and Lillian C. Goldsmith, 1855 Buena Vista Road, of White Rock, British Columbia. He attended John Oliver High School in Vancouver until June 1938, when he entered the Navy at Esquimalt. The Fraser was his first ship he qualified as a gunner. A brother is serving aboard HMCS Ottawa. His father, Major Thomas C. Goldsmith, is a retired R.C.M.P. inspector. He was a member of the Sea Scouts and was born in Regina 1919.
