In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HALBGEWACHS, David Karl - Age 90, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 12, 2026, with his wife, Ethel, by his side in Mayflower Meadows, Windsor. Born April 22, 1935, in Gosfield, North Essex, Ontario, he was the son of the late Gottlob and Emma (Shrij) Halbgewachs.
David was a devoted follower of Christ and a member of Rock Church Halifax. His faith extended beyond the church walls as he enjoyed sharing the Gospel with anyone he met and participated in many mission trips around the world.
He served more than 20 years in the Royal Canadian Navy and later worked for the Department of National Defence and Eastern Canadian Structures.
David enjoyed beekeeping, woodworking, riding his Honda Goldwing motorcycle, and was known as a talented and dependable "Mr. Fix-It."
He is survived by his beloved wife, Ethel Mae (Dill-Starratt); his children, Gary (Phyllis), Susan Brawn (David), Greg, and Heather and the mother of his children, Nancy. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Krista (Jerret), Katelyn (Tim), Derrick (Abby), Tyler (Rachel), and Sara, as well as many great-grandchildren.
David is further remembered by the children of his late wife, Margaret (Land); Donna (John) Hoskin and Lori (Steve) Auton, along with Ethel's children; Sandra Starratt (Bruce), Freddie Starratt (Wanda) and Frankie Starratt (Cindy) as well as many step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Barbara Osborne.
Besides his parents, David was predeceased by his siblings, John, Robert, Mary, Hanna, Elsie, Freda and Dorothy.
David's life was marked by faith, service, and a willingness to help others. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and devotion that will be cherished by all who knew him. His family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff of Mayflower Meadows for their compassionate care during David’s three years there.
Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). The family will be holding a celebration at Rock Church Halifax, 222 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville, NS, B4C 2R4 on Monday, March 23, 2026 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rock Church Missions Fund or charity of the donor’s choice.
