Joan Margaret Moore (née Harrison)

Wren Radar Plotter, RCN

Died: 29 Mar 2026, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada

MOORE, Joan Margaret (née HARRISON) - Peacefully on March 29, 2026, Joan Moore (née Harrison) , age 87, passed away surrounded by her family.

Joan was born in Shaunavon, SK. She spent the majority of her childhood on the family wheat farm and in Eastend, SK and had many fond memories of her days on the prairies. Joan attended Balfour Technical School in Regina, SK in 1957. Later, with the encouragement of her father, Joan joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 19 years old. She became a "Wren", learning the trade of radar plotting, and was posted to Halifax, N.S. where she met her soon to be husband, Maurice (also known as Danny) Moore, who was a sailor in the British Navy. They were married in 1958 and welcomed 3 sons, Carlton, Garnet and Shaun. While pregnant with son #3, the family travelled via ocean liner, the Empress of Britain, to England where they lived for the next 5 years. Joan liked to joke that the sea sickness she experienced on this trip deterred her from ever taking a cruise later in her life. The family returned to Eastend, SK in 1965 for a brief period before settling in Dartmouth, N.S. in 1966, in the same house Joan lived in until December 2025.

Joan took great pride in maintaining a clean home, a garden of beautiful flowers, and a good book to read. Joan loved hummingbirds and would be delighted any time one would visit her kitchen window. Hummingbirds are known as symbols of joy, resilience and the "sweetness of life", values that Joan held true by cherishing and documenting her own special moments and experiences. Joan was known for her baking and no one made a better cinnamon bun or loaf of bread. Her annual marmalade making was greatly appreciated by family and friends. Joan loved curling and figure skating which she would watch avidly on TV. When asked if Joan ever had her own curling equipment, she would laugh and say her curling broom had been the same corn broom they would use to sweep the kitchen floor. Joan was exceptionally close with her sister, Judy, and though they lived on opposite sides of the country, they loved to visit one another when possible. Joan and Judy had a special birthday card that they sent back and forth to one another for several years so the special messages would never be lost. Joan was known for her kindness and loyalty, and if you were lucky enough to become her friend, you would have a friend for life.

Joan is predeceased by her husband, Maurice, in 2015; son, Garnet (Kelly), in 2003; and by her daughter-in-law, Janice (Carlton) in 2013. She leaves to mourn her sister, Judy (Allen; deceased 2016); sons, Carlton (Carole) and Shaun (Laura); daughter-in-law, Kelly (Dave); grandchildren, Alex, Danielle, Madison (Thomas) and Emily; great grandchildren, Haley and Riley; as well as nephew, Ward (Jodie), and nieces Erin (Mark) and Kathi (Pete).

Cremation has taken place and funeral services will be arranged by the family at a later date. Donations in memory of Joan may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. (Arbor Memorial)
