NEWTON, William Harold - Peacefully in hospital, Almonte, Ontario, on Monday, September 11, 2000, at age 95. William Harold Newton, beloved husband of the late Anne Veronica Brown. Dear father of Margaret (Peggy) (Mrs. Anthony Markarian), San Diego, James (Verna), Richmond, Nora (Mrs. John Rooney), Almonte, Marilyn (Mrs. William Foster), San Diego, Martha (Mrs.. William Donaldson), Winchester, Robert (Sharon), Almonte, Patrick (Lorna), Arnprior and Michael (Karen, Pakenham. Also survived by daughter-in-law Joan and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Predeceased by one son, Donald, one brother Arnold and four sisters, Frances, Margaret, Dorothy and Morleen. Friends may call at the Kerry Funeral Home, 154 Elgin Street, Almonte for visiting on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thence to Hold Name of Mary Church, Almonte for Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. Interment St. Mary's Parish Cemetery, Almonte. NEWTON, William Harold, Stoker Petty Officer, A4114, British Empire Medal (BEM), RCNR, HMCS ASSINIBOINE - Awarded as per Canada Gazette of 5 January 1946 and London Gazette of 1 January 1946.
"For conspicuous devotion to duty and complete disregard for his personal safety in fighting and successfully overcoming fire in the boiler room of HMCS Assiniboine while on passage from Quebec to St. John's, Newfoundland in July 1945."
