WILCOX, Donald Herbert - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a loving father, a devoted husband, and a pillar of the community. Donald Herbert Wilcox passed peacefully on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at General & Marine Hospital, Collingwood at the age of 84.
Donald now returns to the loving arms of his departed wife, Dianne, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage. He was the proud father of Lorri-Ann Drury (Kevin), and Jason Edgar Moser-Wilcox (Jennifer). The Grandfather of his three precious grandchildren Dylan, Noah, and Abigail.
Donald was the fourth child of Garnet and Alice Wilcox (nee Collins). He was born in what is now Pine Grove, Ontario, on September 5, 1940. Dear brother of Shirley, Douglas (deceased), and Stewart.
A journalist by trade, Donald spent many years as a reporter and Editor for the Orillia Packet & Times, the Barrie Examiner, and Collingwood’s Enterprise-Bulletin. His time in newspapers allowed him to meet and report on many fascinating people, including being received by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh on board H.M. Yacht “Brittania” during the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.
Donald joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1958, and served five years, with much of that time spent on the HMCS Bonaventure. His service in the Navy led to his involvement with the Royal Canadian Legion, where he was an active volunteer and executive until his passing.
Don’s volunteerism extended to many forays, including the Collingwood/Katano, Japan Sister City Committee, Canadian Red Cross, The Collingwood Elvis Festival, and the Collingwood Horse Show. In 1991 he was awarded the Order of Collingwood.
A devout Christian, Donald was a member of the Heritage Community Church, where he enjoyed socializing with his friends and playing a game of checkers.
Donald was kind and generous of his time, always willing to help in any way he can. A great lover of music, his favourite Artists include Jackie Wilson and The Glenn Miller Orchestra.
A celebration of Donald’s life will be held at the Collingwood Legion (Branch 63), 490 Ontario Street, Collingwood on Friday August 1, 2025 from 1 o’clock to 4 o’clock with words of remembrance at 2 o’clock. Arrangements entrusted to the Chatterson Funeral Home, Collingwood.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Heritage Community Church, I.O.O.F. Lodge, or charity of your choice. (The Barrie Today 15 Jul 2025)
