Anderson Roberts - Yeoman of Signals
George Anderson Roberts was born at Dunoon, Arglshire, Scotland on September
26, 1918. He joined the 23rd Med Battery, R.C.A. in Toronto in June 1940
and transferred to the RCNVR, January 8, 1941 at HMCS York, Toronto. He
was sent to HMCS Naden in Esquimalt, for basic training and a course in
visual signals. Upon graduation George (Bunny) took part in the commissioning
of HMCS Mahone as an ordinary signalman, the ship leaving for the east
coast via Panama canal and spent the winter off Chebucto Head. As a Signalman
TO. he was sent to St. Hyacinthe for further training and returned to
St. John's, as an Acting Leading Signalman. He was drafted to HMCS Vegreville
in December 1942, taking part in minesweeping operations outside Halifax
and St. John's harbour. Redrafted to St. Hyacinthe in early 1944, he met
Edna Coty, a coder. Upon completion of the course he was sent to St. John's,
where Wren Coty was stationed. He then joined HMCS Nene in St. John's
as the Yeoman of Signals and remained with the ship until the war's end.
Bunny returned to Canada and while waiting for his discharge, took a short
leave to St Hyacinthe where, in the RCN Chapel, he married WREN Edna Coty,
August 1, 1945. After his discharge George took a station agent's course
at the Rhab. School in Toronto and was hired by the C.N.R. June 1946 and
remained there until his retirement in June 1977.
